Ma Yuan was originally a general under Kui Hu of Longxi, and after the fall of Kui Hu, Ma Yuan defected to Liu Xiu, although Ma Yuan did not have much merit in the process of establishing the Eastern Han Dynasty, but he made great achievements in foreign wars. Ma Yuan remained in Longdi from the ninth year of Jianwu (33 AD) to the seventeenth year of Jianwu (41 AD) to help Liu Xiu stabilize the border and quell the Qiang rebellion.
At the end of the seventeenth year of Jianwu (41 AD), Ma Yuan rushed to Lingnan and twice quelled the Lingnan rebellion. In the twentieth year of Jianwu (44 AD), when the Xiongnu and Wuhuan invaded, it was also pacified by Ma Yuan. After returning, Ma Yuanguan was promoted to General Fubo, and the descendants respected Ma Yuan, calling him "Ma Fubo". Ma Chao in the Three Kingdoms era was a descendant of Ma Yuan.
When Ma Yuan was pacifying Lingnan for the second time, the army encountered a plague, but his general Geng Shu wrote back to Beijing, saying that Ma Yuan had no plan, delayed the fighter plane, and caused the army to be trapped by the plague. Liu Xiu sent Liang Song to rebuke Ma Yuan, and before he arrived, Ma Yuan had already died of illness, and Liang Song was at odds with Ma Yuan, so he took the opportunity to frame Ma Yuan, and Liu Xiu was furious and was not allowed to bury Ma Yuan.
It was not until the second year of the founding of the first year (78 AD) that Emperor Zhang of Han rehabilitated Ma Yuan, restored Ma Yuan's reputation, and posthumously honored Ma Yuan as "Zhongcheng". In addition, Ma Yuan's daughter was made empress of the Han Ming Emperor, which was also one of the main reasons why Ma Yuan could not be selected as the twenty-eight generals of Yuntai.
