The joy of benevolence and wisdom, green water and green mountains

Text/Liu Xiaoyang

Landscapes have very important significance and rich connotations in Chinese culture. Confucius advocated the realization of life ideals and political ambitions with personality norms such as "benevolence, righteousness, etiquette, wisdom, and faith", but did not neglect the observation and understanding of natural landscapes, and he put forward the viewpoint of "wise people enjoy water, benevolent people enjoy mountains" in the "Analects of Yongye", giving landscapes the meaning of personality spirit and moral comparison. Water is the source of life, it can be all things, clean and dirty, not to turn back, flat and positive, it is ever-changing, can be rivers, lakes and seas, streams and springs and waterfalls, rain, snow and frost, unpredictable form, so Confucius issued a "wise man is happy with water" sigh. The Taoists who advocated nature also had a fondness for water, and Lao Tzu put forward the philosophical concept of "Tao", but "Tao can be Tao, very Tao", it is "only trance", "lonely and liao", it is difficult to express, so Lao Tzu used water metaphors: "Good is like water, water is good for all things without dispute, and the evil of the people is the same, so it is more than the Tao" (Tao Te Ching, Chapter 8). The weakness of the water nature, inaction, indisputableness, and handling are close to the spiritual connotation of the "Tao" that it advocates. Confucianism and Taoism can be said to be leading the way in their knowledge and understanding of water.

Compared with the softness, movement and fickleness of water, mountains are rigid, static and constant. Human beings' worship and reverence for the mountain began in ancient times, and there is a sentence in the Book of Poetry, Xiaoya Chezhi, "The mountain is up, the scenery is stopped", and the mountain is used as a metaphor for the nobility of morality. The reason why the mountain is concerned is also because the mountain is positioned in the moral sense of "benevolence": "Grass and trees are born, all things stand up, birds gather, animals rest, treasures are cultivated, Qifu rests, breeding herds without tiredness, and the four sides are taken without limitation." It is precisely because the mountain grows grass and trees, nourishes living beings, contains rich treasures, dedicates endless resources, and conforms to the mentality and spiritual characteristics of the benevolent, which is why "the benevolent so Leshan also".

The word "shanshui", on the one hand, refers to the dual concept of mountain and water, which contains many factors of the unity of opposites: it moves and is static, soft and rigid, one changing and one constant, which is the so-called one yin and one yang, which is also the basic category of Chinese philosophy. In addition, the joint name of shanshui is an inseparable noun, which is the dividing line of the country, region, race and culture, and is also another name for the land or region, which has the significance of natural ecological environment. As early as 2005, General Secretary Xi Jinping put forward the scientific thesis that "green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains", which contains the dialectical relationship between economic development and ecological protection. In order to achieve harmonious coexistence between man and nature, we must establish and practice the concept that green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains, and adhere to the basic national policy of saving resources and protecting the environment. With the continuous deepening and improvement of people's understanding of the concept that green water and green mountains are golden mountains and silver mountains, promoting win-win economic development and environmental protection, and building a home for the earth where economy and environment work together, it has become our consensus, and the ancient concept of "landscape" has been endowed with new vitality.
