On March 22, according to Taiwan media reports, the domestic DRAM chip manufacturer Hefei Changxin Storage will trial production of DDR5 memory chips with 17nm process in the second quarter of this year, and seek to expand production capacity.

According to the report, at present, the yield of Hefei Changxin's 17nm process DDR5 memory chip has reached 40%, and it is expected to be trial production in the second quarter of this year, and samples will be given to customers. Although the current yield of 40% is low, Changxin Storage will continue to improve the yield in the next period of time.

According to the roadmap previously announced by Changxin Storage, Changxin Storage is currently planning to launch 17nm DDR5/LPDDR5, and will also launch 10nm process products in the future.

In addition, in terms of production capacity, Changxin Storage has previously achieved production capacity targets of 45,000 wafers per month and 60,000 wafers per month in 2020 and 60,000 wafers per month in 2020 and 2021, respectively. The production capacity target for 2022 is 120,000 wafers/month, and the future production capacity target is 300,000 wafers/month.

According to TrendForce forecast, by the end of 2021, the global memory capacity will reach 1.5 million wafers/month, Samsung has a production capacity of more than 555,000 wafers/month, SK Hynix is 360,000 wafers/month, and Micron also has 355,000 wafers/month. Obviously, at present, there is still a very large gap between Changxin's storage capacity of DRAM chips and the first-line large manufacturers.

In addition, at the technical level, Samsung has mass-produced 14nm EUV process LPDDR5 memory, Changxin Storage's 17nm process DDR5/LPDDR5 memory chip and its one or two generations of technology gap, but this is not a big problem, the main goal of domestic memory is still to improve yield, accelerate production capacity.
