What is "Haipai"? Led by Chen Si and Chen Zishan, the "Haipai Literature Department" was launched

"Haipai is a mixture of mixtures, innovations, and an eclectic and rebellious nature." On the afternoon of January 25, as one of the special planning projects for national key book publishing in the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)" held a project release and expert seminar at Fudan Jingshi Bookstore, and Chen Sihe, director of Fudan University Library and senior professor of liberal arts, told about his understanding of "Haipai".

What is "Haipai"? Led by Chen Si and Chen Zishan, the "Haipai Literature Department" was launched

Haipai literature originated from the formation of Haipai culture, and its symbol was tentatively set for the founding of the "Declaration" in 1872, and then the emergence of serial novels, and slowly formed a literary genre with urban cultural characteristics in the development of late Qing novels. "In the 1930s, there was a dispute between the Beijing school and the Shanghai school, and the 'Hai school' was once pejorative; in the 1980s, when scholars talked about the Shanghai school of literature, they mostly referred to it with specific terms such as modern urban literature or new feeling school, which was obviously difficult to cover all the cultural atmosphere and literary reflection formed in Shanghai over the past hundred years; from the 90s to the beginning of the new century, the Shanghai school literature became a nostalgic object." Chen Sihe said that today, with the development of the city of Shanghai, the concept of Haipai has become more and more positive, and the induction and combing of the three cultures of "red culture, Haipai culture and Jiangnan culture" have also given the connotation of the new era to "Haipai" at the theoretical level. In this context, compiling a relatively comprehensive and rich set of "Shanghai School Literature Series" is not only for the purpose of "returning to history", but more importantly, it is a reference and inspiration for the current and future urban cultural construction.

The "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)" is edited by Chen Sihe and Chen Zishan, famous chinese literary researchers, and the editorial board includes Zhang Wei, a research librarian at shanghai library, and Gao Yuanbao, Duan Huaiqing and Luan Meijian, professors of the Department of Chinese of Fudan University. In the preliminary discussion, the experts of the editorial board reached a consensus: Shanghai urban culture participated in the creation of modern Chinese literature with special elements, and directly played a role in the literary development of modern (1840-1919) to modern (1919-1949), and the Shanghai area has become an important town of modern Chinese literature. The distinctive "Haipai Literature" is a modern urban aesthetic construction with Shanghai as the object of writing, the decoder of the word "modern" in modern Chinese literature, which has created a unique literary ecology for the development of modern Chinese literature, has formed an important influence on the current Literary Creation and Cultural Construction in Shanghai, and is also one of the important sources of the thriving "New Haipai Culture" in the current Cultural Construction of Shanghai.

The "Department of Haipai Literature (1872-1949)" is composed of literary theory volumes, popular novels, new literary novels, modern prose volumes, modern prose volumes, old poetry volumes, new poetry volumes, translation volumes, and historical material volumes, etc., with an estimated 25 million words, hoping to comprehensively display and interpret Haipai literature. "A definition of Haipai literature is a glorious and arduous task", Chen Zishan said, how to compile characteristics on the experience accumulated by predecessors is the focus of this set of "Haipai Literature Department (1872-1949)", "from the literary level to sort out the development of Shanghai since modern times, as far as possible to present the various faces of Haipai literature, discover and excavate some writers' works that have been neglected in the past." ”

Judging from the current planned volume, old style poetry, prose including non-fiction, and translated literature have been incorporated into quite new ideas. For example, the old style poetry, the editorial board proposed that the Hai school literary poetry should include traditional themes, but the old style poetry at this time is no longer the old style poetry of the scholar. Haipai old style poetry, the literary style is traditional, but also popular, such as bamboo branch words, etc., more importantly, the theme of The old style poetry of Haipai is new, reflecting the social situation at that time, is an important channel to understand the society and culture at that time. Another example is translation literature, which is an extremely prominent and important part of Haipai literature, which is mainly based on novels, and is involved in poetry, prose, drama, etc., and the translation and publication of left-wing literature that began in the 1930s has also become an important feature of Haipai literature.

Yan Feng, chairman of Fudan University Press, said that in the academic community, the definition of Haipai literature needs to be re-discussed and revised, and the research needs of Haipai literature are far from matching and theory improvement and data collection are far from matching, compiling a set of multi-volume "Haipai Literature Department (1872-1949)" that has never been seen in history with the characteristics of Haipai literature as a volume, which has become an important basic academic work, and the publisher will fully cooperate and strive to form a set of high-quality masterpieces.

"In the process of compiling this set of books, it is our responsibility to complete the interpretation of Haipai literature and the definition of the connotation of Haipai from the theoretical understanding." Chen Sihe said.
