Volkswagen Group China will sell 3.3 million vehicles in China in 2021

In 2021, Volkswagen Group China and its joint venture delivered a total of 3.3 million vehicles in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong (down 14.1% year-on-year). Volume brands were significantly affected by the global chip supply shortage; Porsche, Bentley and Lamborghini performed well, setting new annual sales records, achieving year-on-year growth of 7.5%, 40.0% and 54.8% respectively. The Volkswagen brand and its sub-brand Jetta delivered more than 2.4 million vehicles in the whole year (down 14.8% year-on-year), but with a market share of 11.7%, it continues to be the first choice for Chinese consumers to buy a car.

Dr. Sihan Feng, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, said: "2021 is one of the most challenging years since we entered the Chinese market. We have a considerable order volume, but the shortage of chips has prevented our capacity from meeting customer demand. The closure of our OEMs and suppliers' factories due to the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the lack of capacity and caused us to lose some market share. However, thanks to the strong performance in the first half of the year and continued challenges, we are still able to maintain our leading market position. Looking forward to 2022, the chip supply situation will still fluctuate in the first half of the year, but it is expected to gradually improve, and our production will also stabilize during the year. ”

Dr. Feng Sihan added: "Despite the multiple challenges, we continue to accelerate the electrification transition. The Group successfully launched 10 new energy vehicles, including 7 pure electric models. Our new energy strategy is gaining momentum, with sales of new energy vehicles doubling and deliveries of pure electric vehicles tripling. Our sustainable-minded Volkswagen Anhui MEB plant and Volkswagen Anhui Parts Plant have broken ground and will be completed this year and put into operation in 2023. In addition, we have developed a strategic roadmap for China in 2030, which will focus on innovation and build a strong R&D base to launch specific products and services, including digital connectivity and autonomous driving technology, at a faster pace to meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

In 2021, the Volkswagen brand and its sub-brand Jetta sold more than 2.4 million units in Chinese mainland and Hong Kong (down 14.8% year-on-year). Despite the challenges of the past year, the Volkswagen brand remains the first choice for Chinese consumers and has further expanded its product line with the launch of 7 new models and 6 remodeled models. Approximately 718,000 SUV models were delivered in the full year, accounting for 31.8% of the brand's total sales (29.9% in 2020). At the same time, the cumulative sales of new energy vehicles exceeded 119,000 units, a year-on-year surge of 128%, setting a record for the highest growth in history. This impressive performance is mainly due to the launch of the all-electric ID.series of models and its continued steady growth, including two ID.4 models, two ID.6 models and ID.3 models. Although the production of ID.series models has continued to be affected by the shortage of chips since October, 70,000 units have been delivered by the end of 2021. The Jetta sub-brand delivered nearly 170,000 units, with a strong year-on-year increase of 8.9% in sales and a market share of 0.8%.

The Audi brand will deliver 701,300 vehicles in China in 2021. Sales of imported models surged by 53.9%, with demand for S and RS models soaring by 187.1% and 124.7% respectively. Several models, including the Audi Q2L, Audi A3 Sportback, Audi A4 Avant and Audi A6 Allroad, are leading the market segments, while the Audi Q8, Audi RS 7, Audi RS 6, Q5 L Sportback, Q3 Sportback and Q2L e-tron have set record sales of the best sales in their history. With the delivery of SAIC Audi models and the next phase of electrification offensive, the Audi brand is expected to achieve further growth in 2022. With the release of the first MEB models, including the Q4 e-tron, Q5 e-tron, Audi's first "Roadjet" and e-tron GT, the New Energy Models of the Audi brand will also be fully strengthened.

Thanks to the launch of the Octavia PRO and Kolok MY 2022 models in May and November, the Skoda brand delivered a total of 71,200 vehicles to Chinese consumers in 2021. Both models will be widely recognized by the industry in 2021. In the China Automotive Industry User Satisfaction Index (CACSI) released by the China Association for Quality, Octavia PRO ranks first in its segment of the user satisfaction ranking. In the 2021 China Automotive Product Attractiveness Index study released by J.D. Power, Krock ranked first in the compact SUV.

China is the largest single market for the Porsche brand, and in 2021, Porsche performed well in China, achieving another 7.5% increase based on the historical sales record in 2020. Despite the challenges posed by supply bottlenecks, Porsche was able to deliver 95,700 vehicles to customers in China. The iconic Porsche 911 continued its solid performance, with sales up 67% year-on-year, with a total of 4,002 vehicles delivered. Demand for the Taycan continues to be strong, with deliveries exceeding 7,000 units.
