Tesla was allowed to launch three more models in India for a total of seven

Tesla received approval from India's automotive testing and certification body for the launch of three more models, clearing the way for them to go public in India. It is reported that Tesla's Indian subsidiary has obtained the certification certificate of three other models, so that a total of seven models have been recognized.

Declaration is an important process of proving that a particular model meets all the specified criteria and is suitable for use on the road. However, it is unclear which models or variants have passed the filing process. Several of Tesla's test cars are regularly found on roads in India, including the Model 3 and Model Y.

While Tesla registered its Indian subsidiary in January 2021, it did not make any public statements regarding the commercial launch of an all-electric vehicle in India. The U.S.-based electric car giant has an Indian office in Bangalore. The company has reportedly been working hard to lobby India's central government to lower import tariffs.

The Indian government has been pushing for homegrown manufacturing of electric vehicles to make them a global electric vehicle production hub, competing with China, the current car-producing powerhouse. More than 70% of the world's electric vehicles are produced in China.

In India, if cost insurance and freight costs are worth more than $40,000, the import tax on electric vehicles is 100%. If the cost insurance and freight costs are worth less than $40,000, the import tax is 60%. Tesla's Model Y and Model 3 are priced between $38,700 and $41,200.

The two models account for 90 percent of Tesla's 2020 sales, with the remaining 10 percent coming from the Model S and Model X, priced between $81,200 and $91,200.

Tesla has been beefing up its human resources in India since the beginning of the year and has appointed several experienced executives. Prashanth Menon has been with Tesla for more than four years and is now in charge of Tesla's operations in India.
