General Wang Yang, former deputy commander of the Beijing Military Region and commander of the 5th Division of the 2nd Column of Siye, told an interesting story in his memoirs:
After he went to Yan'an in 1937, he took the initiative to ask to go to the front to resist japan, so he was sent to the 689th Regiment of the 344th Brigade of the 115th Division, and the leader of this regiment was Han Xianchu.
After Wang Yang arrived at the 689th Regiment, he was first sent to the company as a deputy platoon commander, and as soon as there was a battle, he was transferred to the regimental headquarters as a probationary staff officer; after the battle, he was sent to the grass-roots level to continue to be a deputy platoon commander, and when there was a battle, he was transferred back to the regimental headquarters as a probationary staff officer.
Everyone wondered why the regimental commander was tossing him so much.
This mystery was not solved until after liberation, and once Wang Yang and Han Xianchu had dinner and asked about this matter, Han Xianchu said to Wang Yang: I am afraid that you have died in battle, but you are the treasure of our regiment.
It turned out that Before General Wang Yang defected to Yan'an to participate in the revolution, he had been admitted to suide Normal School in 1934 at the age of 14, which was similar to secondary school in the old era, which was a package of assigned work, and because of the shortage of teachers in the country at that time, all provinces would give certain subsidies to students in normal schools, so many people took the exam, especially students whose families were not rich, which was much more difficult than ordinary middle schools.

As a result, after graduating from the normal school, General Wang Yang did not choose to be a teacher, but went to Yan'an to participate in the revolution, at that time there were not many intellectuals who defected to the revolution, Wang Yang was considered to be one of the best, so he entered the Northern Shaanxi Public School that year to study, and later was selected to study in the 4th military team of the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University.
In the early days of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, officers with secondary school cultural knowledge who had received a complete teacher education like General Wang Yang and then studied military command at the Northern Shaanxi Public School and the Anti-Japanese Military and Political University system were rare in the entire Eighth Route Army system.
Therefore, Han Xianchu was not wrong at all to say that Wang Yang was the "baby bump" of the 689 regiment.

Of course, the superiors did not blindly protect Wang Yang and these intellectual officers and prevent them from going to the battlefield, mainly so that they had a process of adapting to and familiarizing themselves with the war; however, this kind of "novice protection period" was indeed a rare preferential treatment.
General Wang Yang successively served as the propaganda officer, deputy company commander, brigade combat staff officer of the 689th Regiment, combat staff officer of the 10th Brigade of the New Fourth Army, commander of the independent 2nd Regiment of the 10th Brigade of the 10th Brigade of the 3rd Division, chief of staff of the detachment, chief of staff of the 29th Regiment of the 10th Brigade, and other posts.
All this is enough to prove that General Wang Yang is worthy of the "novice protection period" preferential treatment given to him by his old superior Han Xianchu.
In fact, the Eighth Route Army does not want to be "soil", and the Eighth Route Army is also very eager for more and more intellectuals to join the Eighth Route Army, and it is precisely because of the Eighth Route Army's desire for high-quality officers that there will be preferential treatment for wang Yang and these intellectual cadres.
The real question is how many intellectuals went to the front like General Wang Yang during the eight-year War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
Judging from the feedback from the Kuomintang army or the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, there are not many intellectuals who are really willing to join the army and fight devils.
