[Omikron variant dominates the outbreak nearly one-third of the Dutch population infected with COVID-19]

The total number of covid-19 cases worldwide exceeded 400 million on Wednesday as the highly contagious Aomi Kerong variant dominated the outbreak, pushing health systems in several countries to the brink of load capacity.

According to the analysis, although the new cases in many countries have begun to level off, there are still more than 2 million cases per day on average.

On February 6, 2021, the total number of COVID-19 infections in the Netherlands exceeded 1 million; on September 23, seven and a half months later, it exceeded 2 million; less than three months later, on December 20, it exceeded 3 million; one month later, on January 25, 2022, it exceeded 4 million; and two full weeks later, on February 8, it exceeded 5 million. The time taken for every 1 million new cases in the Netherlands is decreasing exponentially.

Globally, according to Johns Hopkins University, the Netherlands ranks among the top fifteen countries with the fastest spread of the virus.

Although 1 million new cases are reported almost daily in Europe, some countries are phasing out restrictions as the local outbreak eases.

RiVM reports that the number of positive tests in the Netherlands is at a high level of stabilization. Over the past week, 608 000 new infections have been reported, "just" 14,000 from 594,000 in the previous week.

According to Our World in Data, about 62% of the world's population has been vaccinated against at least one dose of COVID-19, compared with only 11% in low-income countries.
