Redefine "Haipai Literature"! Chen Si and Chen Zishan presided over the launch of the Haipai Literature Department

As a very large city with early opening of the port and the characteristics of marine culture, Shanghai has become the most famous cultural port in the modern era of the mainland under the historical conditions of the west wind and the eastward wind. The urban culture, which is mainly characterized by the Haina Hundred Rivers, also participated in and influenced the creation of modern Chinese literature, and Shanghai became an important town of modern Chinese literature.

The distinctive "Shanghai School of Literature" is a modern urban aesthetic construction with Shanghai as the object of writing, and it is also the decoder of the word "modern" in modern Chinese literature. The Shanghai academic community believes that compiling a set of "Haipai Literature Series" that reflects the characteristics of Haipai literature and systematically brings together various works and related materials is not only indispensable for promoting the study of Haipai literature in a more in-depth and down-to-earth manner, but also of great significance to the study of modern Chinese literature as a whole.

A few days ago, the "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)" was officially launched. It is one of the special planning projects for national key book publishing during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, presided over by Chen Sihe, director of Fudan University Library and senior professor of liberal arts, Chen Zishan, professor of East China Normal University, and hired Zhang Wei, a research librarian of Shanghai Library, and Gao Yuanbao, Duan Huaiqing and Luan Meijian of the Department of Chinese of Fudan University to form an editorial committee. The scale of the book is expected to be 50 volumes, about 25 million words, is a basic project to fill the gap in the study of Haipai literature and even the entire modern Chinese literature, and will be published by Fudan University Press. This is the first large-scale series of books on "Haipai literature", which contains both historical documents and works, as well as the research results of Haipai literature in contemporary academic circles.

On January 25th, the project release ceremony and expert seminar of the "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)" was held at Fudan University Press, and the participating experts held a full discussion on the specific matters such as the scope of the project, the content of the sub-volume, and the style of compilation.

The concept of "Haipai literature" has undergone a very complex evolution.

In Chen Sihe's impression, since Lu Xun had a cool comment on the "Beijing School" and "Hai School" in the 1930s, the term "Hai School" basically contained a pejorative meaning; by the early 1980s, the term "Shanghai School literature" was still rarely mentioned, and the academic circles mostly referred to specific terms such as "modern urban literature" or "new sense school", but it was difficult to fully express the cultural atmosphere formed in Shanghai in a hundred years of history; in the 1990s, Shanghai's economy had a magic leap forward. This first brought people's imagination of Shanghai's future, and imagination needs a frame of reference, so the frame of reference becomes a kind of nostalgia, "Shanghai literature" began to appear in this nostalgic wind, "At that time, Zhang Ailing also began to come out, Paramount also began to come out, and all kinds of prosperous scenes in Shanghai in the 30s and 40s began to enter people's memories." At this time, the 'Haipai' began to have a little positive significance. ”

Nowadays, the induction and combing of "red culture, Shanghai culture, and Jiangnan culture" has also given a new era connotation to "Shanghai school". "In this sense, we need to redefine, re-understand, and reinterpret the 'Haipai.'" Chen Sihe said, "Historical development to today, some of Shanghai's original relatively glorious history has shown more and more positive significance, and the research and publication of the 'Shanghai School of Literature' will have a good reference effect on the cultural construction of the new era in Shanghai today." As for the connotation of 'Haipai', how to define it? How to inject the explanation of the New Hai School into this set of books? How to guide today through the combing and presentation of past literature? That's what we need to do to compile this set of books. ”

"Although the "Great Series of Haipai Literature" is a more comprehensive review of the 'history of Haipai literature', it also strives to make readers realize that re-examining 'Haipai literature' with a broader vision has new practical significance and reference value." Chen Zishan said.

Before the "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)", Chen Sihe and Chen Zishan also engaged in various research and publication work related to the "Haipai". They have cooperated in planning a set of "Haipai Novel Gallery", including "Liu Naou Novel Complete Compilation", "Ye Lingfeng Novel Complete Compilation (Upper and Lower)", "Teng Gu Novel Complete Compilation", "Mu Shiying Novel Complete Compilation", and the cover is also printed with old-fashioned monthly cards, which is very exquisite. There is also a set of "Hundred Literary Libraries on The Sea" compiled by the Shanghai Writers Association, which selects about 50 million words of representative works of more than 230 writers who appeared in the Shanghai area from the early 19th century to the middle of the 20th century in the scale of more than 120 volumes.

"The starting point of the compilation of the "Hundred Literary Libraries of Maritime Literature" is not mainly from the perspective of 'Hai School', but from the perspective of Shanghai's broad literature in modern times, including the red culture mentioned today. So that set of big books not only has the works of Shanghai writers, but also left-wing writers and other writers. Chen Zishan said, "We have done some sorting and introduction work in this regard before, but what comprehensively reflects the current understanding or grasp of the history of 'Hai school literature' should not be there." ”

He said that the entire editorial board team wants to select the recognized Haipai literary works through the "Haipai Literature Department", on the one hand, and also strive to discover representative Haipai literary works that are still ignored or even submerged, including the old style poems of various periods. In this way, let readers feel the colorful Shanghai school literature.

It is reported that the "Shanghai School of Literature Department (1872-1949)" plan consists of a volume of literary theory, a volume of popular novels, a volume of new literary novels, a volume of modern prose, a volume of modern prose, a volume of old poetry, a volume of new poetry, a volume of translation, and a volume of historical materials. Among them, old-style poetry, prose including non-fiction, and translated literature are included in quite new ideas. For the old style poetry, the editorial board proposed that the literary style of the old style poetry of the Shanghai School is traditional, but the theme is new, reflecting the current social situation at that time, and is an important channel for understanding the society and culture at that time. Another example is translation literature, which is a very prominent and important part of Haipai literature, which is mainly based on novels, and is involved in poetry, prose, drama, etc. The translation and publication of left-wing literature that began in the 1930s has also become an important feature of Haipai literature.
