In the late Qing Dynasty, there was such a literati: he did not live in his life, but he was a guest of the prince's ministers; since childhood, his family was well-off, but he was penniless and could enjoy himself with food and drink.
Today, he does not seem to be so famous, not as well-known as Nalan Rongruo and Cao Xueqin; but at that time, he was the object of pursuit by booksellers, and his compilation of the "Baixiang Dictionary" was hailed as "the first book of introductory words".
He went to Lushan for 100 days, admiring the white clouds and clear springs, listening to the sound of tigers and insects, sometimes lecturing to monks about Buddhism, and sometimes talking to students about Western religion and population issues (Zhou Shao once praised: "The Chinese literati of the 18th century could reach social and demographic issues... It's a miracle. He lamented that the tourists were delighted by the warm hospitality of the monks, but he did not know that he would have to face the Book of Fortune next; but when he heard that an old monk who had entertained him was ill, he poured out his help and did not hesitate. After visiting Lushan Tianchi, he wrote a "Tianchi Fu", and then wrote down in his diary with a smile: "There are a few more tourists... The literati also read the Tianchi Fu for a long time at the Four Immortals Shrine and praised: "So long! ’”

This person is Shu Menglan, the word is white. The book is called "Diary of a Mountain Tour", and as soon as it was written, it was snatched up and printed several editions by Qing Dynasty booksellers. During the Republic of China, Zhou Zuoren found a version in the old bookstore, was greatly pleased, and recommended it to Lin Yutang; Lin Yutang pulled Zhou Shao to point the school, recommended it to the Cosmic Wind Society for publication, and also wrote a special article "Reading Method of the Diary of a Mountain Tour", which was recommended as a "diary model". Zhou Zuo artificially wrote a preface, saying:
Bai Xiang's articles are beautiful and thoughtful, which are rare among the literati, and Le Lian Bao said that his Hui Confucian interpretation is in the inch heart, and the poor heavenly people are in the ruler, although there is a slight algae decoration, but it can also be said to be a knowing word.
Lin Yutang's "Reading Law" is more specific, praising the "Ode to the Mediocre People" in the book, "The first masterpiece of This ancient and modern scolding Of Taoism is comparable to Yuan Zicai's "Reply to Yang Kasahu Book", which can really be described as a matter of laughter and anger", and also commented on the article "Talking about the Prosperity and Decline of the National Pulse with Cold Heat" "The so-called so-called witty words are explained", and the article "With the Four Seasons of Metaphor for the Sages" is "rare and metaphorical, the text is lively, and it is my so-called good article.".
Later, Mu Xin saw this book and loved the freshness and tranquility in it, so he wrote a poem called "Notes on the White Fragrance Day". Poetry Cloud:

Almost all the sentences in the poem are excerpted from the "Diary of a Mountain Tour", which is selected and rearranged with the eyes of the poet, and the quiet and dusty life in the "Diary" is concentrated.

Time flies, and for a long time afterwards, the book was not reprinted, and it seems to have been somewhat forgotten. Until 2021, zhonghua bookstore simplified horizontal version was published.
This topic was originally planned by Mr. Li Baomin, who was the editor-in-chief of zhonghua bookstore Shanghai company at the time, who found the Jiaqing ten-year engraved "Diary of Youshan" in the Shanghai Library, and invited Professor Yu Shujuan, who had previously ordered and proofread the "White Xiang Dictionary", to sort out and write a complete introduction to Shu Menglan and his book. However, before the work was completed, Teacher Baomin retired and left the Zhonghua Bookstore, so he entrusted the book to me.
Frankly speaking, when I first took over the manuscript, I was only a task given by my predecessors - after all, at a time when the market code is the main assessment indicator, a diary of a Qing Dynasty is really difficult to make people expect too much. But this idea soon changed, for the simple reason: Shu Menglan was so attractive! When reviewing manuscripts, I often can't help but praise those who see through the world and speak to people's hearts, and marvel at the sharp jokes hidden under the gentleness and thickness, and the clear scenery of Lushan Mountain depicted under the pen of raw flowers can often make people forget the rolling red dust, as if they are in the cool world of the mountains. While reviewing, I copied my favorite sentence and tried to give one or two examples as follows:
The rice consequences of heavy rain, the eaves sound like a waterfall. Xu Cha Tianchi, the rain has turbidity, is the cloud from the ground, the endowment is not extremely clear, so the Tianchi is not happy to accept Yes? Corporals called Han and Fan Zhi knights, etc., but they disdained to be in the same company as The Doo, so they took misfortune, not knowing that faith was ultimately poor, and they were ashamed to be friends with Mo. This is what Xiao knows, so only Xiao regrets it.
Ordinary people think that Han Xin and Fan Duo's titles are the same, but they look down on the latter, so they take their own trouble; but they don't know that even if Han Xin does not have the title of marquis for a lifetime, he will not look up to Fan Duo.
Heavy rain all day, yesterday's so-called cool, become cold. ...... Inevitably avoid the heat, avoid the cold, return to the heat, return to the heat, then return to the Heavenly Pond. There are two sides to life? But think deeply also.
It is too cold to enter the mountains, and the world is too hot, but where is there so many good things in life that have the best of both worlds and "live up to the good things"?
Hearing The bell sang and sang, and went to Manjushri Cliff to see the clouds. The Italian side is suitable for shaving people, not straight for this reason to give up the mysterious cloud to return to the same, so the call to shave on the cliff, and the cloud chestnut hair, black and white, fragrant light is one, can be described as with the cloud for vain.
Shu Menglan loves the clouds of Lushan Mountain the most, and repeatedly chants in his diary, sometimes white clouds enter the room, sometimes "drinking clouds" and "cloud drunk", and more is to go to the mountains to see the clouds. And even the haircut is in the clouds, "and the clouds of hair, black and white", it is really enviable!
When I wrote the book, I chose a similar text for each chapter and put it in the table of contents, hoping to let the reader feel the wonderful white incense text as soon as he opened the book. In fact, there are too many wonderful points in the book, everywhere is overlooked, it is too much to pick, the table of contents is just a guide, and it is really beautiful after the entry.
There is an appendix at the back of the book, in addition to the original preface inscription of the Jiaqing inscription, it also includes the preface of the Republic of China version of Zhou Zuoren, Lin Yutang's "Reading Method of Youshan Diary" and Zhou Shao's Trek. Its Chinese characters I deliberately retained the original appearance of the Republic of China version, and there are occasional differences with the main text, the conditions for proofreading and publishing in that year were not as good as now, the mistakes of Doru Yuhai, and the punctuation habits are also similar and similar. This is also the meaning of careful selection and rearrangement today.
"Diary of a Mountain Tour" is not large, and the content is light and readable, so the folio has chosen a standard 32 kai of 130 × 184mm, which is especially small and cute and very easy to carry at the moment when the big 32 open has become a common practice.

The cover is another place to spend time. The American editor designed several sets of programs, the background color is gray, yellow, white, orange, red and green contrast, it seems to be OK, but always feel that something is missing. Finally, I took inspiration from Mr. Ji Xianlin's "Climbing Lushan Mountain", mr. Ji said: "Everywhere I go, it is always green, green, green... Green is the spirit of Lushan, green is the soul of Lushan", he also rewrote Su Dongpo's Lushan poem, the opening sentence was changed to "near thick and far light green". From this, we designed the cover as a deep and light green: dark green, light green, emerald green... The main picture of the cover adopts the "Lushan Baiyun Picture Scroll" by the famous Qing Dynasty painter Wang Yi, and is accompanied by a classical lattice window ledge, just like the scenery of Shu Menglan's repeated chants in "Diary".
In the votes of the past few days, "Diary of a Mountain Tour" was named one of the "Top Ten Most Loved Books by Readers" by Zhonghua Bookstore in 2021. I hope that our efforts can allow more readers to approach this small book with an ordinary name and wonderful content, enjoy the flavor of the mountains with Shu Menglan, and add a sense of peace and coolness to this rolling red dust and hard work.
