Su Shi was born in Meishan, Meizhou. His mother Cheng was born in a hugely wealthy family in Meishan, because his father often traveled abroad to study, and Su Shi and his brother Su Rui were taught by Cheng himself. The reason why Su Shi asked this question was because Fan Huan was a short-lived person who only lived for thirty-three years; and because he was trapped in the crime of "hooking the party", he was arrested by the edict, and voluntarily surrendered to death in order not to involve others. Ancient readers paid attention to "gentlemen do not stand under dangerous walls"; ordinary people also paid attention to "seeking good fortune and avoiding evil". People like Fan Huan, who "know that they will die, but also voluntarily send them to death", are a fool in the eyes of some people in the world, and should not be a smart person.
To Su Shi's question, I didn't expect Cheng Shi to answer like this: "If you can be Fan Huan, can't I be Fan Huan's mother?" Fan Huan's mother praised Fan Huan's bravery and righteousness. When Fan Huan said goodbye to his mother, his mother did not persuade him to run away and take refuge, but said to him: "You can now be on a par with Li Bing and Du Mi, and there is no regret in death!" With a good reputation and wanting to live a long life, how can this be the best of both worlds? ”
It turned out that Fan Huan was one of the "Eight Gu" of the Eastern Han Dynasty and one of the "Eight Juns of Jiangxia". His mother's mention of Li Bing and Du Mi, as well as Wang Chang, were all celebrities at that time and were highly admired by intellectuals. The tai students even regarded them as the embodiment of justice and knowledge, and once made up a special slip of the tongue for them: "Li Yuanli (Li Yi), the model of the world, Chen Zhongju (Chen Fan), the world's junxiu Wang Shumao (Wang Chang). Fan Huan was able to be on a par with them, indicating that Fan Huan was also a model of intellectuals in the world at that time.
In fact, Fan Huan was also a model of being an official at that time. He had a noble sentiment from an early age, and was promoted because of filial piety and integrity. He is a clean and honest official, impartial, and has the "ambition to clarify the world." Once, the imperial court sent him to inspect the area of Jizhou where famine and thieves were rampant, and when he first arrived in Jizhou, the local officials who had embezzled and accepted bribes were so frightened that they all resigned and left.
From the questions and answers of Su Shi's mother and son, it can be seen that Su Shi's ambition since childhood is to take Fan Huan as an example. As the saying goes, "The power of example is infinite." Fan Huan's influence on Su Shi was undoubtedly enormous. For example, the merits of later officials are also like Ji Fan huan, who always keeps to his heart and never bends his heart to meet him. He opposed Wang Anshi's change of law, and adopted an attitude toward the new law, which was to openly refuse to implement it, or to "promote the law for the benefit of the people", that is, to only implement the part of the new law that was beneficial to the people; and when the reformers lost power, he opposed the conservatives' abolition of the new law, advocating the use of their strengths, so that they were attacked by the old and new parties, degraded several times, and even arrested and imprisoned.
Su Shi and Fan Huan are both wise men, don't they know how to protect themselves?
Before he voluntarily went to his death, fan huan said to his son after saying goodbye to his mother: "If I want to make Ru evil, then evil cannot be done; if Ru is good, then I am not evil." He did not teach his son what to do, but told him that "evil should not be done", but for good, sometimes the result will inevitably be like his. Then let him choose for himself.
Both Su Shi and Fan Huan knew the result of their actions and still had no remorse, because this was also their own choice. What kind of person to be and what kind of road to take, the key lies in choice. The criteria for selection often determine a person's future achievements. In the process of growing up, their own choices are important, but the influence of their parents cannot be ignored. If Su Shi's mother, fearing that her son's learning from Fan Huan's one-sided tendons would be short-lived in the future, opposed his chosen standards of conduct, and even simply helped him choose those who understood Mingzhe to protect himself as standards, it is difficult to imagine, if Su Shi, because of the education and influence of his parents, was also indoctrinated with the idea of mingzhe self-preservation, such as "it is better to die than to live", then is it possible for him to achieve those literary achievements that shock the ancient world and the present?
