More than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles shuttle and serve in the Beijing Winter Olympic Venues, how spectacular!
Under the "double carbon" goal, this Winter Olympics will become the first Olympic event to truly achieve carbon neutrality, of which energy-saving and clean energy vehicles account for 84.9% of all vehicles guaranteed during the race, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are even more eye-catching.
According to the data of the Winter Olympic Organizing Committee, more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and more than 30 hydrogen refueling stations will be operated in the winter olympics. Models include hydrogen fuel cell buses, hydrogen fuel cell cars, hydrogen fuel cell special vehicles such as snow wax cars, etc. Among them, the snow wax car is a special support vehicle for snowboarding for skiers, and can be started normally at -34 ° C. Mao Zongqiang, a professor at the Institute of Nuclear energy and New Energy Technology of Tsinghua University and vice chairman of the International Hydrogen Energy Association, told China Automotive News.
More than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles participate in transportation service guarantees. At the Beijing Olympics 14 years ago, that number was 3. At the same time, this also means that the world's largest fuel cell vehicle demonstration operation is being staged at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics may become a "watershed" for hydrogen energy to accelerate in China.
Buses are the main car companies competing to show off their "hydrogen" strength
As a subdivision track for new energy vehicles, the preferred scenario for the application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is the commercial field. It is understood that the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles serving the Winter Olympics take buses as the main model, a total of 816 buses, and the brands cover Futian, Yutong, Zhongtong, Geely, etc., which can be said to be a comprehensive display of the "hydrogen" strength of car companies.
Liu Jihong, vice president of R&D of Foton Automobile Ouhui Bus Division and president of the Technology Research Institute, told China Automotive News that Ouhui Bus provided 515 hydrogen fuel buses (260 in Beijing Yanqing Division, 35 in Beijing, and 220 in Zhangjiakou Division) for the Winter Olympics, accounting for 63% of the overall hydrogen fuel bus support models, including 40 restructured welfare vehicles to serve passengers with limited mobility. It also set a record for the largest and largest number of models ever recorded in the history of hydrogen bus service international-level sporting events.
According to the long-distance car, a total of 80 Geely interstellar hydrogen fuel cell city bus C12Fs provide event services in Zhangjiakou Chongli Division. To this end, Geely Interstellar has supported a full-time support team composed of R&D engineers, service engineers, supplier engineers, etc., and at the same time provides sufficient reserves of commonly used parts, wearing parts and self-made parts to ensure the smooth progress of vehicle operation and service work.
As a global partner of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and also an early car company to lay out and take the lead in mass production of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Toyota provided 107 Costa hydrogen engine minibuses for the Winter Olympics. It is reported that the Costa hydrogen engine is specially developed for the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, developed by Toyota's R&D center in China, and produced in Sichuan FAW Toyota.
Toyota also supplied 140 second-generation MIRAI hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which are the main brand of hydrogen fuel cell car models put into operation at the Winter Olympics. This is also the first time that the second-generation MIRAI has been put into large-scale use in China.
It is worth mentioning that among the 515 hydrogen fuel buses of Ouhui Bus, a total of 212 are equipped with Toyota hydrogen fuel cell systems, which is also the result of the tripartite cooperation between Toyota, BAIC Group and Yihuatong.
Among the more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel cell event support vehicles, there are also logistics vehicles, special vehicles and other models. For example, Zhilan Automobile specially customized 4.5T hydrogen fuel cell light truck logistics vehicle for the Winter Olympics, and China National Heavy Duty Truck, the first Yellow River hydrogen fuel cell snow wax truck with completely independent intellectual property rights, etc.
Challenges: Hydrogenation, operation, maintenance, deployment, epidemic prevention
During the Beijing Winter Olympics, according to the plan, the Beijing competition area is located in the plain, mainly using pure electric and natural gas vehicles; Yanqing and Zhangjiakou competition areas are mainly hydrogen energy vehicles, mainly to meet the needs of mountainous areas.
The relevant person in charge of Yutong Bus said that the main challenge of the large-scale "participation" of hydrogen fuel vehicles in the Winter Olympics came from the guarantee of the stability of vehicle operation.
He further introduced that the vehicle service guarantee task of the world-class event such as the Winter Olympics is usually extremely arduous, and the hydrogen fuel bus can be said to be a "novice" in the service guarantee of this time. On the one hand, the low temperature around the Winter Olympics area adds difficulties to the stability of vehicle operation, and how to ensure that the performance of the vehicle in the low temperature environment is still stable and reliable is a challenge for the service guarantee team. On the other hand, the operation of hydrogen fuel buses has high requirements for hydrogen reactors, hydrogen refueling stations, vehicle accessories and other related supporting facilities, and it is necessary to make adequate preparations.
Mao Zongqiang said that in comparison, the cold and low temperature in Zhangjiakou is a major test for lithium battery vehicles, but it is "not the same thing at all" for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that can be started normally at minus 30-40 degrees. The main challenge of hydrogen fuel vehicles in this large-scale service to the Winter Olympics is "the world's unprecedented large-scale hydrogen fuel cell vehicle organization and unprecedented epidemic prevention and control". This challenge includes not only the hydrogenation, operation, deployment and maintenance of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, but also the epidemic prevention work of vehicles, operation and maintenance personnel and passengers.
More than 30 hydrogen refueling stations ensure safe supply
In order to ensure the safe and stable supply of hydrogen energy, there are more than 30 hydrogen refueling stations in the demonstration operation of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Since 2021, hydrogen refueling stations serving the Winter Olympics have sprung up. For example, PetroChina's Hebei Prince Edward City Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Futian Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Jinlong Integrated Energy Service Station and Hebei Chongli North Oil hydrogen joint construction station and other four hydrogen refueling stations; Sinopec's Beijing Qingyuan Street Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Wangquanying Hydrogen Refueling Station, Beijing Yanhua Xinglong Oil Hydrogen Joint Construction Station, Hebei Chongli Xiwanzi Hydrogen Refueling Station; national energy group's first domestic 70 MPa integrated mobile hydrogen refueling station that meets the national standard requirements and explosion-proof certification of hydrogen refueling stations is delivered and put into use at Hebei Wanquan Oil Hydrogen-Electric Integrated Energy Station.
On December 27, 2021, the first batch of 390 kilograms of hydrogen fuel independently produced by PetroChina North China Petrochemical Company was officially listed at its own hydrogen refueling station; since the completion and operation of the hydrogen new energy supply project of Sinopec Yanshan Petrochemical Beijing Winter Olympics in March 2020, as of now, Yanshan Petrochemical has supplied more than 260 tons of high-purity hydrogen to Beijing and surrounding markets to support the Green Winter Olympics.
On January 28, the Zhangjiakou Green Hydrogen Energy Integration Demonstration Base Project was launched and the production of green hydrogen began. The project, one of the world's largest hydrogen-to-hydrogen electrolysis plants, will supply about 50 percent of the green hydrogen to hydrogen vehicles in Zhangjiakou during the Winter Olympics.
The perfect interpretation of the Green Winter Olympics and the Winter Olympics of Science and Technology
With the opportunity of the Winter Olympics, hydrogen energy models will be understood and recognized by more consumers. In fact, under the continuous help of favorable policies and the promotion of the "double carbon" goal, the hydrogen energy industry has already ushered in a development boom and has become a new outlet.
In March 2021, hydrogen energy was officially included in the draft outline of the "14th Five-Year Plan"; in December 2021, the "14th Five-Year Plan for Industrial Green Development" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed to accelerate hydrogen energy technology innovation and infrastructure construction, and promote the diversified use of hydrogen energy.
By the end of 2021, 16 provinces and cities across the country, including Beijing, Shandong, Hebei, Tianjin, Sichuan, Zhejiang and Ningxia, have formulated hydrogen energy development plans. On December 28, 2021, the Ministry of Finance and other five departments issued the "Notice on Launching a New Batch of Fuel Cell Vehicle Demonstration Application Work", and the two urban agglomerations of Hebei and Henan were officially approved, plus the first batch of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Shanghai and Guangdong urban agglomerations announced before, in 2022, a total of 5 major urban agglomerations will officially roll out the curtain of fuel cell demonstration applications on the mainland.
"The Beijing Winter Olympics is the first world-class event held by the mainland after the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan and in the context of double carbon, which is of great significance. To run the Olympic Games green, we must adhere to ecological priority, resource conservation, and environmental friendliness, and lay a beautiful Chinese background for the Winter Olympics. The relevant person in charge of Yutong Bus told the "China Automotive News" reporter.
He further said that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have the advantages of long endurance and fast fuel refueling of fuel vehicles, as well as the environmental protection characteristics of pure electric; with the characteristics of zero emission, long endurance and high convenience, it is the ultimate development direction of new energy vehicles. Hydrogen buses serve the Winter Olympics, responding to the call of the national "double carbon" strategy and a perfect interpretation of the green and technological Winter Olympics.
"The success of the large-scale application of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the Winter Olympics also indicates the bright prospects of the national hydrogen fuel cell city demonstration group project in mainland China." Mao Zongqiang said that combined with the display of hydrogen energy in the summer of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the successful display of the Beijing Winter Olympics in the cold winter will increase the world's new understanding of hydrogen energy and help promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry.
Travel services will continue to be provided in the future
With such a large number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, where will they go after the Winter Olympics?
Liu Jihong introduced that after ouhui hydrogen fuel buses serve the Winter Olympics, they will continue to provide the public with a safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly travel experience through various passenger service provider systems such as Beijing bus and Zhangjiakou bus. Next, the popularity of hydrogen fuel buses will accelerate, and gradually become the main choice for long-distance suburban public transportation and long-range intercity buses. In the future, with the further improvement of the hydrogen energy industry chain, hydrogen fuel buses will also expand to more fields with the advantages of safety, comfort and low carbon.
Cui Dongshu, secretary general of the National Passenger Vehicle Market Information Joint Association, told China Automotive News that the large-scale operation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles during the Winter Olympics is mainly to accumulate research and development experience for enterprises and industries, support the follow-up research and development and demonstration operation of the industry, and the main challenge of follow-up is how to expand the scope of use of products.
He further said that the main application scenarios of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are buses, fixed-line buses and logistics transportation, etc., lack of market expansion opportunities, to avoid similar to pure electric buses "there is a subsidy there is a market, no subsidies will shrink day by day" situation.
Start a new phase of development
"From the three hydrogen fuel cell buses at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, to the 196 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and then to the demonstration operation of thousands of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, it shows the development speed of Hydrogen Energy in China and the determination of the Chinese government to carry out energy revolution and reduce carbon dioxide emissions." Mao Zongqiang said.
According to the "China Hydrogen Energy Industry Development Report 2020", China's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle ownership will increase from 7352 in 2020 to 100,000 in 2025, and the market size of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is expected to reach 80 billion yuan by 2025.
The industry believes that hydrogen energy, as a clean and zero-carbon secondary energy source, occupies an important position in the future energy reform and will undertake the mission of helping to achieve the goal of "double carbon". The development stage of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles is similar to that of pure electric vehicles in 2010, at the technical level, priority is given to the promotion of commercial vehicles, and the promotion and application of commercial vehicles to further promote the large-scale application of passenger cars, and the expected annual compound growth rate of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the next five years is expected to reach 68%.
Taking the Green Winter Olympics as an opportunity, the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle industry will enter a new stage of development.
