The U.S. military's evaluation of the 12th Army is not excessive. However, in Shangganling, which resembled a meat grinder, in just a few days, the 92nd Regiment had to withdraw from the high ground, because the casualties were too great, and if it continued, the backbone of the 92nd Regiment might be wiped out.
On November 15, 1952, the 93rd Regiment of the 31st Division of the 12th Army climbed the 537.7 Highland North Mountain of Shangganling and replaced the 92nd Regiment, which was also a heroic regiment that had been in the battlefield for a long time, and its predecessor was the "Zhude Guard Regiment" during the War of Resistance.
The 537.7 highland, which was repeatedly bombed, could hardly find a foothold, a foot down the soil can not pass the calf belly, grab a handful of soil, you can see countless steel shrapnel, not even the place where the machine gun is mounted, a machine gunner can not find a hard ground, he put the machine gun on a body to start fighting, after a while to find that the body is actually his squad leader.
During the battle, the barrels of the machine guns were all red, and everyone took turns cooling the barrels with urine until the urine could not come out. On the 18th, the front command reported to the 15th Army: "I have consumed 16 companies since the 11th, and tonight the 106th Regiment will enter the battle." ”
In other words, in just 3 days, another regiment was almost crippled, and even with such sacrifices, the 93rd Regiment was still unable to completely hand over the 537.7 heights at the time of the handover of positions.
The 106th Regiment, already the ninth infantry regiment invested by the Chinese army from the Battle of Shangganling, in the face of huge casualties, Deputy Commander Li Desheng explained to the regimental commander Wu Xiaoxian:
"Your regiment must all restore and consolidate the North Mountain, and there will be no other regiments, and several main regiments have been exhausted... Your 106th regiment is ready to fight to the end, close the stalls! ”

Although the 106th Regiment was full of courage, it had to be admitted that this was the most brutal battle they had ever experienced, the Han Second Division fired shells at position 6 at any cost, wave after wave of heat, shrapnel sprayed wildly, and every shell fell, it could evolve into a blood mist.
Position No. 6 is the most prominent position on the North Hill of Highland 537.7, and it is also a low competition between the enemy and us, and both the enemy and us have paid a terrible price here.
Position No. 6 was taken by the ROK army on the evening of the 19th, and in the early morning of the 20th, the 9th Company sent a squad to counterattack Position No. 6, with a dozen people in the squad, and soon after, although Position No. 6 was taken back by our army, there was only one soldier left in this squad, and his name was Gao Shouyu.
Gao Shouyu also has a younger brother named Gao Shourong, both of whom bid farewell to their hometown in Shandong in 1951 and joined the volunteer army, and after arriving in Korea, the two brothers were also assigned to a squad.
A few days ago, the troops were assembled at the Five Holy Mountains, and Gao Shouyu saw that his brother's black cloth shoes had exposed his fingers, so he told his brother:
"I still have a new pair of shoes, and when this battle is over, I'll put them on for you."
However, Gao Shourong never had the opportunity to put on the new shoes again, and soon after he got into the position, Gao Shourong was wounded and fell to the ground, and when Gao Shouyu found his brother, one of his brother's legs had been blown up, and a fist-sized wound was cut by shrapnel in his abdomen, and a steaming intestine slipped out of his stomach, and his right arm was also shot.
Gao Shouyu shouted loudly from the side: "Shou Rong, you wake up!" Gao Shourong opened his eyes, but he could no longer speak, and at this moment, the Korean army once again launched an infantry charge.
Gao Shouyu could only say to his brother, "Shou Rong, you lie still and don't move, and when I fight back the enemy, I will take you back to heal your wounds!" Gao Shouyu's eyes were red, and with vengeful anger, he grabbed a basket of grenades and rushed up, at this time there was only one person in the position, Gao Shouyu, who desperately waved his arms and threw the grenades at the swarming Korean troops.
Seeing that the Roks could not attack, they launched another shelling attack, the earth began to tremble again, and Gao Shouyu dodged in a crater, but was still stunned by a shell. When he woke up again, he immediately looked for his brother, but the location of his brother had been flattened by the shell, and he desperately planed in the soil with tears, and finally found one of his brother's feet.
In just a moment, the brothers were forever separated, and Gao Shouyu hugged his brother's feet and cried bitterly. Just then, Gao Shouyu noticed that a Rok soldier had climbed up and threw a grenade at him.
Gao Shouyu, who had just lost his loved one, instantly stared at the ROK soldier with a hateful gaze, the grenade had not yet exploded, Gao Shouyu was quick in his hands, picked up the grenade and threw it back, the ROK soldier could not dodge, the grenade had not yet landed, it exploded in the air, and half of the rok soldier's head was blown up.
