▲ Ni Nan, a traditional Chinese ancient village in Bishan Village ©

The site is located in a traditional village with a long history, surrounded by traditional houses with typical Hui elements. There are not only Ming and Qing dynasties with a long history, but also modern and contemporary newly built villagers' houses. The location of our site is a relatively deep area of the village, and to get here, you have to go through the wide and narrow winding lanes in the village.

When I first came to inspect the site, I was still a little confused. The car can't go directly to the site, the buildings in the village are uneven, the site is limited, and the scenery is not good.

However, when I was surveying, I stood in the middle of the site, looking at the surrounding blue tiles and white walls and the cascading horse head walls. Smoke rose in the distance, and the sound of the meal wafted into the nose as the smell of firewood smoke wafted into the nose. I suddenly wondered if it was possible to put aside some stereotypes and labels, start from the actual site, hide the building in the village, and create an introverted solitary world. Integrate into the village, but there is a space that has an extreme contrast with the seemingly chaotic, intricate and diverse environment outside!

01

Finding order in disorder

▲概念草图 © y.ad studio

The architectural texture of traditional Chinese villages is formed through natural growth and historical precipitation, which is scattered and full of vitality. The same is true of the surrounding architectural texture, which is not horizontal and vertical, but in a crooked and irregular shape, which is very disorderly.

At first, it did cause a certain amount of trouble, and I always felt that cramming a building block into such a compact site felt that there was no "view" or "space", and the utilization rate was not high. After thinking about it repeatedly, "If we want to make an inward-looking space, why not introduce some Chinese garden thinking?" Completely isolated from the external environment, creating an internal world, and creating an extremely pure, pure and quiet internal space in the enclosure full of complexity. ”

After deciding on the principles, I originally wanted to make a modern building that contrasts with the surrounding buildings. However, the competent government department approved that "Bishan Village, as a traditional ancient village, has the principle of landscape protection, and must have elements of emblem-style architecture." "But we don't want to reproduce a traditional emblem architecture, the formal inheritance is neither new and breakthrough, nor does it conform to the Xi of contemporary people's life and use, we prefer to inherit some of its spiritual core rather than appearance and form." Therefore, "how to combine traditional architectural elements with modern forms and lifestyles?" has always been a key question for us.

The design strategy of the site has not been significantly adjusted. After filling in the various functions, we retained the century-old trees and ancient wells in the site, and then implanted the courtyards and patios into each building block, and embedded large or small inner courtyards in the gaps of each block to transform and transition between virtual and real, and form a visual center of gravity. While creating a rich visual image of the interior, it also forms a transition and connection between the interior and exterior of the building and between nature through the inner courtyard and patio.

02

Dynamic visual sensations

When setting the flow of space, we set up a lot of twists and transitions. I hope that with the rhythm of space, the flow of people, and the wandering of sight, we can change the scenery step by step. With the trajectory of people moving forward and pausing, going up or down in space, different bodily sensations and experiences are created, so as to respond to "space", "time" and "emotion", and perceive the diversity and richness of space.

Therefore, we unconventionally placed the common living room and reception area in the center of the building, radiating from the center and all around. From the entrance, you enter the front courtyard, then turn to the entrance to freeze your gaze on the wall of the entrance, then turn through the pool, stairs and inner courtyard to finally reach the reception area. We hope that when people enter this building, they will begin to organize their thoughts and adjust their minds, although this is a short walking path, but when he walks in this "uncertain space", he can feel new and stimulate his exploration and curiosity about this space.

Pushing open the door from the complex village laneway outside to enter a space full of meaning, people have a different kind of thought and inner joy. The experience culminates in a rooftop terrace, a watchtower, from a deep space to a sudden view. Stand on the terrace and watchtower and look out at the mountains, look back at the inner courtyard, and look down at the rooftops. Through the creation of this series of space size, field of view, distance and centripetal and outward, people have a dynamic visual experience.

We hope that the activities in the building will not be in conflict or interference with the surrounding private houses, and we do not want it to be disturbed by the surrounding environment, nor do we want to disturb the surrounding villagers, so as to truly achieve harmony and symbiosis. Therefore, through the staggering and layout of the space, an inward-looking layout is completely isolated from the outside world, so that the people who are active in the building are not disturbed by the outside world or interfere with the outside world.

▲ Open the window to borrow the scene, and the frame scene is mottled by the horse-head wall ©

The walls and courtyards of the surrounding residential buildings are hardly windowed, creating perspectives and landscapes through the inner courtyards and patios, and interacting with nature in the internal gaps. In some spaces where the windows have to be opened but are very close to the neighbors, in order to retain a certain degree of privacy and comfort, we use visual dislocation to avoid it. For example, high windows that break through the conventional height viewing angle or extremely low windows can ensure light and ventilation while avoiding direct visual vision. At the same time, he also tried to create a frame for the window, frame the mottled ancient brick wall outside into a painting, and shape the green and vibrant plant courtyard into a window, or frame the Bishan Mountain in the distance.

We try to make every room have a different view. Whether it is "borrowing from afar, borrowing from neighbors, borrowing from above, borrowing from below, or borrowing from time to time", people can have a beautiful view from the window from indoors. The artistic conception and atmosphere of "secluded", "elegant" and "relaxed" are implanted into the space.

We try to make a new living attempt through these, and we don't want it to be just a poor product with a living function. Rather, I hope that it will be an experience place full of surprise, joy of life, spatial artistic conception and emotional sustenance. The creation of space allows people to experience purity in complexity and diversity, feel tradition in contemporary, step into peace from the hustle and bustle, feel time and feel quiet. Perceive "uncertainty" and "surprise" in immutability.

Communion and rebirth

Yan Yang Architectural Design|In the thousand-year-old village, the hotel architectural space is reshaped by the classical gardening method

▲The magnolia tree © that coexists in harmony with the architecture is a natural architectural photography

The magnolia tree in the site, which is nearly 200 years old, is an alien species, and the villagers said that it was brought back from Shanghai to plant by the villagers who were in business. We also did not fill in the old water well in the original site, but incorporated it into the building, and we hope to preserve some memories of the past while growing with it......

▲The continuation and rebirth © of traditional elements is natural architectural photography

In the Huangshan area, the architectural element of the horse head wall is not only blooming everywhere, but also regarded as a symbol of "Hui architecture". The practice that new buildings must also add "historical elements" is sometimes a bit repulsive as an architect. I always feel that new buildings should be superimposed in a contemporary way, rather than continuing and repeating the practices of the past. We hope that there will be a crossover of time and space, a staggering of time, and a communion that echoes modernity and tradition. The most important thing is to conform to the life and aesthetics of contemporary people, and not to reproduce or imitate. Therefore, in addition to the architectural form, more attention will be paid to the shaping of space, and how to make it more humane and more in line with the habits, use and aesthetics of contemporary people's Xi. Use a language and form that conforms to the contemporary era to do a connection and inheritance. It not only maintains its charm but also wants to make some changes, and use a new way to continue and integrate to achieve a state of symbiosis. It is not inconsistent but also unique.

▲The architectural fusion © of ancient green bricks and modern glass bricks is a natural architectural photography

We use green brick as the main building material. First, we feel that the green bricks are more compatible with the surrounding traditional buildings, and the second is that we feel that the green bricks can also have many expressions, and they have strong compatibility. We match the green bricks with glass bricks, dissipate the heaviness and heaviness of the green bricks, so that he presents a light and modern visual sense, and the collision of glass bricks and green bricks can create a different look.

Let the space be a story

▲ A public communication space © with ambiguity is natural architectural photography

Not only to meet the needs of living, but also to have a certain sense of spirituality and relaxation, we want the space to have a narrative. Through scenes and people's activities, stories can occur in the space, amplifying social attributes and communication functions. By creating a space to encourage interaction and communication between people, the space is more than just a space for accommodation and vacation. The tea room, book bar, and restaurant will also be presented in a relatively open and flexible way, making it a "communication living room". It is even possible that we do not have a TV in each room, creating a movie-watching atmosphere in the public space, and in this way guiding people out of the solitude and into the public space.

▲ Terrace space © is natural architectural photography

Swimming pools, BBQs, terraces, and watchtowers are just some of the ways to encourage diverse socialising.

But we still want to create spaces where we can be alone and in communion with other people. In addition to maintaining the relative independence and privacy of each room, in the design of the greenhouse flower room on the roof, it is shaped into a relatively quiet and independent roof flower house secret place. So in some social public spaces, let it grow both inward and upward.

Let light and shadow and space be intertwined into poetry

▲ full of poetic light and shadow, feel the change © of time is natural architectural photography

Light is a medium for carving architectural space, and the interaction of light and shadow will produce a certain specific effect visually. To some extent, light is also a changing building material. In our architectural practice, we also pay special attention to the guidance and shaping of light in architecture, hoping that the space can be enriched and full of poetry through the injection of light and shadow, so that the space can have emotion, artistic conception and interest. It is also hoped that people can perceive time and space through the changes of light and shadow in space.

In order to ensure the light in the interior, the courtyard and the courtyard remain the core of our overall design, and the courtyard and courtyard are separated from the building masses to ensure sufficient natural light. Light is introduced through glass brick walls, skylights on the roof, and grilles of different shapes to create different spatial moods. Through the change and movement of light and shadow, people in this space can feel the time and lead to reverie.
