Director: "The Old Man and the Scriptures" tells the story of a Yi old Bimo who realized after the unfortunate death of his son that his Bimo scriptures were about to be lost, because these scriptures were handed down from generation to generation by ancestors, and the old man did not want to see the Bimo scriptures lost in his hands, so he tried to find an heir, tried various ways and encountered various difficulties, and finally the old man chose the traditional way of inheritance, passed the scriptures to his little grandson, and ended up with endless worries.

The Inspiration for The Old Man and the Scriptures was born during the preparation of another film. At that time, the film prepared was also about the Yi Bimo culture, and it was necessary to find a young Bimo as the main actor, because this role needed to chant, and there were requirements for the mastery of Bimo culture, and the average actor could not meet the requirements.

We went deep into the countryside to look for such a young Bimo, but we did not expect that in the process of searching, we found that young people were unwilling to learn Bimo culture, and we could not find young Bimo who met the conditions. This is a very heart-wrenching fact, the traditional culture of the Yi people has a long history and has a unique cultural charm, and the Yi Bimo Scriptures are the masters of the traditional culture of the Yi people. It contains all aspects of the life of the Yi people, including religion, philosophy, medicine, social life and other rich connotations.

The loss of the Bimo Sutra means the loss of the traditional culture of the Yi people, which is a sad but helpless fact. In order to be able to make our own contribution to the inheritance of traditional culture, we intend to use film and television communication to attract people's attention to traditional culture. Q: The actors in the film perform very simply, these non-professional actors in the selection process and the filming process of the film, what experience does the director have to share with you?

Director: The actors in the film are basically the same as their true colors, and using non-professional actors is a helpless choice. Because the plot requires actors to understand Yi and can speak Yi, but the development of Yi film and television culture is very lagging behind, professional Yi actors are extremely scarce, and there are not several professional actors in the whole country, let alone actors who meet the role.

So in desperation, we decided to find characters similar to the characters and let them play in their true colors. In the process of finding actors, we found that there are many characters who match the role. But these people are very awkward when they face the camera, as if they have changed people. This is how I found that playing myself is not such a simple thing.

Especially for the candidates who played the old Bimo, we couldn't make any professional demands on an old man in his seventies who had never even seen a camera. Many people audition is the same effect. About half a month before the start-up, we have not found a suitable candidate to play the old Bimo, and when we are all in despair, we are introduced to meet the old man who is now - Yi Huowu. This old man himself is a Bimo, the age, the image temperament is very in line with the role of the old Bimo, the most important point is that this old man is very lively, facing the camera will not be afraid of the stage. So decisively set this old man and start shooting.

During the filming process, the biggest problem encountered in the performance was that the back line and the performance could not be integrated, and the back line forgot the performance, and the grasp of the performance forgot the line. Other actors are fine, more practice and more walking can also pass the pass, the old Bimo is the most helpless for us, because of the age, memory is not good, can not remember the lines at all.

Later, there was really no way, so we told the old man what he was going to do in this scene, what he wanted to express, and he was free to shoot us. Therefore, the lines of each line of the old man's play are different. This brought a lot of trouble to the post-editing, but fortunately, the old Bimo was highly compatible with the role, and how to act did not leave the character characteristics. There are even some places where there are no small surprises, such as performances that do not require lines, and the old man can be said to be in place, and even portrayed deeply.

Q: The continuous development of society, the continuous renewal of concepts, and some traditional cultures of intangible cultural heritage are now facing the situation of being lost, and the film takes the inheritance of the old Bimo of the Yi people as the theme, showing the far-reaching Culture of the Yi people. The contrast between young people and the elderly, traditional culture and popular culture in the film collides and dialogues, and this contrast makes a deep impression on us in the film.

Director: Speaking of cultural loss, in order to better explain the intention of "The Old Man and the Scriptures", I would like to say a few digressions first. I think the loss of a culture should be analyzed from two perspectives. On the one hand: the cultural form is lost, on the other hand: the cultural core is lost.

Formally speaking, in the process of human social development, the loss of one cultural form will inevitably be accompanied by the rise of another cultural form. Because human needs for spiritual culture and material culture have not changed much in essence. For example, the writing of characters has developed from oracle bones to bamboo jane, from bamboo jane to paper, from paper to electronic text.
