Hu Qingkui: The bonsai in my life

Hu Qingkui: The bonsai in my life

I had an encounter with Bonsai after a serious illness. Time: 1978; Location: Shashi, Hubei.

That year, I had nasopharyngeal cancer, and I was given radiation and chemotherapy in Wuhan Tongji Hospital, which made my face dark and I couldn't even touch a hair on my head. After being discharged from the hospital, one day when I walked to the flower room of the municipal party committee, a pot of five-needle pine on the root art shelf suddenly jumped into view, and I still remember the vicissitudes of dryness, curved branches, and verdant leaves. Facing the pot tree, I just stood on the threshold of death with soft legs, and I couldn't help but think of the twists, tenacity and tenacity of life - how similar is human life to bonsai?

So, on that drizzling spring day 44 years ago, I met Bonsai.

After that, bonsai "entered my life", went up the mountain to find piles, found Shennongjia; went down the river to find stones and found the Xiangxi River; learned from painting to be virtual and dense, learned from calligraphy, and spent all their spare time in the mix with bonsai.

In 1993, when I went south to Hainan, when I went to the island, my luggage was checked in, and I was holding a pot of small bonsai of Nantian bamboo that had just bloomed.

In Hainan, which is known as "tree raising paradise" in the industry, I almost traveled all over the landscape of Qiongdao Island, and in less than half a year, I had dozens of pile heads, which were held on the roof of room 401 of the old municipal party committee compound. Heavy wind and rain, especially when the typhoon, shaky, as if a roof of water is going to pour out, left and right neighbors are worried that the house can not stand, sometimes there are "complaints", simply, in the spring of 1999 in Xiuying Phoenix Flower City to rent a few points of land, built a small "Chu Feng Garden", specializing in bonsai.

Time flies through the ordinary and trots forward. Fingers crossed, and bonsai have been in the same vein for 44 years! In the half of my life with bonsai, although I am poor, there are a few things that are worth mentioning.

In October 2007, the "Hu Qingkui Hainan Native Tree Species Bonsai Exhibition" sponsored by the Propaganda Department of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee opened at the Provincial Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, and the provincial leaders Zhou Wenzhang, Wang Weilu and Fu Yuelan watched the exhibition. Yang Lan's Hong Kong Sunshine Satellite TV sent a reporter to Qiong for an interview. It is said that the personal bonsai exhibition hosted by the Propaganda Department of the Provincial Party Committee is still the only one. From this point of view, Wei Rusong, a hainan daily registration reporter, made an interview with "Hu Qingkui: The encounter between the tree and him is his fate", sprinkled with thousands of words, accounting for the entire page of the newspaper. At that time, Wu Liyang, vice chairman of the Provincial Writers Association who was in charge of the Literary and Art Department of Hainan Daily, also "hit the iron by the heat" and launched 5 of my appreciation articles with bonsai pictures in the "Coconut Wind" supplement. Later, Li Yang, who was transferred to the vice chairman of the Sichuan Writers Association, said to me, your brother has set a precedent for the provincial party newspaper to publish bonsai appreciation!

In 2010, I "went with the flow", with the support of the Provincial Bonsai Committee, published Hainan's first bonsai monograph "Hainan Tree Bonsai Production and Maintenance", which was listed as one of the series of practical technologies for tropical high-efficiency agriculture in Hainan, priced at 6.50 yuan, because of the cheap plus applicable, Mr. Chen Qicong of Hainan Ledong bought 100 copies at a time to give to the villagers. The book was republished in May of the following year.

The old days have gone by in a flash. I retired in 2012 and have since gone from amateur to "professional". In 2019, the Chufeng Wood and Stone Museum, which has Hainan elements as the main collection, opened on National Day, and half of its rivers and mountains are more than 40 kinds of Hainan tree species bonsai in the outdoor museum. In 2020, in the first national "Most Creative Bonsai Art Competition" sponsored by China Famous Enterprise Hui and CITS Shenzhen Company, "One Flower, One Wood, One Style, One Pot, One Scene, One World", Kodate passed the hurdle and won the championship with 27852 votes. In May 2021, ms. Lin Li's team selected 33 bonsai works from our museum to participate in the first China International Consumer Goods Expo.

Just now, on the morning of the first day of the Tiger New Year, I received a notice from the Chinese Popular Literature and Art Research Association that the Calendar of the Year of the Tiger made with my bonsai + poems has been donated to foreign embassies in China, which has been warmly sought after! ”

A friend has asked me online over and over again what are the benefits of making bonsai, worth spending 44 years of my life? In addition to the loftiness of passing on traditional culture, I do not dare to say four benefits. The first is to forget about worries. The world is troubled, there are many worries, once you pick up the scissors, the broken things are not on the heart, what else can not be released? The second is to succeed. What a joy to watch a rotten pile head that a peasant woman doesn't even want to burn a fire become a work of art under your scissors and lead wire! The third is to send affection. Mr. Zong Baihua once said that art is a view of life. I am always trying to give my work my thoughts, feelings and style. The fourth is pleasant. Imagine a century-old dragon's blood tree, resting on a Ming and Qing stone mortar, an old man with long hair and a shawl, facing a pot of literati tree bonsai on the stone mortar, a cup of Biluochun in his left hand, and a scroll of idle books in his right hand, "a cup of fragrant tea for half a day." "How cozy! Fifth, fitness. Making bonsai is both mental and physical. Plot layout, creative title, brain power; dig piles up the mountain (protect the ecology, now the government does not let dig), cure insects and fertilize, trim the shape, pull grass for pots, physical strength. It's a good thing to be able to do. Recently, I read a newspaper saying that the West advocates "static exercise", that is, exercise that does not sweat much and does not work very hard. I have been suffering from cancer for 44 years, and I still live as my friend said , "crunchy", is it also due to this "static exercise"?

Another thing – not pedantic, of course, not pretentious – is to make bonsai and learn from nature closely. Hugo said: Man is a product of nature. Tagore said: Nature is always the source of all beauty. I said: In the face of nature, man is nothing more than a three-year-old child who is very young and learns to speak. Learn from the vast and profound nature, which is enough! And do bonsai, daily reading appreciation, daily speculation taste, every day to listen to the vicissitudes of a century-old tree, watch young trees grow up, who said that the tree's tenacity, generosity, vivid and lively, elegant and calm, can not give people some education and enlightenment?

During the two sessions of the National People's Congress last April, the People's Representative Daily published a special page entitled "Exhibition of Hu Qingkui's Works", which included a small poem entitled "Bonsai":

I'm with a butterfly

Stand in front of you

New leaves are like fire

Old dry as iron

I read feminine

Read masculine

Reading the song

with fierceness

Butterfly said

That's you

vital

years

Appreciation of Hu Qingkui's poetry works

"But Hear the Birds"

There were three trees on the rock, and four or five people under the trees.

But the birds were heard, and there was no common voice.

Life and death are in love, and a song "Liang Zhu" moves Chu Garden.

"One Arm makes Fun"

Hu Qingkui

One arm is funny, and he can't bear to get a thick hand to get a branch.

Twenty years of hard work by whom? Moss Green Chrysanthemum white sighed far away.

Hu Qingkui

I remember reading poetry when I was young, and I loved to deviate from my true temperament.
