The U.S. State Department warns any American living in Ukraine or visiting Ukraine that they should plan to leave Ukraine as soon as possible while preventing a possible Russian invasion of the country through diplomatic channels. But Pentagon spokesman John Kirby told reporters Wednesday that if all fails, some U.S. troops deployed to NATO countries will be ready to help, partially confirming Wall Street Journal reports that units of the 82nd Airborne Division are setting up tents and checkpoints in Poland. "I cannot rule out the fact that these soldiers can be used to some extent with evacuation assistance on the other side of the border, and they will certainly be prepared for this," he said. As of Wednesday, less than half of the 1,700 troops deployed to Poland had arrived, Kirby said, adding that they were chosen because they were responsive and well trained. He reiterated that one of the tasks was "likely preparing for some sort of evacuation aid on the Polish side of the border," adding that he could not confirm the Wall Street Journal report on the establishment of temporary housing for the evacuees. He said there was currently no aggressive military action to evacuate anyone from Ukraine.
