Guo Shifu, formerly known as Guo Lianzhong, is a famous contemporary freehand flower and bird painter, calligrapher and seal engraver in mainland China. He is one of the founders of the Modern Chinese Ink Painting Alliance. He is currently a first-class painter of the Beijing Academy of Painting, a member of the Art Committee of the Beijing Academy of Painting, the director of the First Creative Studio, a member of the China Artists Association, the deputy secretary-general of the Beijing Flower and Bird Painting Research Association, and an honorary director of the Museum of Modern China in Japan.
Born in Beijing in 1945, Guo Shifu, whose ancestral home is Tianjin, transferred from a church school to Mishi Hutong Central Primary School until he was 8 years old and began to learn painting with his grandmother Cai Xinbing. In 1958, he joined the Beijing Xinxing Peking Opera Troupe, playing the role of "black head", now also known as Gonghua Face, and later transferred to Xinjiang with the Peking Opera Troupe, and performed a performance to comfort the People's Liberation Army in Yecheng on the border between China and India. During the performance, he created many sketches about northern and southern Xinjiang.
Because he wanted to learn painting systematically, he resigned from the Peking Opera Troupe and returned to Beijing to study painting in the Forbidden City Painting Museum. After a year of study, he was assigned by the Cultural Affairs Bureau to work on sets for the Wu Suqiu Peking Opera Troupe (later renamed Yanjing Peking Opera Troupe), and the first set he made was "ShaJiabang", and after the troupe was disbanded, he entered the Beijing Municipal People's Machinery Factory as a worker.
In 1970, he was convicted of discussing and Jiang Qing arbitrarily changing the name of the Peking Opera actor, and was criticized for Wang Wei's poems. After such a tortuous experience, he changed his original name to Guo Shifu, also known as "Stubborn Stone". After this, he and other painters established the "Hundred Flowers Painting Society" in Beijing, and immediately after its establishment, the first Hundred Flowers Painting Exhibition was held at the Cultural Palace. After the exhibition was perfectly exhibited, he established the "Beijing Flower and Bird Research Association" with Zhang Lichen, Wang Peidong, Mr. Cui Zifan and others.
After his achievements, Guo Shifu has held dozens of painting exhibitions of various sizes, including personal public welfare painting exhibitions for the blind and deaf and mute, the "Group Exhibition of Chinese Paintings of the Five Painting Academies" during the Asian Games, the touring exhibitions in the United States, Southeast Asia, and San Francisco, the "Green Wind - Heart for the Olympic Games, Caring for the Homeland" painting exhibition that helped the "Olympic Bid", and the "Master's Gate" exhibition commemorating the 111th anniversary of Chairman Mao Zedong's birth.
As the inheritor of the Beijing School of Painting, it is not only the techniques of the Beijing School that are inherited, but also the "refining of ancient methods and absorbing new knowledge". He often creates Meilan bamboo chrysanthemums and lotus wisteria, and in his works there is a kind of elegant and upright, majestic and not stained habits, free and with a strong quality posture. In his paintings, he advocates taking straight and straight, writing shapes with intentions, and focusing on the processing of the overall line structure of the picture and the grasp of the relationship between opening and closing. His lines are thick, raw, and penetrating the back of the paper, and are written entirely in the middle of the calligraphy with the pen. When he painted, he mainly embodied "big", and this big expression was "the great realm, the spirit of pen and ink, and natural carving".
