On February 22, the Shanghai Library (Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology Information) held a press conference at the East Building to release the new logo and the list of invited artists. The interior space of the East Pavilion was also unveiled, showing its appearance to the guests in a more complete way.

The East Pavilion is one of the major projects for the construction of cultural facilities in Shanghai in the "13th Five-Year Plan", located at No. 300 Yingchun Road, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, adjacent to Century Park in the east, and the main building of the venue is located on a quadrilateral plot surrounded by Yingchun Road, Hehuan Road, Jinxiu Road and Century Avenue.

The Huamu City Sub-Center, where the East Pavilion is located in the above picture, is the focus of the construction of large-scale public venues in Shanghai in recent years. Centered on Century Square and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station of Rail Transit Line 2, there is Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in the south, Pudong New Area Government in the north, Shanghai Oriental Art Center in the northwest corner, Shanghai Library East Hall in the east, and Shanghai Museum East Museum under construction in the southwest corner.

The gathering of public venues has further made the area a future public vitality area and cultural exchange center in Shanghai, and its popularity will be even stronger in the future. According to the reporter's actual measurements, out of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station No. 3 exit, only need to walk 200 meters to reach the south gate of the East Pavilion above, and it is very convenient for citizens and readers to visit the museum.

New construction, new positioning

The East Building is the largest library in China with a total construction area of 115,000 square meters, designed by SHL Architects in Denmark. Construction began on September 27, 2017, and the structure was topped out on September 20, 2019. The space in the museum includes 7 floors above ground and 2 floors underground, which can provide nearly 6,000 seats after opening, and each functional area can meet the needs of holding more than 200 lectures and thousands of various academic activities every year. The annual number of readers can reach 4 million.

The reporter saw in the museum that the interior decoration of the East Pavilion in the above picture was basically completed, and the museum was debugging and correcting various professional equipment, service facilities and guidance signs. Some of the books have been neatly stacked on the shelves.

Each floor of the East Building has a high ceiling, with a wide view and sufficient light, and the urban forest outside the museum can be seen through the glass wall. There is a split-level design between the floors, and on the basis of providing a large number of book displays and self-study tables, the moving line has a certain interest, and the space in the museum can be "visited" and "filmed". Combined with the different functions of the reading space, a number of public art installations are also set up in the museum to enhance the interactivity.

Readers' commonly used functions such as self-service card handling, book borrowing, reference borrowing, and book electronic code query will continue to be provided, and the application of self-service machines and robots will further improve the automation level of various services.

On the first floor of the museum, there is also a children's reading area with large space and an open atrium activity area, which will provide a parent-child reading experience. The basement will also have a readers' restaurant like the Shanghai Library Main Library. On the basement floor, there are also activity venues such as the Red Hall, the Yellow Hall, the Blue Hall, the Green Hall and a theater.

Public, artistic

At the beginning of this year, the East Pavilion has held a number of public beta activities, recruiting readers to participate in the use of tables and chairs in public areas, "Music Listening and Enjoying" music audition activities, etc., to accept readers' feedback on software and hardware services.

It is understood that after the opening of the east hall in the above picture, a new division of labor will be carried out with the main hall on Huaihai West Road. The East Pavilion will focus on providing diversified, themed and experiential services for the public, and build a new generation of reading and cultural exchange centers. The library will be gradually transformed and adjusted, further strengthening the professional, knowledge-based and research-oriented services for institutions and readers, and transforming it into an academic exchange center for professional research.

In order to welcome the opening of the East Library, Shanghai Library invited designer Chen Youjian with international influence to design a new LOGO, and the whole set of visual recognition system was completed by Shen Haopeng, a famous designer in Shanghai. The new LOGO inherits the triangular shape of the original museum logo, and presents the main visual pattern shaped like a sail with a more concise and flat design, which is intended to express the expedition to the "era of great reading".

Chen Chao, director of Shanghai Library, said that Shanghai Library will be committed to connecting every information island, connecting people, space, media, content and knowledge.

To enhance the interactivity and attractiveness of the space, Shanghai Library invited UAP, a world-renowned art company, to plan, design and produce public artworks. Based on the context of the ever-evolving text carrier in Chinese culture, the UAP planning team invited artists to use their respective visual languages to create on the basis of fully analyzing the internal space of the East Pavilion in the above picture, and created 10 field customized works. Invited artists include Emily Floyd, Gu Wenda, Liu Wenxuan, Ma Xingwen, Ni Youyu, Shen Fan, Plummer & Smith, Xu Bing, Yang Zhenzhong, Zheng Zhengbin and other ten (group).

Artist Shen Fan's work "Back and Forth Spring and Autumn" is a holistic visual installation paved on the ground of the atrium on the first floor of the East Pavilion, using old newspapers as the prototype for creation, concealing the text, preserving and highlighting punctuation marks, and expressing the formal beauty of the paragraph structure. The prototype of the old book and newspaper comes from the newspaper layout created by the Shanghai Library and the important collection of ancient books of the Shanghai Library.
