Both Western and Chinese pseudo-historians believe that the accepted age of the pyramids is wrong, with the difference being that the former believes that the real age should be earlier, while the latter thinks that it is later.
German newspapers in 2014 reported:
"Two German amateurs tried to get there because they were believers in the ancient alien theory, and they wanted to prove that the Great Pyramid was a creation of Atlantis, and the Egyptian authorities arrested them.

During a trip to Egypt in April 2013, Domink Goldlitz and Stephen Erdmann, along with a German filmmaker, were allowed to enter parts of the Great Pyramids of Giza, which are normally off-limits to the public. They smuggled the samples back to Germany and planned to make a documentary.
Ben Radford, who writes for Live Science, said: The group reportedly took several items from the pyramid, including... A sample of a cartouche (identification inscription) of Pharaoh Khufu (also known as Chiops). Rather than archaeologists, Goldlitz and Erdman have been described as "hobbyists" who allegedly smuggled them out of the country in violation of strict antiquities laws, according to news reports.
In November, a self-released trailer for a documentary on YouTube, detailing and exposing their exploits, drew almost universal condemnation and angered Egyptian authorities, according to The Artist.
After the controversy erupted, the German embassy in Cairo hastened to issue a statement emphasizing that neither Goerlitz nor Erdman had anything to do with the embassy or the German Archaeological Institute.
In addition to the three Germans, six Egyptians were detained in connection with the case, including several guards and inspectors from the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, who allowed them into the pyramids, Live Science said.

Most scholars date the mark to the time when the pyramids were built around 2500 BC, while other theorists, including two German researchers, have long claimed that the cartouche was a fake, painted in 1837 by its discoverer, Colonel Howard Weiss, to help him secure further funding for his exploration. To prove their claims, Goldlitz and Erderman allegedly smuggled pigment samples from Egypt to the University of Dresden for further study; By demonstrating the modernity component of the pigments, they hoped to raise the likelihood that the Great Pyramids were built by a civilization much older than the ancient Egyptians.
In December, in a letter to Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities, Goerlitz and Erdman apologized for the vandalism, offered to pay compensation for the damages, and stressed that they did not mean damage to the pyramids.
Mohamed Ibrahim, Egypt's head of antiquities, has so far rejected their apologies.

The conspiracy theories supported by Goldlitz and Erdman did not appear in a vacuum; Instead, they were widely popularized by best-selling authors such as Erich von Daniken, whose book The Chariots of the Gods was first published in 1968. These authors claim that the real builders of the pyramids were not the ancient Egyptians, but someone else, such as aliens or the inhabitants of the legendary Atlantis.
The carbon-14 age of the Pyramid of Khufu has caused a lot of controversy.
