For those children who have achieved independent reading, there is no pressure to add hundreds of words. But for children who can't read or understand, it is undoubtedly worse.
Today, the grain teacher came to share a dry article, I will take my family's "Buddhist baby" as an example to share how to move from a zero starting point to independent reading.

The family has "Buddhist Puwa"
First of all, let's introduce my family baby, Buddhist Puwa, who is more disciplined in school, not too wrong, and not too much speech, which belongs to small transparency.

"Laziness" is human nature, and many children are like this.

My daughter was introduced to English at the age of four, and began to read independently in the second grade, and now she can read the original chapter book, usually without brushing the questions, without memorizing words, and turning out the STAR of the year test, Lens 935L.
The right approach allows children to learn painlessly, even happily.
Choosing the right book is important
Happiness needs to start from interest!
And interest is not necessarily innate, but can also be cultivated. Reading is the most important interest to cultivate.
Everyone knows that reading is important, but choosing books is more important. Choose the right book, do more with less, choose the wrong one, you can only fall to ashes.
I generally consider the following three points in the selection of books:
First, in line with the child's level. Don't blindly pursue the classics, classic picture books that many children can't read, because it's too difficult. It is more helpful to first understand your child's language level and find the right graded reading material.
Second, take care of your child's interests. My daughter liked fairy tales when she was a child, and I tried to add some popular science books to her, but she was generally interested in categories like "National Geographic", and later used popular science novels as an introduction, and then began to read popular science texts.
Third, conform to the child's mental development. The characteristics of children at each stage are different, sometimes full of curiosity, sometimes irritable, can be read with the corresponding books. When my daughter was 7 years old, she was suddenly afraid of the dark, afraid of ghosts, and felt rejected for Halloween, so I bought a set of "Winnie the Witch" series, funny characters and plots that made children "afraid" of it.

The six stages of reading ability

Harvard Professor Jeanne Chall has a well-known six-stage discussion on the development of reading skills, which I have compiled into Chinese and English versions for your reference.
From my daughter's reading development, I have observed that the path of children's Chinese and English reading is the same, even the same.
Phase I
Pre-reading read preparation
The preparation for reading is not to read, but to "listen."
Children need a lot of sources of hearing input. Children in mother-speaking countries rely on the support of their parents' reading companions and language environments.
But English is not our mother tongue, we picked up the English version of "Guess How Much I Love You", it doesn't matter if you can't read it yourself, you are afraid to bring the child to the ditch.

And our most important thing is to accompany, guide, remind, translate, communicate next to each other, so that children can slowly cultivate interest and enjoy the fun of reading with their parents while entering a lot of input.
Phase II
Initial Reading Beginner Reading
The primary reading stage requires the joint efforts of the school and the family, and some basic reading skills will be learned in the school, such as natural phonics, but a lot of reading also needs to be supported by the family.
1. Nursery rhymes
Nursery rhymes are the most suitable language books for children, catchy and full of fun, and can be slipped along with reading a few times, which is the first choice for cultivating a sense of language.
Many kindergarten and elementary school teachers also teach children. "Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes" is very popular with children, and it is not annoying to listen to it over and over again, and it can also cultivate the habit of children reading nursery rhymes.
Those familiar children's songs can also be arranged, directly search for "English children's songs" or "early education English children's songs" on the Internet, you can find a lot of audio lyrics, as well as children's song animation.
2. Natural Phonics
Natural Phonics has been written into the curriculum, which can help children see words and spell.
The most basic is the 26-letter letter name (Letter Name) and the letter sound (Letter sound), many schools only teach the letter name, children do not know the letter sound.
An alphabet song by Uncle Jack Hartmann can quickly help children develop an understanding of alphabet sounds.
I have used The World Phonics, Smart Phonics, which is more suitable for teachers.
If parents want to enter, it is recommended to match their website and APP learning, in addition, it is difficult to learn natural phonics in one breath, it is best to carry out in segments, with more reading to really have an effect.
3. Graded readings
Graded readings are the most I've bought.
The classic Oxford tree is like a children's series, children love the characters and stories in it, and children with a little vocabulary can start reading from level 1.
My daughter benefited the most from graded reading was RAZ (Kids A-Z), we only had apps at that time, and she read from aa to L in about two years.
Later I also bought the Red Rocket.
These graded books either have an app or a bit of a pen, which is really worry-free.
But after my daughter reached L, she slowly lost interest in these specialized graded books, and she became more "picky" about the content.
I am more interested in some of the larger scales, such as Scholastic Reader of Scholastic Publishing House, Danny and dinosaurs in the I Can Read series, cookies, and little monsters.
Phase III
Fluency reads fluently
With the help of natural phonics and graded reading, the daughter began to read some simple picture books and bridge books on her own.
At this time, graded reading continues to persist, but more richer and more interesting series of books have also joined.
Picture book story
In the second grade, I found that she had "retired" back to kindergarten and read the classic picture books we had read together. Because at that time, we read it together, and now she can read it herself.
In addition, she will go to the library to borrow many fairy tale series: Winnie the Witch series, Paddington Bear series, Pete Cat series, Dr. Seuss series, Disney fairy tale series, Frog and Toad series.
There are more words and longer pages. This stage is also the most obvious progress, and children can accumulate vocabulary through independent reading.
Popular science stories
My daughter was not interested in popular science books, and National Geographic flipped through them and put them aside.
But I still like popular science picture books and bridge books with strong storytelling. The Wonderful World of Simon Abbot series of pictures is more vivid, "The Fly Boy" is a strong story, so children are very easy to understand.
In addition, the classic "Magic School Bus" and "Magic TreeHouse" also helped a lot. The small encyclopedia series launched by "Magic TreeHouse" is more informative and is also recommended to children who like popular science and history and humanities.

Stage IV
Read to Learn Read learning
By the third grade, my daughter was basically able to read on her own. That is, the Leadn to Read is completed and the Read to learn phase is entered.
She can read chapter books and really enjoy the fun and knowledge that reading brings.
Children's chapter novel
My main function is to buy some books that she is interested in. For example: Detective Nate, Peter Rabbit series, Roald Dahl series, Mouse Reporter, her favorite is the funny My Weirder School.
By the fourth and fifth grades, I read Wonder's Wonder Boy series, The David Walliams series, and Harry Potter.
Popular science books for children
This stage is the stage of acquiring knowledge through reading. That is, what you read is what you learn.
Therefore, the content of popular science books needs to be more involved. You can ask the subject teacher for advice, and the teacher will give some recommended book list.
The science teacher recommended Horizon Science, the author of this set of books Nick Arnold once came to our school, and after her daughter heard his lectures, she couldn't wait to read this set of books... Sometimes opening a good book also requires some external stimuli.
Extensive reading at this stage can be carried out in large quantities, involving different aspects of knowledge, and effective intensive reading can help children improve their thinking and achieve better understanding to cope with various examination needs.
From the beginning of zero to independent reading, my daughter spent a few years, the process can be shortened, but the stage is insurmountable.
