In the early days of Fei Yi's service to the Shu Han Dynasty, he was valued and trusted by Zhuge Liang, and he sent several envoys to Eastern Wu as an emissary, and was praised by Sun Quan and his courtiers in the State of Wu. During Zhuge Liang's Northern Expedition, he deliberately took Fei Yi with him for training, and successively served as a soldier, a middle protector, and a Sima and other positions. At that time, the contradiction between Wei Yan and Yang Yi was becoming increasingly acute, and Zhuge Liang could not bear to punish the two, so he sent Fei Yi to deal with them.
