The "can't stop" controversy will disappear The new car is forced to install a black box: real-time recording of driving data

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the "Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation", which requires that from January 1, 2022, newly produced passenger cars should be equipped with a "car black box" EDR system, that is, a driving event recorder. Driving recorders are not unfamiliar to everyone, but what is a driving event recorder?

In simple terms, it is like an aircraft's essential "black box", which is used to record the key operating data of the car in the three stages before, during and after the collision (including speed, ABS status, seat belt status, etc.).

Cao Guangping, an independent researcher of new energy vehicles, introduced: In the accident, the driver's behavior of stepping on the brake pedal, EDR will save the brake signal from how many milliamperes to how many milliamperes, including deceleration, finally stop, the whole process will be recorded.

In addition to recording the driver's handling data, the EDR also records the vehicle's status, such as vehicle speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, steering wheel angle, brake throttle status, and so on. In particular, when an accident occurs in a vehicle with a driving assistance function, EDR can distinguish whether it is the vehicle's system failure or human operation error, which helps to determine the responsibility for the accident.

So why do you have to force an EDR installation?

With the large-scale popularization of new energy vehicles, especially electric vehicles, in recent years, there have been many "Rashomon" incidents, such as Tesla female drivers standing on the roof to defend their rights, in addition to many Tesla owners who said that they encountered "brake failure", but due to the lack of evidence, such cases are often very difficult to handle, and with the data support of EDR equipment, the specific cause of the accident can be easily determined.

In fact, EDR equipment is not only mandatory to install in China, 99% of new cars listed in the United States will be equipped, while the proportion of new car assembly in mainland China is about 10%, and only BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Weilai and BYD are equipped with EDR.

The average cost of EDR is about 1,000 yuan, and with large-scale mass production, it is expected to be reduced to 300-500 yuan, and this part of the cost will be borne by the manufacturers themselves.
