After Hu Shi came to the United States, he could only live in a very small apartment building, because he was weak and sick, the living expenses were relatively large, Hu Shi felt the hardships of life for the first time, he resigned as a maid and began to take care of the family affairs with his wife, because Hu Shi's wife did not know English, so many trivial matters in the family had to be done by Hu Shi himself. Hu Shi suffers from severe heart disease, often sudden attacks, heart disease needs treatment costs are relatively high, such a life makes Hu Shi feel very difficult, and this life is still up to 9 years.
In August 1957, Hu Shi was recommended by the public as the president of the Academia Sinica, and hu Shi also chose to return to Taiwan. After returning, Chiang Kai-shek treated Hu Shi with respect, but within a month of returning to China, he received the news that his son Hu Sidu had committed suicide, which was the biggest blow to Hu Shi in his later years and made him sad. In September 1960, Hu Shi again received bad news that his friend Lei Zhen had been sentenced to 10 years in prison, which made him ill for nearly two months.
On February 24, 1962, Hu Shi collapsed at the table near the end of the cocktail party, and he never woke up after this fall.
