With the introduction of national policies, it has become inevitable that cars will be equipped with EDR in the future.

China's EDR standard (C-EDR) has also been determined at the end of November 2019, and is divided into two stages: A and B.
The first phase will be implemented in 2021, requiring newly applied models to be able to record and read Class A data elements, and the second phase will be implemented from 2023, requiring newly applied models to record and read Class A B data elements.

EDR can record the vehicle's operation key data (such as vehicle speed, vehicle collision acceleration, steering wheel steering angle, engine operation status, airbag status, driver assistance system, driver's reaction action when the event occurs, and other important information) in the three stages of the vehicle before, during and after the collision.

It should be mentioned here that the trigger condition for the Event of EDR is a drastic change in the speed of the vehicle laterally or vertically. The reference American standard threshold is a change of 8KM/h within 125ms. However, the trigger does not mean that there must be a collision or accident, and the EDR standard also has a locking standard, once locked, the record data cannot be changed. China EDR standard locking conditions: irreversible restraint device (generally refers to any air bag) unfolded; the speed change of the vehicle in the X axis direction in the 150ms time interval is not less than 25km/h.
Installing EDR can play an important role in curbing serious traffic violations, as well as restraining drivers' bad driving behavior, preventing road traffic accidents, ensuring the safety of vehicles, and providing raw data for accident analysis and identification.
EDR faces the cost problem
For car companies, after the mandatory installation of EDR, it can greatly reduce the negative public opinion impact caused by unclear responsibilities after the accident; for consumers, after having EDR, there will be no unreasonable phenomenon after encountering an accident. But with the large-scale installation of EDR, there is also a question: who will bear this cost?
Regarding the cost of EDR, Tesla previously launched the EDR data extraction kit on the official websites of the United States and Canada, which was priced at $1200 (about 7768 yuan). After the "brake failure" incident, Tesla launched the event data logger EDR query software on its official website in the United States, and this service is currently only available in North America, and domestic Tesla users cannot use it temporarily.
For such a nearly 8,000 yuan of equipment, its high cost is obviously a great burden for car companies, consumers are more sensitive to price, if the price of new cars is greatly increased, it may lead to sluggish sales, but internal digestion, which is not to make money for their own car companies.
Although from the perspective of the entire environment, the state's mandatory installation of car "black boxes" is a very positive thing, if there is no corresponding subsidy to car companies, will the implementation of car companies be greatly reduced? If enforcement is not in place, is there a corresponding penalty? These are all questions worth thinking about in the relevant departments.
