In 1382 (the fifteenth year of Hongwu), Empress Ma died of illness. Yao Guangxiao entered the palace to recite prayers and blessings, and was responsible for accompanying the kings, and the first encounter with Zhu Di, the King of Yan, was also in this year. It is said that as soon as Yao Guangxiao saw Zhu Di, he tried his best to persuade him to rebel, and in order to prove his sincerity, Yao Guangxiao also proposed to Zhu Yuanzhang that he hoped to accompany Zhu Di to Beiping.
After Yao Guangxiao arrived in Beiping, he was openly appointed abbot of Qingshou Temple, and in fact he had become Zhu Di's confidant and military master, and he not only formulated a major strategic direction for Zhu Di, but also trained soldiers for Zhu Di in the palace and supervised the craftsmen to build weapons, all of which was carried out secretly under his control.
In 1399, the King of Yan launched the famous Battle of Jingnan in the name of "Qing Junfang". In fact, the number of soldiers and horses of Zhu Di was very different from that of the imperial court, and Zhu Di's final victory was inseparable from Yao Guangxiao's many key instructions in addition to his genius military talent.
It is not an exaggeration to say that Yao Guangxiao was the first meritorious service in the Battle of Jingnan, but after Zhu Di ascended the throne, Yao Guangxiao not only did not take credit for himself, but also refused to accept it, and he refused to accept it no matter whether Zhu Di rewarded him with high-ranking officials, property, houses, and maids, but lived in the temple, no different from ordinary monks.

At the moment when Zhu Di occupied Nanjing, Yao Guangxiao's wish had been fulfilled. Some people may say that Yao Guangxiao's eagerness to retreat is because he is afraid that Zhu Di will suspect him, but this is not the case. Zhu Di repeatedly advised Yao Guangxiao to return to the customs as an official, but Yao Guangxiao refused to agree, and if Zhu Di was jealous of Yao Guangxiao, he would never persuade him to return to the customs.
