How to reduce negative emotions?

First of all, although "negative emotions" sounds like something that must be avoided, it is actually very normal in itself, everyone will have it, who has not had an emotional fluctuation, right?

What we really need to reduce is the frequent occurrence of negative emotions. Because being in negative emotions for a long time will make you feel bored, uncomfortable, and depressed, which is not conducive to physical and mental health.

To reduce it, the first thing to do is to know how negative emotions arise.

In simple terms, our emotions are like icebergs, behavior is the explicit form of feeling, and behind it is the belief, which is caused by different life experiences. Beliefs are what you take for granted, there is no doubt about them, and are generally difficult to spot.

Before a group of friends reported that after making mistakes in their work and being criticized by the leaders, they were particularly sad. So why bother?

The criticism of the leader may only be a fuse, and behind it may correspond to the belief that "making mistakes means that you are not good, that you are a failure."

And you have this belief, probably because when you were a child, your parents would often say, "What else can you do if you make mistakes so simply?" Being a man is too much of a failure."

And the leader criticizes you, may have had the belief that "criticism can be valued, and then it will not be committed again", because at that time he was criticized in this way, and he felt that this was normal.

Most beliefs are not right or wrong, and beliefs are just an opinion, not the truth.

Most people may complain to their friends after encountering the above situation, and negative emotions can be temporarily alleviated. But if you don't realize that you have this belief, or don't know how to deal with it after realizing it, the next time you are criticized by the leader, you will still be very sad and feel that you are a failure.

How do you solve the problem at the root?

It is better to change others than to change yourself. We can learn about our beliefs, revise them, and practice them intensively later in our lives.

How do you find your beliefs? detect.

Awareness is the choice of an object of observation, observing it wholeheartedly, without judgment or blame, and accepting everything completely. The object of observation can be breath, environment, body, values, etc.

In the example above, you can keep asking yourself as you think: Why do you think that way?

  • Why is it so hard to make a mistake? Making mistakes makes me feel like I'm incompetent
  • Why is it sad to have poor ability? Poor ability, so I can't do anything well, I am a failure (usually may be stuck here)
  • Why is failure sad? My parents and society taught me not to fail 😭

In the end, you find that the belief that makes you have strong negative emotions is: "Making mistakes means that you are not good, that you are a failure."

After finding the underlying belief, how to correct it?

The series of inner inferences just now, if you study it carefully, will find that it is full of loopholes and illogical. To prevent the brain from automatically connecting later, we can use "critical thinking" to think about whether each inference is correct.

For example: I have poor ability in some aspects, so I can't do anything well, and I am a failure.

Rebuttal: Here is the "total fallacy of partial generalization", the ability of one aspect is poor≠ all the abilities are poor, and it cannot be deduced that I can't do anything well.

After thinking about it one by one, you will find that "a momentary mistake does not mean that I am a failure."

The next step is deliberate practice, repeating the above steps whenever a similar situation is encountered. Slowly your brain will not associate "making mistakes" with "I am a failure."

The next time something like that happens, you won't have negative emotions again.

After reading the process mentioned above, are you very impressed? But in the process of specific attempts, you may feel frustrated, because the belief will be hidden deeply, it is your habitual opinion, and it is not so easy to be found.

The Awareness Camp lasts 13 weeks for 91 days and helps everyone to better understand their needs and underlying beliefs and achieve a state of emotional stability from the following 3 stages.
