At the end of August 1949, Song Xilian came to Chongqing to attend a military conference presided over by Chiang Kai-shek, and after the meeting, Chiang Kai-shek left him behind and asked: "Did you know in advance that Cheng Qian and Chen Mingren defected in Changsha?" ”
Song Xilian was shocked in his heart and quickly explained: "I didn't know in advance, when the incident happened, I immediately checked whether the radio station and Chen Mingren Binggang's radio station were still in contact, and the radio reply was okay for the time being, so I immediately sent a telegram to Chen Mingren to inquire about the real situation; the next day Chen Mingren sent a back telegram stating the reason for his departure, and hoped that I would take concerted action with them, and I refused to call back." I haven't been in touch since. ”
After Chiang Kai-shek listened, his tone suddenly eased up a lot, and he said one after another: "Good! Good! When talking about this, Mao Renfeng, the director of the secrecy bureau, came in and said that there was an important report, and Song Xilian resigned and left.
The next afternoon, Chiang Kai-shek summoned Song Xilian to another meeting, and he asked Song Xilian to report in detail the names, places of origin, ranks, and daily performance of the commanders of the divisions. Song Xilian reported one by one, explaining everyone's personality and command ability.
After listening to the report, Chiang Kai-shek instructed Song Xilian: "You must tell cadres at all levels, especially senior cadres, that everyone must have the conviction of victory. ”
Afterwards, Song Xilian learned that Chiang Kai-shek had summoned all the generals at and above the commander of the division in Chongqing one by one in the past few days to talk and cheered him up, and the commander of the army and division of Song Xilian's department was not in Chongqing, so Chiang Kai-shek specially asked Song Xilian to tell the story.
Chiang Kai-shek frequently summoned the generals, but it did not have much effect, and Luo Guangwen, commander of the 15th Corps, complained to Song Xilian and said: "When the president came this time, we thought that there must be some new news and new methods, but the result is still the same old way, can this be supported for a long time?" ”
A few days later, Qian Dajun informed the generals who came to attend the meeting: "According to the instructions of the president, all the generals can go back if they are fine."
On the afternoon of August 28, Luo Guangwen invited Hu Zongnan, Song Xiqian, He Shaozhou, Liu Bolong, Guo Rugui, Shen Ce, Zhao Xiukun, and more than ten other people to the office of the 15th Corps in Chongqing for a discussion and dinner.
During the discussion, the people exchanged some views on the current situation, and Hu Zongnan advocated that all the people present jointly request that Chiang Kai-shek stay in Chongqing or Chengdu for a long time to supervise the war was unanimously approved, and Guo Rugui and Zhao Xiukun (chief of staff of the 15th Corps) immediately wrote a draft, which was quickly adopted after discussion and revision. The joint letter addressed to Chiang Kai-shek is more than 800 words long and is roughly divided into three paragraphs: the first paragraph explains the military situation after the People's Liberation Army crossed the river; the second paragraph particularly emphasizes the favorable terrain in the southwest region, the abundance of manpower and material resources, and the consolidation and fully benefit of the superior conditions in this area of Sichuan, making it a base for counter-offensive; and the third paragraph is the focus of the full letter, requesting Chiang Kai-shek to stay in Chongqing or Chengdu for guidance nearby.
After the letter was written, everyone signed it and recommended that Hu Zongnan, Song Xilian, Luo Guangwen, He Shaozhou, and Liu Bolong take the letter to see Chiang Kai-shek at 4 p.m. the next day.
After reading the letter, Chiang Kai-shek showed an expression of displeasure, fired a fire at Hu Zongnan and five other people, and then explained the reason why he could not stay, saying: "I founded a college in Taiwan to train cadres, and I personally presided over and guided them. Therefore, I want to live in Taiwan often, not in Sichuan for a long time. In the southwest, as long as everyone works together and can hold out for a period of time, the international situation will certainly change, and at that time, we can cooperate with the forces of the Taiwan side to carry out a counter-offensive in order to win the final victory. ”
After Chiang Kai-shek finished speaking, Hu Zongnan and Song Xilian were still not dead-hearted, and successively said some views, the main meaning of which was that Sichuan was very important, and asked Chiang Kai-shek to stay. Chiang Kai-shek said impatiently: "Well, I will come to Sichuan often in the future, and I hope that you will convey my meaning to the commanders of the armies, divisions, and regiments." ”
Finally, Hu Zongnan proposed that Wang Lingji, chairman of the Kuomintang Sichuan Province, and Deng Xihou, Liu Wenhui, and other Sichuan warlords disagree, and suggested a change, but Chiang Kai-shek interrupted Hu Zongnan's words. Seeing the impatience on Chiang Kai-shek's face, Hu Zongnan had no choice but to reluctantly resign with Song Xilian, Luo Guangwen, He Shaozhou, and Liu Bolong.
On September 2, the day before he flew back to Enshi, Soong Hee-lin went to see Chiang Kai-shek again, and Chiang Kai-shek repeated the same old tune, at that time, Soong Hee-lian was superficially only, but his mentality had changed, and he began to feel that his principal was nothing more than that.
After returning to Enshi, Gu Zhutong, the chief of staff, sent a telegram to Song Xilian, asking him to cooperate with the Hu Zongnan group and the Tang Enbo group to launch a counterattack against the People's Liberation Army at the same time. Song Xilian called a meeting of his subordinates, and everyone agreed that the troops were difficult to supply, morale was low, it was impossible to engage the PLA head-on, and the conditions for counterattack were completely inadequate. In order to deal with Chiang Kai-shek and Gu Zhutong, Song Xilian asked the 15th Army, which belonged to the 14th Corps, to send a regiment of troops to make a tentative attack, and the 122nd Army to send a number of small units to cross the attack to disrupt the attack, and at the same time, Chen Kefei, commander of the 20th Corps, sent two regiments of troops to make a tentative attack from the Badong and Yesanguan areas to the PLA in front of them. In addition to the troops of the above-mentioned regiments, Song Xilian asked the remaining units to actively reorganize and replenish and build fortifications. The harassing troops sent out by Song Xilian did not achieve any results due to the strong counterattack of the Platon Army, but most of them were annihilated.
The counterattack of Tang Enbo and Hu Zongnan was naturally impossible to talk about, and the People's Liberation Army soon eliminated the Kuomintang troops in most parts of Fujian, and approached Xiamen, Fujian's last stronghold on the mainland, and Tang Enbo fled to the coastal islands with the remnants. Hu Zongnan's counterattack was unsuccessful, but the People's Liberation Army broke through the Qinling defensive line and opened the gateway to Hanzhong, and Hu Zongnan's troops continued to shrink towards the northern Sichuan region.
The so-called three-way counterattack of the Song Xilian, Tang Enbo, and Hu Zongnan cliques was quickly crushed by the People's Liberation Army, and as the Kuomintang army was gradually defeated and retreated, the main force of the Kuomintang army in the southwest was about to be completely eliminated.
