As the capital of China, Beijing undertakes important tasks such as a political center, a cultural center, an international exchange center, and a science and technology innovation center. Due to the special urban attributes, the cars on the streets of Beijing also show the uniqueness of the capital. Coupled with the new energy indicators born in 2014, they can only be used to purchase pure electric vehicles, which further affects consumers' car purchase orientation. Let's take a look at what cars the people of the capital love to buy!

First of all, let's take a look at the car ownership situation in Beijing, because Beijing has a large number of government agencies and state-owned enterprises, so the demand for vehicles is also relatively unique. According to the data as of the end of 2020, the highest total number of existing models in Beijing is the Audi A6L, with more than 130,000 units; followed by volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Magotan, which also have more than 120,000 vehicles. In fact, the high ownership of these cars is largely due to the preference for official cars, buses, and online ride-hailing cars.
In particular, the Audi A6L and Volkswagen Passat have been used as official cars in Beijing in the early years, so they have a very high status in the hearts of the post-60s and post-70s people, and are symbols of power and status. This has led to many post-80s and post-90s in Beijing today also being influenced by their parents, and they are also more sought after by the two German brands of Audi and Volkswagen.
And even Beijingers who do not have a small budget for car purchases are more willing to choose Volkswagen brand models such as Sagitar, Jetta, and even Langyi, which eventually led to Volkswagen almost occupying the list of car ownership in Beijing... And as a local who was born and raised in Beijing, I really have to admit that Beijing is full of volkswagen and Audi...
Among the top 10 models in terms of ownership, the Buick GL8 has become the only non-German car on the list with its dominance in the MPV field. In fact, it is also very easy to understand that as the capital of Beijing, there must be no shortage of various business travel purposes, then at this time, an MPV that cannot be faulted by space, texture and brand will naturally be favored by everyone.
Overall, in the top 10 of the list, 9 models are German brands, and the proportion of Models of the Volkswagen Group has reached 8. I have to say that the people of the capital really love the masses!
In terms of manufacturer attributes, as an international metropolis, beijing models are still dominated by joint venture models. As of 2020, the proportion of joint venture models has reached 68.42%; followed by independent brand models, accounting for 18.58%; and the ownership of pure imported models accounts for 12.76%, considering that the general price of imported cars is relatively expensive, so the amount of ownership is also very reasonable; finally, it is a wholly-owned enterprise model, accounting for 0.24%, considering that only Tesla is a wholly foreign-owned car company in the current passenger car market, so this figure actually refers to domestic Tesla.
In terms of brand nationality, German cars are undoubtedly the boss of the share, accounting for 35.27%, which once again confirms the beijing people's love for German cars together with the data of 9 German cars in the top 10 models mentioned earlier. After the German car, the second place is the Japanese car, accounting for 20.98% of the ownership. And independent brands also show no weakness, with 19.44% of the ownership ratio of the third position. According to the current form, the sales of independent brand new energy vehicles are getting higher and higher, and Japanese new energy vehicles are still in the "rotten" stage, perhaps in a few years, the number of independent brands in Beijing will exceed the Japanese.
In the back camp, the fourth place of the American car accounted for 11.95%, and the gap with the top three has been very large; Korean cars with the advantages of Beijing modern localization, as well as the early years of the Elantra taxi excellent reputation, there is still a trace of afterglow in Beijing, and now the new Elantra on the road in Beijing is still relatively high. Nevertheless, the 6.91% ownership ratio is already very low, and I believe that this number will definitely become lower and lower in the future. As for the French system and other European brands, the ownership has not exceeded 3%, and in contrast to volkswagens, it is a proper "niche car".
In terms of energy forms, if you look at the total amount, gasoline vehicles are still the absolute main force, and the proportion of ownership has reached 92.23%. However, it should be noted that in recent years, Beijing's lottery policy has changed, taking 2021 as an example, a total of 100,000 new indicators have been issued in Beijing throughout the year, of which the new energy indicators are as high as 60,000, and the number of people queuing for new energy indicators is now more than 430,000 people, and those who have just participated in the new energy indicator queue need to wait for 8 years to get the bid. That is to say, in the next few years, Beijing will add hundreds of thousands of pure electric vehicles. Because of this, the ownership of pure electric vehicles has continued to rise in recent years, accounting for 6.21% by 2020, far higher than the number of electric vehicles accounting for less than 2% of the total in the country. As for plug-in hybrid models, the ownership in Beijing accounts for only 1.24%, far lower than Shanghai's 4.76%, which is because Beijing's license plate policy stipulates that only pure electric models can use new energy indicators, if it is plug-in hybrid, or ordinary hybrid models, it is the same treatment as traditional fuel vehicles. Because of this, before Beijing's new energy policy standards are changed, plug-in hybrid vehicles are difficult to become mainstream in Beijing.
Interestingly, if you look at the age of existing vehicles in Beijing, the two years of use of 5 years and 11 years of use are significantly higher than the age of other cars, why is this?
Combined with the development and policy analysis of the Beijing automobile market, we speculate that this is mainly because 11 years ago (the end of 2010) was just the eve of Beijing's implementation of the lottery policy, when many people rushed to buy a car before the lottery, and in a short period of time, there was a surge in sales, which led to a significant increase in ownership in the same year. And the family car is 6 years exempt from inspection, many families will also choose to change the car at this time point of 6 years, so Beijing ushered in a number of second-hand car replacement boom in 2016, counting to today is just 5 years of time. This is also the reason why the proportion of 5-year and 11-year car age in Beijing is significantly higher.
To put it simply, as of 2020, the number of cars in Beijing is still dominated by German cars led by the Volkswagen Group, followed by Japanese and independent brands. Fuel vehicles and joint venture vehicles are still the absolute majority, with the implementation of the policy, pure electric vehicles are also gradually increasing their share. However, because the ownership reflects the total data at a certain point in time, which has been accumulated over decades, it does not fully reflect the current car buying preferences of Beijing consumers. So next, we will take the sales data for October 2021 as a reference to see what trends are in the sales of models in Beijing today.
As can be seen from the above figure, in October 2021, the highest-selling model in Beijing was actually BAIC BJEV EU5, with 1692 units sold in Beijing in a single month. And the top 4 sales are pure electric vehicles, which actually reflects the "effect" of Beijing's lottery policy to a certain extent. You know, in 2021, Beijing will issue a total of 100,000 new car indicators, of which only 40,000 are fuel vehicles and 60,000 are pure electric vehicles, so it is not surprising to see such a sales ranking.
As for why BAIC EU5 can become the sales champion, it can be roughly classified as the following reasons. First of all, beijing's local taxi companies have been updating models in recent years, and the original fuel-powered BAIC Senova D50, as well as the old Hyundai Elantra, Yuedong and other models have reached the 8-year retirement period, and will be updated to the pure electric BAIC EU5.
In addition, BAIC BJEV has also launched a taxi-specific replacement version of EU5 for the rapid refueling needs of taxi drivers, although its 350km NEDC endurance is slightly crotch-pulling, but because it supports the fastest 30 seconds to change electricity, it is very suitable for taxis. And under the vigorous promotion of the Beijing Municipal Government, Beijing will build at least 240 taxi rapid replacement power stations by the end of this year, and the penetration rate is even far beyond the Weilai replacement power station! With the support of the government and the strong push of policies, it is not surprising that baic motor EU5 sales are at the top.
In addition to the official taxis in Beijing, a number of ride-hailing companies have also cooperated with BAIC to purchase EU5 series pure electric vehicles for use as ride-hailing vehicles, which has also boosted the sales performance of EU5 in Beijing to a certain extent.
Compared with BAIC EU5, BYD Song PLUS EV and Qin PLUS EV ranked 2nd and 3rd are obviously more in line with the car purchase preferences of ordinary consumers. In the past year, the number of these two cars on the Beijing road has grown visibly. After all, in the field of pure electric vehicles, BYD is undoubtedly the most powerful brand within 200,000, and this price range coincides with the main car purchase price of 100,000-200,000 Chinese consumers.
Ranked 4th is the Tesla Model Y, which has gradually replaced the Model 3 in the hearts of consumers since the domestic production of this medium-sized SUV. Especially for a city like Beijing, which is strictly limited to licenses, the Model Y has more space, a larger trunk, better passability, and it is reasonable to be more popular than the Model 3.
As for the Buick GL8, which ranks fifth and sells 704 units a month, it is a just-needed model in the business market, and the Buick GL8 will be invincible for a long time before other strong competitors appear. After all, in airports, hotels and high-end business venues, the Buick GL8 is a model that can be perfectly integrated into the surrounding environment. Just like the black Audi A6L and black Passat of the year, it is a choice that will never be wrong.
Volkswagen Langyi, which ranks 6th in terms of sales, is the cheapest fuel vehicle in the top 10 sales in Beijing in October. As we mentioned earlier, the Beijing area has obviously more love for German cars, so the Volkswagen sedan with good space and relatively cheap price will naturally get good sales.
It's a bit of a surprise that Nissan Tianlai was able to rank 7th in Sales in Beijing in October, and we speculate that this is mainly due to two reasons. First, the shortage of chip supply in recent months has been more serious, the Volkswagen Department's Maiteng and Passat have seriously reduced production, and toyota Camry and Honda Accord have also been affected to a certain extent. In the joint venture B-class car, only Nissan "benefited" from the slow sales of the three-cylinder X-Trail, in order to have a sufficient amount of chips to supply Tianlai, ultimately ensuring stable production and discounts.
The second reason for Tianlai's hot sales is because of the developed online ride-hailing business in Beijing. Because many people prefer to take a higher-level "special car" when traveling, the online ride-hailing platform represented by Didi Chauffeur and Beijing local enterprise Shouqi Ride-hailing has invariably chosen Nissan Tianlai as the main chauffeur-driven model. After all, Tianlai has high brand awareness, comfortable riding experience, and at the same time has a high cost performance and a low failure rate, which will naturally be favored by chauffeurs. At this time, combined with the advantages of sufficient chips, it can explain the reason for the recent strong sales of Tianlai.
As for the remaining 8th, 9th and 10th three models in the sales list, they are all luxury brand models from Germany, namely Mercedes-Benz GRC, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The hot sales of these three cars in the Beijing area also reflect the rich living standards of the Beijing people. What's more, for most Beijing families, a family may only have one car, which will also lead to many people willing to spend more money to buy a better car to enhance the family experience.
After some analysis, it is not difficult to find that as the capital of China and the political and cultural center, the automobile consumption habits in Beijing are indeed relatively unique, such as the Audi A6L, which is a model that the general family cannot afford to consume, but it has become the highest number of models in the city, which is believed to be unexpected by many people. From this point of view, due to different environments, policies and cultural differences in each region, it will form completely different car buying preferences, I don't know what brand and model ownership is the largest in the city where the students are located?
