Chen Sihe in conversation with Chen Shangjun: Critical thinking and classical dialogue

"In our day and age, there are too many unimportant books, too many unimportant studies, too many paradoxical studies, and too many harmful studies. In this case, we have to go back in time and read some classics that have stood the test of time. On the afternoon of February 20, in the first "Master Face-to-Face" activity in the Year of the Tiger, Professor Chen Sihe of Fudan University said.

At the event, Chen Shangjun and Chen Sihe, two senior professors of liberal arts at Fudan University, shared their reading experience and academic experience under the theme of "Talking about the Past and Discussing the Present".

"The benefits of self-study are wild, it's full of intense possessiveness."

Chen Shangjun first started from his own experience. This year is his 45th year at Fudan University, but he feels that the best job he has ever done is the farm work he did during his youth, because it has cultivated his ordinary and simple attitude towards life in the Style of Chinese farmers. In addition to the high intensity of manual labor, he relied on his passion and desire for reading to read almost all the books and publications that he could access, which also laid a solid foundation for his future academic research.

"In the hardest labor in the countryside, a person's potential is infinite. In the past, I always felt that I couldn't see many books, but when I had the opportunity to enter Fudan University, I could find any book in Fudan Library, which was a great pleasure. ”

After entering Fudan University, Chen Shangjun met many teachers who impressed him. The first was Mr. Chen Yunji, who was Chen Shangjun's class representative at that time. "Every Wednesday night he came to tutor his classmates, so I had the opportunity to talk to him. I think he's very knowledgeable and has a lot of fun talking about it, but I have to have the right topic to ask him, and it's a test for me. The second is Mr. Zhu Dongrun, who came from traditional education and stayed in the West, Chen Shangjun believes that following him to expand his horizons, access to ancient and modern, the integration of China and the West, and the people's hearts; the third is Mr. Wang Yunxi, who can explain the incomprehensible entry path of ancient literature and history research. Chen Shangjun said: "I had some self-study experience before I arrived in Fudan, and the advantage of self-study is that I have the passion to drill everywhere, but I lack systematicness and understanding of the doorway. After arriving at Fudan, I received good guidance from several teachers. ”

In this way, he stumbled all the way from the initial stage of scholarship, constantly broadened the breadth and depth of his academic research, and invested in Tang Dynasty literature with the goal of "making the ancient and modern unspoken", especially to the field of Tang poetry research. "I have always maintained a basic pursuit, that is, I hope to be able to 'make new discoveries on details or major issues'. Very careful, do not dare to tell lies, do not dare to say stupid things, do not dare to tell clichés. Whenever an article is published, it always hopes to have something new, to be able to speak differently from others, to speak with emotion and taste. ”

Chen Sihe's first job was at the luwan district library in Shanghai at the time, and he often participated in the library's book reviews and lectures as an opportunity to study. After entering Fudan, he has been studying with Mr. Jia Zhifang, from studying modern literature to studying comparative literature, "It can be said that my entire personality was shaped through Fudan University and through Mr. Jia Zhifang's life. Chen Sihe sighed.

In 2001, in order to realize the Chinese students Bogu tong, Chen Sihe proposed to open a batch of original intensive reading classes for new students. "Put the best teachers in our Chinese department into the first grade, talk about their expertise, and let the students get an attraction to understand how the best teachers teach and what the best learning is." Chen Sihe hoped that the students of the Chinese Department would strive to be able to read more than a dozen original texts intensively in the first and second grades, "I did not ask the teacher to talk about too many academic theories at that time, that is, you helped your classmates finish a book." He believes that after students read the classics deeply, they will have a foundation for learning abstract literary theory, and it is easy to string together knowledge to get improved.

"Students in the Chinese department should read more foreign languages, and they must not only read Chinese because they are Chinese departments." Chen Sihe also said that no matter how the external conditions change, real readers must have the ability and courage to choose their favorite books to read, even if they do not read the classics, they can also experience the joy of reading. However, for school students, it is still necessary to avoid fragmented, fast-food reading as their only way of reading, and still have the ability and energy to immerse themselves in the classics, with systematic critical thinking and classic dialogue. If you encounter good works, you should read them repeatedly, because good books can be read for a lifetime.
