Guo Jia is concentrating on giving lessons to her classmates.
Rednet Moment reporter Zhang Xingcheng reported from Changsha
"Isn't it just a nurse who gives injections and dispenses medicine?"
"Can nursing work still produce doctors and academicians?"
People who know more about nursing work may be able to easily refute the first question, but if it comes to nursing also needs "scientific research" and can also get out of academicians, many people may be "confused".
But the answer to the second question is indeed "yes."
In the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University, there is such a young female teacher who is deeply loved by students, not only received a doctorate in nursing jointly trained by Central South University and Yale University at the age of 27, but also promoted to professor and doctoral supervisor at the age of 37, and was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Nursing Sciences at the age of 38 - she is Guo Jia.
Over the years, with her dedication and love for the cause of nursing, she has devoted herself to nursing teaching and scientific research, and dedicated her youth and enthusiasm to the cultivation of nursing talents and the development of nursing science.
Guo Jia patiently tutored the students.
Deep cultivation of care bears fruit
As an outstanding talent in the field of nursing in China, Guo Jia's understanding of nursing work has also had a gradual and in-depth process.
Before going to college, nursing work was no different from the impression of "injection and medicine" in the eyes of ordinary people. However, with the deepening of understanding, especially after graduate school and doctoral studies, she gradually and deeply realized that the role of nursing work is not limited to health promotion such as injections and medicines, alleviating and curing diseases, but also plays a huge role in the prevention and rehabilitation of human diseases and improving people's quality of life.
Great causes are inseparable from the guidance of advanced theories and scientific methods, and in order to achieve breakthroughs in theory or research and change the current situation that plagues people, someone must devote themselves to scientific research and strive to explore in nursing scientific research.
What Guo Jia aspired to do was the explorer.
In order to be targeted, she focused her scientific research on the prevention and management of diabetes. What prompted her to make this decision came from a lecture given by Professor Margaret Grey, dean of Yale's School of Nursing, she listened to during her second year of her master's degree.
Professor Grey is known worldwide for her research to help children with type 1 diabetes improve their level of disease adaptation, and her lectures made Guo Jia deeply aware that 90% of the health education and prognosis of people with type 1 diabetes rely on care. However, at that time, this special group of people had not yet been paid attention to by domestic clinical and scientific researchers, and the efficacy of children after illness was often not ideal. This made Guo Jia very touched.
In the summer of 2008, with the financial support of the Scholarship Council and the Yale-China Association of the United States, Guo Jia went to Yale University in the United States as a joint doctoral student to study with Professor Grey's research team for one year. This year, she underwent the core curriculum of the PhD student in nursing and worked in Professor Grey's national research project team to truly begin research on type 1 diabetes management.
The international high-level scientific research enlightenment gave her great enthusiasm for scientific research, laid a solid scientific research foundation, and imperceptibly, her recognition of the nursing discipline began to penetrate deep into the bone marrow.
During her Ph.D., she found that due to its age, the classic theoretical model of adaptation to chronic diseases in childhood could no longer solve new problems in current treatment, nor could she answer questions such as how factors interacted with each other and how well patients adapted. Based on this, together with her mentor, she took the lead in constructing and validating the theoretical model of disease adaptation in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, and verified its effectiveness, which solved the problem of the lack of relevant theoretical models in the management of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes in China.
Guo Jia's achievements provide a theoretical basis for the future management of type 1 diabetes in China, and play a key role in improving the disease adaptation status, improving their quality of life and metabolic control level.
In 2015, Guo Jia developed and validated the Coping Skills Training (CST) project for domestic adolescents with type 1 diabetes, which was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, which is the earliest project in the field of nursing to receive funding from this fund. She is passionately engaged in learning and research, and constantly thinks about how to enable more patients to benefit from prevention and nursing research.
In 2011 and 2014, Guo Jia entered Central South University and the University of California, San Francisco to carry out postdoctoral research work, and her postdoctoral study experience exposed her to the field of women's chronic disease prevention. In 2016, Guo Jia was funded by the Chinese Medical Association of the United States to implement lifestyle intensive training for rural women with a history of gestational diabetes, developed a set of training programs and supporting standardized videos, the project has successfully promoted the implementation of high-quality nursing services and health promotion services for disadvantaged women and children in Hunan Province in recent years, and is expected to become a breakthrough in the practice of accurate prevention of chronic diseases in Hunan Province, which has had a certain impact in the field of nursing disciplines at home and abroad.
Accept birthday wishes from students.
He is also a teacher and a friend who is immersed in teaching
"The teacher has a very cheerful personality, she is also a teacher and a friend, there is no generation gap with her, we respect and like her very much, she is our role model to learn."
Promoted to associate professor in 2015 and selected as a master tutor, in 2020 promoted to professor and selected as a doctoral supervisor, since 2011 when he stayed in the Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University to teach, while indulging in the frequent scientific research results, Guo Jia has always been a teacher who is deeply respected and loved by students.
She carefully evaluates the current situation of education, develops teaching methods, bases herself on nursing education, edits or participates in the compilation of two textbooks, and participates in the development of one national and two provincial first-class high-quality online open undergraduate courses.
She constantly innovates the teaching model, with a "problem-based" teaching mode to guide students to divergent thinking, positive thinking, and won the praise of students.
She promotes the organic integration of "ideological and political education" and professional education, organically integrates the elements of ideological and political teaching into professional courses, and continuously enhances students' patriotic feelings and enhances students' confidence and determination to choose to study medicine by telling the patriotic deeds of medical pioneers and the touching deeds during the fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic.
As a graduate supervisor, she attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' scientific research ability. "Always admonish us to read more articles, think more, ask more why, and think about solutions when we encounter problems." Teacher Guo also often uses his rest time to make strict annotations to our papers, and sometimes even spends hours patiently explaining to students. Speaking of Guo Jia, her students all said so.
Together with her team, she has developed cutting-edge evidence-based basic courses for master's and doctoral nursing students, such as Evidence-Based Nursing, Evidence-Based Nursing Theory and Practice, and Utilization of Research in Evidence Based Practice, which enhance students' ability to use evidence-based evidence to solve clinical problems and promote the development of nursing disciplines.
From 2017 to 2021, she trained a total of 18 nursing master's students and 2 doctoral students, of which 3 graduate students won national scholarships, 2 graduate students won the president's scholarship of Central South University, 7 students won provincial and university-level projects, and 4 students pursued doctoral degrees for further study.
Because of her outstanding teaching work, she won the "Hunan Provincial Ordinary College Teaching Expert", "Central South University 2018-2019 Academic Year Excellent Class Tutor", "American Chinese Medical Foundation CMB Teacher Development Award", the second prize of the First National College Teacher Teaching Innovation Competition affiliated to the College Zhenggao Group (ranked third), the Hunan Provincial Ordinary College Teachers Teaching Innovation Competition and the first prize of the First National College Teachers Teaching Innovation Competition, etc., achieving both scientific research and teaching excellence.
Fight alongside your colleagues.
Serve the community with fraternity
While doing a good job in scientific research, teaching and talent training, Guo Jia also actively assumes social responsibility and contributes to social services with a heart of fraternity.
From June to December 2018, Guo Jia went to the JBI Evidence-Based Health Care Center of the University of Adelaide in Australia to learn evidence-based nursing practice methods, and since then, she has devoted herself to using evidence-based medicine methods to solve clinical practice problems, and has participated in and guided more than 10 medical institutions to complete more than 50 evidence transformations, and trained nearly 4,000 medical staff.
She led the team to focus on health promotion and disease prevention for disadvantaged people in rural areas, and volunteered at the "Xiangya Recreation Camp" for 14 consecutive years to provide the best research evidence practice for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes, improve the disease adaptability of this group, and reduce their disease burden.
At the event site, she found that most patients have sleep problems, so she led the research team to open up the sleep health plan for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. At present, the program has been implemented in several pilot hospitals in Hunan and Henan provinces, and patients and their parents have responded well.
Not only that, she has also developed a lifestyle intensive training program that meets the living habits and customs of women at high risk of diabetes in rural areas, and has produced standardized videos and simple operation manuals for the lack of health management and disease prevention capabilities of nurses in grass-roots hospitals. At present, the operation plan has been implemented in zhuzhou you county, Zhangjiajie Yongding district, Changsha city and many community health service centers, effectively improving the quality of life of the target population.
During the epidemic period, in view of the lack of teaching materials related to the prevention and control of the epidemic among medical students, especially nursing students, she also took the lead in developing the "Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia and Its Nursing" MOOC course to provide medical students with professional and rigorous knowledge related to the new coronavirus pneumonia, which was recommended by the MOOC "Love Course" network of Chinese universities. For this reason, she also won the title of "Young Commando for Epidemic Prevention and Control" in the May Fourth Appraisal of Central South University.
Over the years, Guo Jia has always been active in the front line of scientific research, active in the field of chronic disease prevention and management mainly based on diabetes, and has presided over more than 20 key scientific research projects with project funds of more than 3 million yuan, including many National Natural Science Foundation projects and a number of public bidding scientific research projects of the Chinese Medical Association in the United States.
In addition, she has published 75 papers as first author or corresponding author, of which 54 papers have been published as first author or corresponding author, including 42 papers including SCI.
Due to her outstanding scientific research performance, in 2019, Guo Jia was selected into the "Huxiang Youth Science and Technology Talents" program of the Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Department, won the Lu Huilin Scientific Research Award from Central South University in 2020, and was elected as an academician of the American Academy of Nursing Sciences in July 2021.
Guo Jia took a group photo with the graduation of the 2018 master's degree students he brought.
Face honor with gratitude
The Xiangya School of Nursing of Central South University is known as the cradle of the "Angel in White", and its nursing profession originated in 1911 at the Yale-in-China Nursing School, one of the earliest nursing schools in China to open nursing education, and an important part of the prestigious "Nanxiangya, North Xiehe".
As a member of Xiangya School of Nursing, Guo Jia recalled her own growth experience, full of emotion and gratitude: "I feel very fortunate, in the stage of scientific research enlightenment, I studied under Professor He Guoping, and the wise mentor taught me that while learning to do learning, I should learn to be a person, do things, and learn from the role models around me, which still deeply affects me." In the work, the meticulous care and support of the leaders such as Secretary Li Tao of the School of Nursing, Dean Tang Siyuan and other leaders nourished my growth, and colleagues gave me great help and encouragement in life and work..." Recalling this unforgettable and inspiring experience, Guo Jia said: "All the achievements I have made are based on the double-first-class construction platform of Xiangya School of Nursing, which has a good strength and reputation, and I must use redoubled my efforts to devote myself to teaching and scientific research work and strive for new breakthroughs in ordinary posts.
