Affected by the shortage of chips, rising raw material prices, the turmoil in Russia and Ukraine and other unfavorable factors, the global automotive industry continued to be weak in February, LMC data showed that global light vehicle sales showed negative growth for the eighth consecutive month, but the new energy passenger car market continued to rise.
According to relevant statistics, global sales of new energy passenger cars increased by 99% year-on-year to 541,780 units in February, almost double the same period last year, and the proportion of the global automotive market continued to remain high at 9.3%.
Continuous high-speed growth has led to the total sales of new energy passenger cars in the first two months of this year reached 1,146,059 units, an increase of more than 90% year-on-year. And this performance has exceeded the 1.128 million units in the first quarter of last year. Therefore, both the sales volume and the increase fully reflect the rapid development of this segment and the huge potential it has. In this rapidly developing field, the most important to ignore at present is Tesla and BYD.

The BYD Legion is menacing
From the model list, Tesla's models have been firmly occupying the single-month championship since November last year, especially the Model Y has been at the top of the list for two consecutive months.
And with the official commissioning of Tesla's Berlin Gigafactory on March 22, the Model Y will continue to expand the gap between it and the second place in the future, and perhaps soon it will become the first model in the global new energy market to exceed 100,000 units in a single month. If nothing else, the model titles in March and the first quarter were won by the Model Y.
As for wuling hongguang MINIEV, after more than a year of scenery, it seems to have begun to flatten, and in February it has been squeezed to third by Tesla Brothers, and because its total sales in the first two months were only more than 7,000 vehicles more than the Model 3, the ranking in the first quarter is likely to be reversed with the latter.
Immediately following the top three is the menacing BYD Legion. In February's list, six BYD models made the list, five of which were in the top 10.
It is worth noting that in February, the Legion was no longer led by BYD Qin Plus PHEV, but song Pro/Plus PHEV, with a record high of 19,061 units, nearly 5,000 ahead of the former. And even with the addition of their respective EV versions, Song Pro/Plus surpassed Qin Plus's 22,507 units with 22,772 units, becoming BYD's boss Hua Dan. Not only that, the total sales of Song Pro/Plus PHEV in the first two months of this year were also slightly higher than that of Qin Plus PHEV, becoming the fourth in the cumulative list.
Like many of its peers, Song Pro/Plus PHEV can achieve such results, mainly due to the strong technical support of DM-i super hybrid and blade batteries, as well as BYD's strong cost control capabilities to make the products have super cost-effective, which has been favored by the majority of consumers.
In fact, not only the Song Pro/Plus PHEV, but also another BYD model, the Don PHEV, also set a new record of 10,032 vehicles. With this excellent performance, Tang PHEV broke into the top ten list of a single month for the first time, and thus surpassed the previous far leading Han EV and Dolphin. At the same time, the total sales of 18,885 vehicles also allowed Tang PHEV to enter the top ten of the cumulative list in the first two months.
Of course, in addition to Tesla and BYD's products, there are many models in the model list that deserve attention.
For example, the Hyundai Ioiq 5 achieved a best of 9,284 vehicles to break the coherent formation of the BYD legion; after joining Veranda, the Toyota RAV4/Wildlander PHEV was once again on the list. At the same time, these two have become one of the few foreign models to return to the cumulative list again.
In addition, the Kia EV6, a sibling model that was also born on hyundai Group's E-GMP platform, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, also appeared on the list for the first time. Ford Mustang Mach-E has once again entered the single-month best-seller list, with the rapid development of the new energy market in the United States, perhaps the car will become a regular in the future.

After two years, Geely is on the list again
Judging from the brand's single-month list, BYD continued to win the championship with an advantage of more than 9,000 vehicles. Although BYD's sales decreased by 5,357 units in February compared to January, China's new energy market fell by 21.7% month-on-month in February, taking into account the impact of the Spring Festival, and the slight decrease in the former was basically negligible.
Originally, according to BYD's super trend, its sales in March will most likely exceed the 100,000 mark, even if it cannot compete with Tesla, it can also set a new record - for the first time in the global new energy market, two brands exceeded six figures in a single month.
However, due to the multi-point outbreak of the epidemic in China, especially the epidemic prevention measures taken by Shenzhen, Shanghai and other cities have greatly affected the production and transaction volume of enterprises in the terminal market, this situation may not occur in March. In fact, not only BYD is affected by unexpected factors, Tesla's trading volume in March may also be damaged by the chain reaction caused by the domestic epidemic and even the Situation in Russia and Ukraine.
Back to the February list, like BYD, the sales of independent brands have also declined, and some rankings have changed greatly, SAIC has slipped from the 6th in January to the 10th, almost being squeezed out of the top ten; Chery has fallen from 8th to 13th, and GAC has directly fallen from 10th to 17th.
For example, with the help of the Ioniq 5 and EV6 models, Hyundai and Kia once again ranked in the top ten of the brand, Audi also rose 3 places to 11th, Peugeot advanced from the end of the list in January to 16th, and after five months, Ford also re-entered the list with the help of Musicang Mach-E, and Toyota appeared again.
In fact, February is not only the above foreign brands shining, there is also good news in the independent camp, Dongfeng's ranking has risen to 12th, and Geely, which has been separated for nearly two years, has also been on the list again, the last time was January 2020.
In 2019 and before, Geely was also a frequent visitor in the list of global new energy brands, but with the decline in sales of blockbuster models Emgrand EV, Geely's new energy sales also decreased rapidly. This time, Geely's return should rely on the joint efforts of many models of Geely, Geometry and Extreme Krypton.
In fact, Geely not only appeared in the single-month list again, but also appeared at the 16th place in the cumulative list with 22,326 vehicles, surpassing ideals, great walls, Peugeot and Xiaopeng in one fell swoop. Perhaps, this is just the beginning of Geely's emergence in the global new energy market, and its sales will continue to climb in the future, and the ranking will continue to move forward.
Whether it is BYD or Geely, it is just the epitome of independent brands' fierce attack on the new energy track, and the Chinese car companies represented by them are trying to seize more resources on this track.
