On January 13, the Wisdom Bud Innovation Research Center released a report showing that as of December 31, 2021, the total patent applications of 219 A-share auto companies were about 170,000, about 23,500 effective invention patents, about 2,900 software copyrights, and about 33,400 trademarks.
From the perspective of the number of patent applications, the average of more than 4600 A-share companies is about 377, and the average number of A-share automobile companies is about 776; from the perspective of the number of effective invention patents, the average of more than 4600 A-share companies is about 74, and the average of A-share automobile companies is about 107. Wisdom Bud reported that whether from the perspective of patent capability or patent quality, A-share automobile companies are ahead of A-share companies as a whole.
In terms of sub-sectors, the automotive industry is divided into five major sectors, namely passenger cars, commercial vehicles, auto parts, automotive services and other transportation equipment. Among them, passenger cars, commercial vehicles and auto parts are the three most important sectors in the layout of the automotive industry. According to the Wisdom Bud report, in terms of patent applications, effective inventions, software copyrights and trademarks, the average number of passenger car companies is ahead of commercial vehicle companies and auto parts companies.
For example, the 12 A-share passenger car companies hold a total of about 92,000 patent applications, about 12,000 effective invention patents, about 1,150 software copyrights, and about 15,000 trademarks, while the 11 A-share commercial vehicle companies hold about 20,000 patent applications, about 2,300 valid invention patents, about 300 software copyrights, and about 3,900 trademarks.
Exploring the star enterprises of science and technology innovation in the automotive industry, the top 20 are BYD, Jianghuai Automobile, Weichai Power, Foton Automobile, SAIC Motor, Great Wall Motor, GAC Group, Changan Automobile, Wanxiang Qianchao, Xingyu Shares, Weifu Hi-Tech, Yutong Bus, Juyi Technology, China Automobile Research Institute, Fuyao Glass, Tongda Electric, Yapu Shares, Baolong Technology, Dongfeng Motor, and Zheng Coal Machinery. Among them, there are 6 passenger car companies, 3 commercial vehicle companies, 10 auto parts companies, and 1 automobile service company.
It is worth noting that among A-share passenger car companies, BYD has a leading edge. According to the Wisdom Bud report, BYD holds about 25,000 patent applications, accounting for 28% of the total number of patent applications in the top 10 A-share passenger car companies. At the same time, BYD holds more than 6,600 valid patents, accounting for 43% of the total number of effective patents in the top 10 A-share passenger car companies.
