At the beginning of 1940, he was assigned to the Jiangnan Headquarters of the New Fourth Army under the command of Chen Yi and Su Yu as the chief and deputy commanders as a staff officer... Since then, under the leadership of Chief Su Yu, I have fought against the enemy, worked and studied until the liberation of the whole country. Especially in the days when he worked by his side, the chief's sincere teachings and careful guidance benefited me for life....."
In Wan Haifeng's revolutionary military career, Su Yu can be described as his nobleman.
In 1920, Wan Haifeng was born in an ordinary peasant family in Guangshan County, Henan Province, and his father called him "Maotou" because he could not afford to ask someone to give him a name.
At that time, the Guangshan area was a very active area of the Red Army, and Mao tou could often see the Red Army's propaganda slogan "Fight the local tyrants and divide the land" on the wall of the village.
In 1933, Mao Tou followed his second uncle to find the Guangshan Independent Regiment and wanted to join the Red Army, this year Mao Tou was only 13 years old, young, low in stature, the leaders of the army were unwilling to accept him, Mao Tou was dead or alive, he said: "I came to join the army." ”

Mao Tou retorted to him: "When you are young, you can herd cattle, you can endure hardships, you can also send sentries and send letters, you let the adults do it, isn't this a waste?" ”
For the first time, the leader of the unit experienced MaoTou's wit, and he became a member of the Red Army as he wished.
Soon after joining the army, Mao Tou's second uncle fell ill, when the army was very nervous about guerrilla warfare, the leader let Mao Tou send the second uncle home to recuperate, the road was bumpy, almost to the village, the second uncle died, at this time, there were two options left in front of Mao Tou's eyes, one was to continue to go back, the other was to go back to the troops.
Thinking about it, Mao Tou felt that going back was likely to affect his family, so he felt that he would go back to the army.
When he walked back to the garrison, the troops had already left, Mao tou looked around for troops, cold and hungry, he fainted on a large rock, I don't know how long later, Mao to wake up, see several middle-aged men in front of him.
One man asked, "Where did you come from?" ”
Mao Tou looked at them and didn't look like bad people, and said, "From The Mountain of Light." ”
"Where are you going?"
Mao Tou: "I'm going to find the Red Army." ”
The middle-aged man laughed, and Mao Tou told him about his experience in joining the army, and after he finished speaking, another middle-aged man came to his side and said, "You are young, but you have such a firm heart, I took you in." ”
The middle-aged man who had just spoken explained next to him: "Little comrade, quickly shout High Political Commissar, this is Gao Jingting, the political commissar of our 28th Army." ”
At this time, Mao Tou learned that the troops he had joined had already moved to northern Shaanxi, and before leaving, they left Gao Jingting behind, asking Gao Jingting to insist on leading guerrilla warfare here, and established the 28th Army, appointing Gao Jingting as the political commissar.
In this way, Mao Tou became Gao Jingting's service soldier.

Later, Mao Tou felt that since he had officially joined the Red Army, it was not appropriate to call Mao Tou anymore, so he found Gao Jingting and asked him to give him a name, and Gao Jingting thought for a moment and said: "We, the Red Army, have gathered from all directions. This fighting collective, as big as the ocean, as high as a mountain peak, has a brilliant future for both troops and individuals. Your surname is Wan, is it okay to call you Wan Haifeng? ”
Mao Tou nodded hurriedly, "Be well." From then on, he had an official name, Wan Haifeng.
Since then, Wan Haifeng has been following Gao Jingting, and in 1939, Gao Jingting, as the commander of the fourth detachment of the New Fourth Army, killed well, and the troops immediately launched a campaign, and Wan Haifeng was transferred to the Teaching Team of the Anhui Southern Army Of the New Fourth Army.
A year later, he was assigned to the Jiangnan Headquarters of the New Fourth Army, which was commanded by Chen Yi and Su Yu, as staff officers.
When they first arrived, Su Yu received them: "We welcome you from the teaching team to work here. The command has just been set up, and your addition has added strength to us. Staff officers are think tanks, and formulating operational plans requires you to give advice and suggestions; staff officers need to master a lot of knowledge and have high requirements for comprehensive ability; I hope that you will continue to study in practice, strive to be a qualified staff officer, and contribute your blood to the work of the command headquarters. ”
These words greatly encouraged Wan Haifeng, who was determined to work well.
When he was a staff officer at the headquarters, Wan Haifeng often discussed some issues with his comrades, and sometimes, he would also ask Su Yu, who did not refuse to come and answer questions, which greatly improved Wan Haifeng's military ability.
Once, when Wan Haifeng was discussing with his comrades the issue of the organization of the staff officers of the troops, Su Yu came and Asked: "What is the most important point in the development of the troops after that?" ”

In January 1941, the Kuomintang Li Changjiang surrendered to the Japanese army, and Su Yu of the New Fourth Army was ordered to annihilate Li Changjiang.
The second battalion of the Seventh Regiment of the Independent Brigade of the Soviet Union and China was an old unit based on the Red Army, and later in the Battle of Huangqiaozhan, heavy losses were suffered, and the commander of the battalion was also sacrificed, and now there is no leader, and morale is very weak.
Su Yu thought about it and decided to directly transfer Wan Haifeng as the battalion commander.
At this time, Wan Haifeng was still a staff officer, he had never been a company commander, a platoon leader, but he was directly promoted to battalion commander, many people were opposed, believing that Wan Haifeng could not shoulder this heavy burden, Su Yu believed that Wan Haifeng was meticulous and thoughtful, and he was a suitable candidate, and he insisted on promoting Wan Haifeng as a battalion commander.
The soldiers of the second battalion learned that a 21-year-old hairy boy had also become their battalion commander, and many people felt hairy in their hearts: "Will this little battalion commander really take us to victory?" ”
Wan Haifeng was very grateful for Su Yu's kindness, and he also made up his mind that he would not disappoint Su Yu.

Wan Haifeng came to Shijiadai, used the captured Li Changjiang's military uniforms, signs, and captured the enemy company commander alive without spending a single shot or a bullet, and then he asked the troops to set up an ambush near Shijiadai.
Under the order of Wan Haifeng, the troops launched an attack, the enemy was in a hurry, our army annihilated hundreds of enemy people, but also captured more than 300 people, since becoming the battalion commander, Wan Haifeng fought such a victorious battle for the first time, the soldiers of the second battalion have great admiration for Wan Haifeng, and are willing to let him be their battalion commander.
Just after the battle of Shijiadai, Wan Haifeng once again led his troops to Miao Bay and fought a victorious battle again.
After three days of fighting two victorious battles, at this time, no one questioned Wan Haifeng's command ability anymore, after that, Wan Haifeng successively served as deputy commander of the army, regimental commander and other positions, during the Liberation War, under the command of Su Yu, he participated in the seven victories of the Seven Wars of Suzhou and China, Laiwu, Meng Lianggu, Pinghan Road Breaking Battle, Yudong, Huaihai and other battles, he made great achievements for the revolution.
In 1952, Wan Haifeng entered the Korean War and made new contributions.
When awarded the rank in 1955, he was awarded the rank of colonel.
When the Tangshan earthquake occurred, the 24th Army headquarters led by Wan Haifeng was stationed in Tangshan, and he took the initiative to ask Miao to participate in the rescue work, after that, Wan Haifeng actively coordinated rescue affairs, and he ran in Tangshan for more than 100 days and nights, making great contributions to the rescue work in Tangshan.
In 1988, Wan Haifeng was awarded the rank of general.
In his later years, when looking back on the past, Wan Haifeng always remembered the old chief Su Yu with deep affection: "His surprising and victorious military command art, his strict and loving style of leading soldiers, the principle of managing the army with both wisdom and courage, the way of commanding the troops with a prescribed system, and the virtue of believing and valuing power have always been our models for studying work, growing and progressing, and being a person." ”
