Ace 5th Army

The 5th Army, the ace of the National Revolutionary Army, had brilliant achievements in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and in the War of Liberation, it was a fierce enemy of our army, the commander of the army was Xiong Xiaosan, and his father was a famous underground party important figure of the CCP.

Xiong Xiaosan, born in 1905, a native of Changsha, Hunan Province, graduated from the sixth term of the Whampoa Military Academy, lieutenant general of the National Revolutionary Army, named after him the third brother in the family.

In 1925, when the "May Thirtieth" massacre occurred, Changsha set off an unprecedented wave of anti-imperialist anger, and he joined the propaganda team and went to the countryside to perform to arouse the people. Later, he applied for the sixth term of the Whampoa Military Academy, and after graduation, he joined the 1st Cavalry Brigade as a probationary officer. Since then, he has successively served as platoon commander, company commander, regiment deputy and other positions.

At the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Liao Kang was transferred to the commander of the 45th Division of the National Revolutionary Army, and the deputy division commander Xiong Xiaosan succeeded him as the commander of the 200th Division. In September 1948, he took over as commander of the Fifth Army (known as the "Five Aces" of the Kuomintang Army), and on September 22, he was awarded the rank of major general.

Xiong Jinyue, general manager of Xinhua Daily (first from left)

At the end of 1939, when Xiong Xiaosan was the commander of the 65th Regiment of the 22nd Division of the Fifth Army, the ace of the Nationalist Army, he once led his troops back to Chongqing for recuperation. In Chongqing, he heard a shocking news, his father Xiong Jinyue, who had not been in contact for many years, was also in Chongqing at this time, the general manager of Xinhua Daily, and a famous communist.

Xiong Jinyue, born in 1886, was ruled by his parents when he was young, and married the daughter of the Jiang family in the same village. The daughter of the Jiang family is a small foot, with three boys and four girls. His three sons, two from Literature, succeeded in their studies, and the third son joined the army.

Among the daughters, one named Dawu, married Liao Jiaquan of Ganshan Township, who changed his name to Liao Mosha, and later joined the revolution, and later served as the united front work minister of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee.

Xiong Jinyue was a big figure among CCP agents, alias Chuxiong, who was born in 1886 in Changsha, Hunan Province, to a family of doctors. At the age of 10, he entered a private school and received a traditional old-fashioned education. At the age of 20, he entered the teacher training crash course run by Xu Teli and others, and not only learned some new ideas, but also took Xu Teli's moral personality as an example from then on, and was known for his seriousness and honesty and justice.

He participated in the Xinmin Society in Hunan, also participated in the May Fourth Movement, served as a primary school teacher, and also served as the director of the famous Hunan Self-Study University; during the Northern Expedition, he also served as the director of the changsha county property custody department, and was entrusted to provide funds for the activities of trade unions and peasant associations.

In the spring of 1931, due to Gu Shunzhang's rebellion, Xiong Jinyue was forced to move to Honghu Su District as minister of propaganda and education and secretary general of the provincial Soviet. Because he was good at financial management, from 1921, he was in charge of finance in the Xinmin Society, and once raised travel expenses for Mao Zedong, He Shuheng and others.

After the defeat of the Great Revolution in 1927, he joined the Communist Party of China and embarked on the revolutionary road. After arriving in Shanghai in the spring of 1928, he served as an accountant for the central organs of the Communist Party of China, responsible for financial management and fundraising, known as "Boss Bear".

Xiong Jinyue claimed to be a businessman from other places who came to Shanghai to do gauze business, and at No. 447 Yunnan Road, next door to the Tiantou Stage on Shanghai's Fourth Road (now Fuzhou Road), he rented three rooms on the second floor, claimed to be operating Hunan gauze, and hung up the "Fuxing Cloth Zhuang" signboard.

Since the sign of the "Fuxing" business name was played, Xiong Jinyue had to dress up as a rich businessman, who was in his 40s at the time and did not have a boss lady or aunt around, which was obviously inappropriate. Zhou Enlai considered transferring a female comrade to act as the boss lady, and could also send a whistle for secret meetings. As for the leaders who meet here, they all come in as customers, and it is not easy to attract attention.

Xiong Jinyue Zhu Duanshou and his wife

The female comrade who was transferred was zhu Duanshou, born in 1908, 19 years old at the time, also from Changsha, Hunan Province, and was once a student of Xiong Jinyue. Zhu Duanshou joined the Communist Party in 1925 and engaged in underground work in Hunan, with rich experience and progressive thinking.

In this way, this pair of fake bosses and bosses began to run the "Fuxing" business, and they made the business flourish. On the other hand, the second floor of the business became a secret meeting place, and the boss downstairs shouted business while guarding the wind. In his spare time, Xiong Jinyue also cooks first-hand Hunan dishes and teaches Zhu Duanshou ancient Chinese and Gelu poetry, and the two get along well and become more and more intimate.

Because Xiong and Zhu knew each other in Hunan and had a good impression of each other, it can also be regarded as a long-term love affair, which was promoted by Zhou Enlai, and in 1928, Xiong Jinyue and Zhu Duanshou held a wedding ceremony on the second floor of the Tao Lechun Hotel on Fuzhou Road.

During his underground work, Xiong Jinyue exerted his outstanding business talents, in order to establish more secret liaison locations and make more money for the party's work, Xiong Jinyue presided over the opening of 3 hotels and a money house. In addition, he also ran a printing factory with Chairman Mao's brother Mao Zemin, a weaving factory with Qian Zhiguang, a foreign goods store with Cao Zijian, and became a shareholder of a large cloth shop.

These shops and factories have made a lot of money and have been handed over as funds for our Party's activities. A large amount of funds and materials have been provided for the smooth work of the party.

At the beginning of 1938, appointed by Vice Chairman Zhou Enlai, Xiong Jinyue was appointed as the general manager of xinhua daily, a central organ newspaper, and Zhu Duanshou was appointed as the chief of the accounting section.

After 1927, the father and son took different paths, so they were not heard from for 10 years. After arriving in Chongqing, Xiong Xiaosan's troops were stationed in Hutouyan, Hualongqiao, Chongqing, very close to the Yingzui Cliff where the Xinhua Daily was stationed. Despite the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communists during the War of Resistance, Xiong Xiaosan did not dare to contact his father publicly.

He once said to Shangfeng and his colleagues: "I have no father, only a distant uncle, and I have not seen each other for more than 20 years." But as his son, although he could not fulfill his filial piety, it was also common for people to miss their father.

Before Chinese New Year's Eve 1939, Xiong Xiaosan's regimental headquarters killed pigs. He asked the service soldiers to send more than a dozen pounds of pork to Eagle's Mouth Rock and entrust people to transfer them to the newspaper, which can also be regarded as a little heart for his father.

Xiong Jinyue reported the situation to the organization and decided to send Zhu Duanshou to Hutouyan to contact Xiong Xiaosan. When Zhu Duanshou was studying at the Changsha Women's Normal School, he and Xiong Xiaosan were acquainted, and they can also be regarded as Xiong Xiaosan's sister. Zhu Duanshou pretended to go out to visit the door, detoured from the Eagle's Mouth Rock, and walked into Xiong Xiaosan's regimental headquarters.

Xiong Xiaosan saw this former student sister, the current stepmother, and knew it. Neither of them broke down, only talking about daily life, trivia in hunan hometown, etc. The two talked for two or three hours, and Xiong Xiaosan instructed the cooks to prepare dinner and talk while eating. Only then did Xiong Xiaosan gently ask Zhu Duanshou to bring a message to the old father, and he said:

"In the past, because we took different paths, we have not heard anything in these years. Now, the Kuomintang and the Communists cooperate in resisting Japan, our goals are the same, and our two parties should unite to restore our splendid rivers and mountains..." Zhu Duanshou smiled and nodded in agreement. When they left, Xiong Xiaosan and his wife sent her to Eagle's Mouth Rock, and also sent some live crucian carp and a piece of bacon to the old father to eat.

After returning from Xiong Xiaosan's regimental headquarters, Zhu Duanshou immediately reported what he had learned to Vice Chairman Zhou. After listening to it, Vice Chairman Zhou smiled satisfactorily: "Not bad, there is a harvest!" ”

In those years in Chongqing, Zhu Duanshou always had to find time to go to Xiongxiao three times a month. Every time Zhu Duanshou returned home, he would send some gifts for her to bring back, a delicate relationship that persisted even after Xiong Xiaosan rushed to the anti-Japanese front. From Xiong Xiaosan, Zhu Duanshou obtained a lot of useful information.

Sometimes, Zhu Duanshou would also encounter some unfamiliar faces in xiongxiaosanjia, including officers, politicians, or mrs. Kuo who came to the house to rub mahjong. When people saw Zhu Duanshou's dignified demeanor and clever speech, it was inevitable that he would whisper.

Mrs. Xiong smiled lightly and said, "She's a middle school classmate of our laughing three." Her husband was a very rich capitalist! ”

The commander of the 5th Army, the ace of the Nationalist Army, met his father in Chongqing during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and found out that his father was a Communist

After the victory of the War of Resistance, father and son were their masters. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Xiong Jinyue served as vice president of the National Red Cross Society, and Chairman Mao, Premier Zhou and other party and state leaders spoke highly of him.

In early 1966, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, Premier Zhou specially brought two bottles of Shaoxing flower carving old wine that Deng Xiaoping gave him to celebrate his birthday.

In 1973, Xiong Jinyue was critically ill and unable to speak, and Premier Zhou personally visited the hospital despite his serious illness. The two posthumous poems handed over by Mrs. Zhu Duanshou to her husband were ——— "Sigh that I have resigned happily, and wish the jun to always protect myself", in order to express Xiong Jinyue's deep feelings and final wishes for the old comrades-in-arms in the party.

Xiong Xiaosan also continued to improve his position in the ace Fifth Army, taking over as commander in 1948. However, just over a month after he was promoted to commander, he led his troops to evacuate Xuzhou with Qiu Qingquan's corps, and as a result, hundreds of thousands of troops fell into the encirclement of the People's Liberation Army on the way, trapped in the snow and wind of Chen Guanzhuang, the officers and men were hopeless to reinforce the army, hungry and cold, and even the old superiors Du Yuming and Qiu Qingquan were sad and miserable, and they were helpless.

However, Xiong Xiaosan is a famous optimist, and when he sees them, he sighs and makes a few jokes from time to time to make everyone happy.

Why isn't Xiong Xiaosan afraid? He didn't have a communist father, but because he had the art of getting out.

The crowd survived the encirclement until January 9, 1949. On the afternoon of the same day, the People's Liberation Army launched a general offensive, and everyone knew that the war situation had reached its final moment, and the officers and men of the Nationalist army fled in all directions, and even Du Yuming and Qiu Qingquan had to flee from chen guanzhuang to Chen zhuang, where the headquarters of the Fifth Army was located, to "survive."

However, in the face of the heroic People's Liberation Army, the Fifth Army could not break through the encirclement. Du Yuming and Qiu Qingquan had the appearance of waiting to die. At dusk, Xiong Xiaosan actually said to Qiu Qingquan in a joke way: "If a person acts, there is a way to get out." ”

Qiu Qingquan asked urgently, "Is there any way for you to get out?"

Xiong Xiaosan still said, "As long as I am allowed to act personally, I am sure that I can go out." "How to get out of the PLA's iron barrel-like encirclement?" He still didn't answer clearly.

In the evening, the battle situation completely collapsed, and Du Yuming and Qiu Qingquan prepared to risk death to break through. Unexpectedly, Xiong Xiaosan could not find a figure. The two had no choice but to leave the "master" Xiong Xiaosan and make a breakthrough, resulting in one prisoner and one death, and the Fifth Army, a Kuomintang ace army, was finally completely annihilated by the People's Liberation Army.

And where did Xiong Xiaosan go? He did not die in battle, nor did he become a prisoner, nor did he go to his own father, Xiong Jinyue.

A dozen days later, he actually appeared in Hong Kong, thousands of miles away. How did Xiong Xiaosan "act personally" and "fly" out of the plaster-like encirclement of the People's Liberation Army?

No one knows, and it is still a mystery.

Since then, father and son have never seen each other again. Xiong died in January 1973 at the age of 87. However, in the 1980s, Xiong Xiao returned to the mainland three times, and he was invited to return to China to meet with Zhu Duanshou and other relatives. He died of illness in Beijing in September 1987 at the age of 82.
