Contemporary Chinese Literature 2021

List of the latest works

Before the Spring Festival of the Year of the Tiger, the "2021 List of the Latest Works of Contemporary Chinese Literature" was announced in Beijing. Lin Sen's novella "Only Water Young", Deng Yiguang's short story "Take You to See the Light Show", Zhou Xiaofeng's essay "The Kiss of the Esper", Tieliu's reportage "Patron" and other 24 works were selected into the four lists of novellas, short stories, essays and reportage.

Founded in 1997, the List of the Latest Works of Contemporary Chinese Literature, sponsored by Beijing Literature, is the earliest and longest list of literary works in China, and it is also one of the most comprehensive literary rankings in China, which has been held for 25 years. Under the guidance of the principles of objectivity, impartiality and pluralism, after a number of literary anthologies and the recommendation of many experts and scholars across the country, on the basis of the review and discussion of experts and editors in the past two months, a number of original annual literary masterpieces with literary, ideological and contemporary characteristics have been selected. The number of entries in this year's ranking has been slightly adjusted, from 5 works per year in each category in previous editions to 6 works.

The 6 novellas selected have their own characteristics, or explore metaphysical propositions, or present original ecological experiences, or cut into the subconscious field, or reveal real problems, and have profound enlightenment at the emotional, philosophical and aesthetic levels. Lin Sen's "Only Water Young" tells the life and death of generations of fishermen, presenting the unchanging spiritual inheritance under the vicissitudes of the times, the structure is calm and measured, and the narrative scheduling is more than enough. "Heavenly Objects" is a collection of Sun Pin's series of works in recent years, exploring the realm of collection, the dignity of surnames, and the destination of life, and is a good work with both depth and detail. Ji Wenjun's "Building a Garden" illustrates a vast dream-driven world with condensed language and complex clues, reminding people to find consensus again in the new epidemic era. Yao Emei's "Sloth in Love" focuses on the darkness of the human heart, the life of a failed mother is clear from the atmosphere full of suspense, and the inexplicable tragedy makes the reader rethink the parent-child relationship. Grigy Leqimug Black Crane's Bear Dog is an animal novel. The bear-driving dog is brave and loyal, with a purity and fearlessness that is different from humans; the author's narrative of nature, spirituality, and masculinity conveys a valuable original ecological experience. Li Fengqun's "Partners" contrasts the growth of two teenagers in different eras, reflects on the problems existing in the education system, and the sad and repressed subject emotions support the novel from catharsis, shouting to criticism.

The six short stories on the list show China's cities and villages, history and reality, and the fate of people in the changing times from different aspects. "Take You to see the Light Show" is Deng Yiguang's best work on the list after last year's short story. Titled Light Show, it is actually an emotional show for middle-aged couples, the surface is calm and quiet, but the deep but undercurrent is turbulent, undulating, is the face of all beings of an era. Chi Zijian's "The Sound of Drinking Soup" tells the life experience of three generations of the Harabo family in the Heilongjiang River with a phantom woman in a tavern, and writes the trauma of war, the cycle of life and the back of fate in a unique tone. The ironclad "The Messenger" is a valuable harvest of the short story of the year, full of soothing, pure and rich, gentle and vigorous, and explores the metaphysical meaning of "messenger" with the "messenger" story in the superficial sense. Pan Xiangli's "Lotus Ginger" writes that "death" is related to the disillusionment of love, and the delicate strokes of the pen point directly to the spiritual dilemma of modern cities where marriage has nowhere to escape and emotions are unable to communicate. Chen Chuncheng is the only post-90s writer selected, and his "Snow Mountain Master" initially highlights the creative strength of emerging writers. The story of a celebrity idol de-haloed, wrote out the amazing legendary experience of all sentient beings, and the oldness of the text showed a rare classic quality. Su Yigua's "Mingji Xiaoguo Marriage and Divorce Attachment" is a story triggered by an April Fool's Day report, a fictional event that brings about life changes and another life trend. How language affects existence, how fiction changes reality, this novel gives the answer in a unique way.

This year's selected essays bring together some of The best writers in China today, and their works continue to expand the richness and possibilities of prose. Zhou Xiaofeng's "Kiss of the Espers" uses a highly recognizable tone to write down the traces carved by the little beasts in her life and soul. The change of dynasties and the subversion of order in Li Jingze's "Heaven and Spring and Autumn" allow us to see the rich and broad part of Chinese culture from another side. Chen Fumin's "Distant Thinking of Right Beiping" is a deep dialogue between contemporary scholars and history, which can be regarded as the author's tribute to his hometown. "Ten Years of Liangzhuang" is a more literary piece of Liang Hong's work, which examines the changes of Chinese villages from a new perspective and brings the people of Liangzhuang back to our vision again. Han Man's "Garden of the Future" provides a vivid aspect of the magnificent modern and contemporary history of China with the life trajectory of modern poet Xu Yunuo. Chen Nianxi's "Living is Shouting into the Sky" records the true fate of China's low-level laborers, rough and heavy, and there is a deep tenderness and delicacy.

2021 is the centenary of the founding of the Communist Party of China, reviewing the century-old history and writing glorious footprints has become a prominent theme in reportage. Tie Liu's "Patron" writes on a large scale that the masses of the people enthusiastically support the front, depicts a large number of ordinary and great images of the people, and confirms the relationship between the people and the party as patrons of each other. Huang Chuanhui's "Looking Up at the Starry Sky" focuses on the mainland's aerospace industry, showing the life trajectory and major contributions of Academician Sun Jiadong, the recipient of the "Order of the Republic", and a group of astronauts. Chen Qiwen's "China Rice Bowl" focuses on China's food security, using a large number of facts and details to reveal China's historic transformation from "not enough to eat" to "enough to eat" and "eat well". Hu Songtao's "Yan'an Fanlu" was serialized in 12 issues of Meiwen magazine, focusing on party history, unique and interesting in rigor. Yang Liping's "Chinese Takeaway Brother under the Tip of the Tongue" presents the living conditions of the urban takeaway brother group with documentary-style brushstrokes. Ren Linju's "The Purity of pure land - the "ecological revolution" and humanistic legend originating in Gannan" comprehensively presents the "environmental revolution" of Gannan with timeless words, and excavates the environmental awareness hidden in the hearts of the people of Gannan. The 6 reportage works on the list are related to the times, have the world in mind, are thick and calm, and are wonderful, showing the reportage focusing on the big vision of the times and the ability to capture the big history.
