A short story of the ancient Croatian city of Splitri

I have published three travelogues of the ancient city of Split before, most of which are mainly based on tracing its history, and this travelogue continues to tell the story of Split, but a few small stories that happened to me.

Before I walked into the ancient city of Split, I only had 5 euros in my pocket, and I thought, I didn't buy anything, 5 euros was almost. As a result, when I was about to climb the bell tower of St. Duye Cathedral, a brother grabbed me and spat out a bunch of "mess", directly confusing me, what do you mean? Don't let it go? So I rubbed my thumb and forefinger twice in front of his eyes, and the guy finally smiled and I asked, "Euro?" The dude held out three fingers: "Three! "That's it, 3 euros was spent. Standing at the top of the bell tower of the cathedral, I stayed for a long time, and I wanted to savor the city left by the ancient Roman Empire for more than 1,700 years, without the slightest sense of violation. Walking down the bell tower, is the church courtyard square (Figure 7), which was the nave of Diocletian's Palace in ancient Rome, and today's nave roof has long disappeared, but you can still clearly feel the glory of the royal palace. At the bottom of the bell tower there is a "sculpture of a human-faced sphinx" (fig. 8), which was obtained after the ancient Roman Empire army attacked Egypt.

Turn underneath the "Sculpture of the Sphinx" into an alley where diocletian the Great's mausoleum is located. There were two women at the door who seemed to be guarding the door, and I pointed to myself, and then to the gate of the mausoleum, meaning that I wanted to go in. As a result, the two of them said in unison," no, no! ”。 So, I took out the ticket to the bell tower, and the two of them still "no, no" non-stop, I couldn't hold back, and said a word in passing, "Money? The two eldest sisters instantly giggled. I asked, "Euro?" Answered, "Two!" Two euros are gone, a total of 5 euros in the pocket, all gone. Drilling into the ground, Diocletian's mausoleum, which is almost empty, is an old couple reading the words in front of a statue. I thought, when Diocletian the Great ruled ancient Rome, Christianity was still "demonic religion", and it was also the most cruel period of persecution for Christians, was this statue of the virgin Mary?

There is also a very small square within the ancient city of Split, and on the south side of the square there is a bell tower that is very beautiful in my eyes (figure 13). When I first saw it, I raised my camera, but when I approached the bell tower, I found that there was a strange relief on the building next to the bell tower (Figure 15), so I pulled out my mobile phone and called the tour guide urgently, and after 5 minutes, the little tour guide ran over breathlessly. He told me that the relief figure was the earliest archbishop in the ancient city of Split, and because he was short, only 1 meter 45 tall, he could walk on tiptoe under the cover of his robe and remain undetected. Not much is remembered about the archbishop's merits, but his tiptoeing is widely circulated to this day.

Speaking of the bell tower, I think I'll just write a few more words! Why do Western churches usually have a wall clock on top of their bell towers? In fact, its main function is to help the poor grasp the time. In ancient times, except for the nobility, the vast majority of people did not have watches, and the church in the center of the city would generally hang a large bell. But after the expansion of the city, it was difficult for ordinary people living farther from the center of the city to see the time, so a large bell hung on the bell towers of all churches slowly rose.

When A person was wandering around the ancient city, he also found the place of Figure 16, because he could not speak, and the tour guide and other companions were not around, but I was a particularly curious person, so I walked into the building and walked around. During the reign of Diocletian the Great, the Roman Empire was still a polytheistic kingdom, and Diocletian most revered the god Jupiter, and this building is the Jupiter Temple preserved more than 1,700 years ago.

Can you read something out of the little story recorded above? This trip to the Balkans, I am with a group of friends, to put it bluntly, it is "with the group tour", according to common sense, the travel route is "prescribed action". But can I travel to Croatia for the second time? The chance of walking into the ancient city of Split again is almost zero, what to do? My guideline is to make the most of all your time. In the books, I have read the history of Europe, the most perfect place in the world to record history, and of course europe, where there are physical records, cities, villages, universities, churches, castles, palaces, architecture, sculptures, paintings, music, etc., almost completely record everything that has been.

In 44 european countries, a vast sea of historical sites, it is lucky to see them once, and it is difficult to see them again a second time. Looking at the world, among the 42 developed and quasi-developed countries in the world, except for 4 in Asia, 2 in North America, and 2 in Oceania, the rest are all concentrated in Europe. Why did Europe rise first in the world? Why has it always stood up after its rise? Why do all 8 developed countries outside Europe inherit European culture? To understand these questions, do you need to look for answers in history? Reading is not enough, you must go into Europe, you must see with your own eyes, you must think with your own head, and what words should be used to describe a person who listens to a voice and thinks it is the truth?

I always feel that traveling to Europe, really need to read a little history, but also need to personally verify those history, if you do not have a minimum understanding of the destination you visit, even if you listen to the tour guide's explanation, it is absolutely in the clouds, if you use the language that everyone can understand, it is "Zhang'er monk can't feel his head!" "Even if you read the humanistic history of the city you have visited, many times you need to go home and re-read some to slowly become clear." Europe, that's a place worth chewing on over and over again.
