Penn posthumously awarded a degree in architecture, a tribute to China's architectural pioneers

The University of Pennsylvania recently announced that it will award a belated bachelor's degree in architecture to Chinese architectural pioneer Lin Huiyin at the graduation ceremony of the Weizman School of Design on May 18 next year. This initiative is not only a commemoration and recognition of Lin Huiyin, but also a tribute to China's construction industry in an era.

Between 1918 and 1941, 23 Chinese students studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. After returning to China, these students became pioneers in China's construction industry and architectural education, and devoted themselves to the construction of China's fast-growing cities and towns. They have been hailed as "the first generation of modern Chinese architects," and the only woman and the only student not awarded a degree in architecture at Penn is Lin Huiyin.

Now, the Penn Wharton China Center is exhibiting the exhibition "Built in China: A Century of Modern Architecture Dialogue." A 15-foot-long panel showcasing the 23 Chinese graduates stands out, with Lin Huiyin in the center. This is the best recognition of her talent, achievements and contributions.

According to the exhibition's lead curator, Professor Lin Zhongjie of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the Weizman School of Design at Pennsylvania, Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng entered the University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 1924, when they both wanted to pursue architectural degrees. However, Penn's architecture department does not admit female students because of compulsory courses that are not suitable for girls, such as art classes for male model sketching and construction courses that teach construction techniques.

However, Lin Huiyin did not give up because of this. She made a career in fine art and poured her talent and passion into the field of architectural design. Her focus on functionality and practicality in her design has left a fruitful legacy for the Chinese construction industry. Under her leadership, the works she and Liang Sicheng designed have become classics of modern Chinese architecture, such as the Monument to the People's Heroes and China's first National Museum.

Despite receiving a degree from Penn, Lin's contributions and influence in the field of architecture are immeasurable. She was the first female architect in China and one of the pioneers of modern architecture in China. Her design talent, academic contributions and leadership skills were not only unique in the Chinese architectural community at that time, but also had a profound impact on the global construction industry.

This decision by the University of Pennsylvania in the United States is a tribute to Lin Huiyin, a great female architect, and also a memorial to China's modern architectural industry.
