Liu Ying was a native of Shandong, highly skilled in martial arts, and joined Feng Yuxiang's Northwest Army in his early years. He joined the revolutionary ranks in 1926, was sent to the Soviet Union to study military affairs, and after returning to China, he engaged in long-term security work and punished many traitors. In 1929, he went to the red base area of Eyu and Anhui and successively served as the chief of staff, deputy division commander, and division commander of the division. The Red Fourth Front was the commander of the 73rd Division at the time of its establishment, and commanded the famous Battle of Tofu Shop and successfully ambushed the 2nd Division, an elite enemy force.
