AMD Zen4 AM5 interface detail exposure: clever, conscientious

AMD has officially announced that the Zen4 architecture of the Ryzen™ 7000 series processors will switch to the AM5 LGA1718 package interface, 5nm process manufacturing, support DDR5, PCIe 5.0, the second half of the year debut.

After six years of insisting on using the AM4 interface, AMD made it clear that it hoped that the AM5 would be used for at least four or five years.

Today, Igor's Lab exposed two detailed photos of the AM5 interface, which can see its detailed structural composition and installation method.

Overall, the design of amD AM5 interface and Intel LGA1700 and other schemes are very similar, installation, disassembly methods are also achieved through a pressure bar, can ensure that the pressure is evenly distributed on the surface of the processor, the operation is also very simple, there will be no more embarrassment of unplugging the heatsink and taking out the processor.

However, unlike the LGA1700, the AM5's auxiliary backplane is connected together by four screws and a socket retention bracket, which can ensure that the heatsink is fully aligned with the socket and processor.

It is very conscientious that although AMD has changed the interface this time, it is still compatible with the radiator of the am4 old platform, and it can be used directly without a bracket.

In addition to the installation hole position and hole spacing remaining unchanged, it also benefits from AMD's innovative design on the processor package: in order to give the contacts ample space, the capacitor components are not installed on the back side as usual, but placed on the front, and the thermal ceiling cover (IHS) is also changed to a special "octopus" shape, which does not cover the capacitor.

As a result, the package size of the entire processor is almost identical to that of AM4 (exact data is not available), ensuring that the heatsink continues to be compatible.
