Kanji Fun Talk: 戌
"戌" (xu1), which is a hieroglyph. The oracle bone "戌" character originates from an ancient large axe, which has a solitary blade, a wide and thick axe body, and a short axe handle. Late oracle axes are written in triangles, with top hooks, forks, and some axes that resemble a horizontal boot.
"戌" is a weapon used by a small number of infantry generals in ancient times, and it is also a weapon used by slave owners to slaughter slaves, and it is more often a tool used by ancestors in labor production.
The glyph evolution of the "戌" character in Jinwen is basically the same as that of the glyphs of "Rong", "E", "戍" and so on, with the wooden handle bent and the blade lined. The small seal inherits the glyph of the Jin script in the middle of the Zhou Dynasty, and the script is written as "戌".
The original meaning of the word "戌" is bronze axe. This meaning has been rarely used.
The text is explained: "Shu, extinguish also." In September, the yang is slight, everything is complete, and the sun goes down into the earth. The vernacular text "Shuowen Jiezi" explains the text like this: "Shu, eliminate." Representing September, when the yang is weak, everything has matured, and the yang enters the earth downwards. It can be seen from here that the main reason why "戌" represents the ninth month of the lunar calendar should be two, one, all things are complete. In the ninth month of the lunar calendar, the farming is ripe and needs to use "戌" to harvest; Second, the sun goes down into the ground also. In the ninth month of the lunar calendar, the weather gradually becomes colder, and the ancestors need to cut firewood for fuel for winter use, which must also use "戌". Since ancient times, ancestors have had the habit of cutting firewood for the winter, and many firewood are used for charcoal. It can be seen from this that "戌" is a means of labor production in peacetime and is used as a weapon in wartime.
"戌" is used as an ordinal word, which is borrowed as the eleventh place of the earth branch and is also one of the twelve hours of the day. The "time of death" corresponds to the current 7:00-9:00 pm.
