Why read? If you ask a hundred scholars to answer this question, ninety out of a hundred scholars may answer the same: in order to acquire knowledge, to acquire skills, to understand the world, my understanding may be a little different.

There are many people in life who don't actually read, such as my mother, who can't read, so she can't read, but my mother is a person I admire very much.

She doesn't read, but that doesn't mean she has no judgment about society, about the world. She had a lot of important judgments and had a very important impact on me. In my opinion, she is particularly intelligent and has a very broad life experience, and she can be my teacher in any aspect.

So I think that many people do not read books are not a big problem, but why do we have to read, I think the most important point is that it can help us get rid of the "slavery" of knowledge.

If you never read, then you have to listen to what others tell you to eat, what to tell you, tell you what is scientifically based and what is correct, and you will be passively wrapped in a lot of information, and you will not be able to have your own understanding.

If your answer to something happens to be different from someone else's answer, then you have to read a book, and you have to look for people who agree with you in the book, looking for empathy. So I think a very important function of reading is to build an identity relationship and then allow us to develop ourselves better in a very deep understanding of each other.

The "pre-comprehension" of reading is crucial. A lot of good reading habits need to be established by yourself. Being a good reader requires some important prerequisites, one of the most important of which is that you have a dictionary at hand. You have to learn to look up the literature yourself.

You can't say how to believe, it's worse than not reading. Mencius said that "it is better to believe in books than to have no books", and those who blindly "believe in books" are not as good as those who have not read books.

If you believe in the contents of the book, you might as well not read, and not reading can at least maintain your nature, because you have a lot of experience in life and life. Today, we want to push reading to a deeper and better realm, and the cultivation of reading methods is very important.

Today I will talk about one of the simplest problems, which is reading and historical situations. To take a very simple example, Du Fu's poem "Jiangnan Feng Li Gui Year", four sentences: "It is common in the qi king's house, and Cui Jiutang has heard it several times before." It is the good scenery of Jiangnan, and the flower fall season is also the king. ”

These four sentences are understood by children, and the meaning is very simple. But even if you read the poem a hundred times, you may not understand the idea of the poem. To understand it you have to know the specific historical context of the poem, that is, you have to have a "pre-understanding", you have to consult the relevant literature.

Nowadays, many people do not pay attention to the reading of the "original text". Many college students now write papers that do not go to first-hand information. I remember once a student defending a thesis, his topic was about avant-garde literature, and he gave many examples in the defense, but when I heard those examples, they were completely unfounded, and his material did not know where it came from.

Afterwards, I asked him where the material came from, and he said that I was looking at it from the Internet! Now many young students are like this, he does not read first-hand materials, he goes to read second-hand materials, third-hand materials, full of errors, casual credulity.

History is a bride who dresses up, and anyone can dress him up. For example, many students like Hu Lancheng and Zhang Ailing, but in fact, it doesn't matter. But what this caused was that one year when I was in Shanghai, more than half of the students chose to do thesis research direction is Zhang Ailing, which is related to the description of literary history in the whole society, and we easily believe these descriptions.

Zhang Ailing is of course a very good writer, but is it that the entire literary history is only Left with Zhang Ailing and Shen Congwen? Of course not! If you are a responsible scholar, you should have a broader historical and cultural vision.

So I say, whether it's literary research or popular reading, there are a lot of fallacies in the middle, some people are irresponsible, spread some gossipy news, do some very irresponsible writing, and then you take these gossip as historical truths to understand, isn't this a matter of asking for fish?

When reading, you can't blindly give yourself to the author, but you must determine your subject status. It is necessary to have one's own judgments, and reading books helps to establish oneself, not to be lost. A lot of reading now is making us lose ourselves. Good methods are too important to cultivate.

In our time, there were many books that you couldn't read, for example, I wanted to read Mr. Chen Yinke's "Liu Ru Is a Biography" I couldn't read at all, you went to beg others to lend you, people didn't borrow, publishing and information were not as developed as they are today.

But in fact, this also has advantages, because in this way, we could only read some very ordinary books in the past, such as the original texts such as the "Records of History" and "Analects", so it was easy for our generation to study more specially and deeply in some aspects.

Today's reading "Bo" aspect, on the contrary, will become a problem, so I put forward to the students of Tsinghua University, we can't control how many books you read, but the books you read must have the original classics, and there must be some "dry goods" in your stomach, otherwise your "self" will be taken away by others.

In fact, this is not a high requirement, I hope that young people have their own judgment in some areas, to "be more true". You only have to work hard to read a few books, and you will become an expert in a certain aspect; if you carefully read ten Western classics, it will be different as soon as you open your mouth. Now many people go to graduate school and don't read the original texts, which is a very big problem today, and it is also a problem that I am very worried about.
