The successful completion of this 174,000 cubic meter LNG carrier, which represents the highest technical level in the field of large-scale LNG carriers in the world, is of great significance to ensure the safety of energy transportation, effectively enhance the independent capacity of the mainland LNG transportation industry chain, and help the mainland build a manufacturing power and a maritime power.

It is reported that the LNG carrier construction project plans to build 12 large LNG carriers, the first ship "Green Energy Ying" LNG carrier with a total length of 299 meters, a width of 46.4 meters, a depth of 26.25 meters, the use of the latest generation of double stern fin line type, equipped with a number of low-carbon and energy-saving technologies, the use of steel up to 25,000 tons, its deck area is equivalent to 3 standard football fields, can load 174,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, can meet the gas needs of 7 million families for a month.

CNOOC Limited took the lead in naming Jiangsu Binhai LNG Terminal as Yancheng "Green Energy Port", and plans to promote its use in Ningbo LNG and Zhuhai LNG, which has gradually formed a brand effect.

"Green Energy Ying" is the fifth-generation "Changheng series" LNG carrier independently designed and built in accordance with the world's latest concept, the best equipment and the best environmental protection, which has four significant highlights: low comprehensive energy consumption, wide compatibility of cabin types, strong cargo carrying capacity and good route matching, and can efficiently adapt to various operational requirements of diversified routes. ”

How can LNG develop synergistically?

With the development of the mainland economy and the promotion of the "dual carbon" goal, the mainland's LNG imports have grown rapidly in recent years, reaching 71.32 million tons in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 12.6%, becoming the world's largest LNG importer. Maritime transportation of LNG is an important link connecting LNG resources and domestic users, and improving the level of independent and controllable LNG transportation is a key measure to ensure the "main artery" of energy transportation.

"Having a larger, more autonomous LNG fleet will help us better grasp the trade initiative and enhance the mainland's bargaining power and voice in the international LNG market." Zhu Yanyan, Director of CNOOC Gas & Power Group Resource Center, said that while ensuring the safe and stable supply of domestic energy, various forms of LNG trade innovation can be carried out, and more participation and influence on the international energy cooperation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of world oil and gas trade, so as to help the virtuous cycle interaction between the international and domestic markets.

FOB (Free on Board) trade can provide more operational convenience for the shipping and international trade of goods, and greatly enhance the trade flexibility of resource importers. The implementation of the project, on the basis of expanding the scope of access to LNG resources in the mainland, can further extend the LNG industry chain of CNOOC through LNG receiving stations and LNG transportation and bunkering vessels, increase the sustainable development space of enterprises, and is of great significance to the adjustment of the mainland's energy structure, improve environmental quality, and promote the coordinated development of economy and environment.

"Since 2000, CNOOC has built 10 domestic large LNG carriers, and after the first and second phases of the FOB project, 12 large LNG carriers will be added." Wang Wei, deputy general manager of CNOOC Energy Development Co., Ltd., explained to the cover news reporter that after all 22 carriers are put into operation, they can be used as offshore green energy 'mobile floating tanks', optimize ship transportation through scheduling, realize resource portfolio allocation, and adjust import strategies in a timely manner according to changes in domestic energy demand, and are expected to ship back 16 million tons of LNG to China every year.

LNG occupies an increasingly important position in the global energy structure, and with the increase in the demand for international LNG trade, the demand for LNG shipping market is also growing rapidly. From 2022 to 2026, 14 new LNG projects will be added internationally, and a total of about 227 large LNG carriers will be needed to provide supporting transportation services. At the same time, with the rapid development of the LNG industry in the mainland, the LNG transportation business will also usher in a golden age of development.

The LNG carrier construction project focuses on building a safe, flexible, green and low-cost LNG transportation fleet with Chinese characteristics, which will further enhance the mainland's ability to independently control the whole chain and cycle of LNG transportation, and actively contribute to the national energy security.
