In April 1351, Jia Lu commanded 150,000 local migrant workers and 20,000 troops to begin to control the mouth of the Yellow River. These migrant workers were already hungry and miserable, and when they arrived at the construction site, they not only had to bear heavy labor and supervise the beatings and scolding of officers and men, but also did not have enough to eat, their food rations were withheld, and a wave of resentment accumulated in their chests. Han Shantong, Liu Futong, and others took advantage of this dissatisfaction and stepped up preparations to launch an uprising. On the one hand, they stepped up their propaganda of "Maitreya Buddha was born" and "the Ming King was born"; on the other hand, they imitated the practice of peasant uprisings in previous generations and created proverbs.

In late April, migrant workers excavated the Huanglinggang Ancient River Channel and excavated the cyclops. Seeing the stone people, compared with the songs, the Kaihe migrant workers were astonished, and they told each other that the time for the people to rebel had come. In early May, Han Shantong and Liu Futong launched an uprising at Yingshang in Yingzhou (颍上, in present-day Yingshang, Anhui). Although the migrant workers in Kaihe did not participate in the initial uprising, but always insisted on the construction site of the river, the realization of the proverb of the one-eyed man excavated from Huanglinggang provided the ideological basis for the later development and growth of the Red Turban Army in the Central Plains, and its potential and indirect influence should not be underestimated.

Map of the Yuan Dynasty in 1355 and a record of major events

In 1355, many good ministers were demoted and killed, and after gaoyou war, taking advantage of the defeat of the Yuan army, the northern Red Turban Army gradually recovered from the predicament. In order to strengthen the ties and dispatch of the various Red Turban Armies in the north and change the situation of fighting separately in the past, Liu Futong decided to establish the Northern Red Turban Army regime. In February of the fifteenth year of Zhengzheng (1355), he welcomed Han Lin'er, the son of Han Shantong, from the river of Zhongshan (present-day Zhongshan, Anhui) to Mi Prefecture (present-day Mi County, Anhui), and proclaimed him emperor, the Xiaoming King (that is, "Ming Wang's birth"), the national name Song, the era name Longfeng, and the capital Bozhou. Han Shantong's wife was called empress dowager. After the establishment of the Song regime, the rulers of the Yuan Dynasty hurriedly mobilized troops to suppress it. In the first year of LongFeng (1355), LiuDan, the sworn enemy of the Red Turban Army, was promoted to Pingzhang of Henan Province, responsible for attacking the Great Song Red Turban Army. In December, Batulu defeated the Red Turban Army and captured Taikang (太康, in modern Taikang, Henan), and The Song chancellor Luo Wensu was killed. The Yuan army besieged the Song capital of Haozhou, and Han Lin'er was forced to retreat to Anfeng (安丰塘, in present-day Nan'an Fengtang, Shou County, Anhui). In March of the second year of Long Feng, Liu Futong fought a major battle with the Yuan army in Bozhou, and the defeat of Baduru was defeated, and the Song capital was de'an.
