Lei Jun: Xiaomi has more than 16,000 engineers and invested 100 billion yuan in research and development in 5 years

On December 28, at the Xiaomi 12 press conference, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun announced that he would update the R&D investment plan and increase the R&D investment from the original 50 billion yuan to 100 billion yuan in the next 5 years. "In the past two years, Xiaomi's R&D investment has exceeded 22 billion yuan, and the number of engineers has exceeded 16,000." Lei Jun said.

Among domestic mobile phone manufacturers, Huawei has the heaviest R& D investment, and in 2020 alone, Huawei's R&D investment reached 141.8 billion yuan, surpassing Apple in scale.

In contrast, the investment scale of other domestic head manufacturers is generally small. In the underlying self-research technology is in the early stages. Xiaomi's research and development expenditure in 2020 is only about 10 billion yuan, and Vivo is also in the scale of tens of billions of yuan. OPPO announced in 2019 that it would invest 50 billion yuan in research and development in 3 years.

The mobile phone industry has entered the stock cycle, and competition has come to the deep water area. The core of competitiveness around the high-end mobile phone market is believed to come from the underlying research and development investment. (Text/Ma Ce Editor/You Yong)
