Time is like an arrow, the sun and the moon are like shuttles, since graduating from the History Department of Beijing Normal University in 1997, more than 20 years have passed inadvertently. The past is not like smoke, the impression left by my alma mater is unforgettable, profound, influential, and the "sound and smile" of my alma mater has never left, whether it is unintentional or deliberate; whether it is silent or sound. On October 12, 2021, when I returned to the office at 4:40 p.m., teacher Lu Min told me: "There is an alumnus of your Beijing Normal University who called you and called you many times. I asked incredulously, "Who is it?" Teacher Lu said: "I don't know, the phone called the school office, and then called our office, anyway, in the afternoon I have been calling to find you." “

Just when I was wondering, after a while, the office phone rang again, I quickly picked up the phone, and the other side of the phone asked: "Are you Teacher Liu Xiangrong of Ninghai Middle School?" Hearing the unfamiliar voice, I said, "Yes, which one are you?" "Do you remember Teacher Zhang Shouchang of Beijing Normal University?" I am his son Zhang Yankuai, Swallow Yan, Happy Fast. The other side of the phone responded. Hearing the three words "Zhang Shouchang", I immediately said excitedly: "Hello! Hello! I remember, when I was in college, Mr. Zhang taught us the course "Modern Chinese Historical Materials". "In this way, I learned that I had made an afternoon phone call (I had three history classes that afternoon, maybe I just missed it) and that the person who looked for me turned out to be Mr. Zhang Yankuai, the son of my university teacher Zhang Shouchang (later learned in the phone chat that Mr. Zhang was also an alumnus of the history department of Beijing Normal University).

After knowing that the caller was Mr. Zhang Yankuai, the son of my university teacher Zhang Shouchang, my thoughts suddenly returned to the university era, and I told Mr. Zhang Yankuai about the general scene when Mr. Zhang Shouchang taught the course "Modern Chinese Historical Materials" and the "sound and smile" that Mr. Zhang has left me so far, and Mr. Zhang Yankuai also briefly talked about his father's experience, the situation of taking classes in the history department of Beijing Normal University, and the commemoration activities of the historians and family after his father's death.

In the course of the chat, I regret to say that Mr. Zhang was very knowledgeable, and when he lectured, he was quoted and laughed, and because there was no audio and video recording equipment at that time, otherwise I would have recorded the audio and video of Mr. Zhang's course at that time. After listening, Mr. Zhang Yankui said that when his father was in class before his death, he specially went to Beijing Normal University to record a video, but it was a little blurry (there was no mobile phone in the early days, and the camera was not common, which was also very precious). Mr. Zhang also said that after the death of his father, the Society of Modern Chinese History sent someone to suggest that all kinds of academic materials of Teacher Zhang should be well preserved. I said that the best place to preserve scholars' materials is in the school library or the work unit reference room.

During the chat, Mr. Zhang Yankui said that as a child (during the chat, it was learned that Zhang Shouchang's children and daughters were both complete, Zhang Yankui and Zhang Yanchai were his sons), after the death of his father, he also actively sorted out various academic materials (including unpublished materials) and life deeds left by his father, and assisted Gaotang County, Shandong (Zhang Shouchang is a shandong Gaotang native) to edit the Gao Tang literature and history materials "Zhang Shouchang" album is one of the works (there are commemorative activities in academia on the 100th anniversary of Teacher Zhang's birth next year).

Mr. Zhang Yankui said that the "Zhang Shouchang" album edited by Gao Tang in Shandong Province contains a commemorative article I wrote on the Internet {After the death of Teacher Zhang Shouchang, I had a blog on the "New Thinking Network" sponsored by the Curriculum Center of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China [a website that was more famous at the time of the new curriculum reform of history, and the author registered a commemorative essay on the "New Thinking Network" called "History Teaching Exchange Network (Liu Xiangrong's blog)", entitled "It is not easy for you to fail the exam - Mourning Teacher Zhang Shouchang"}. After the book was compiled, he mailed a copy to the author of the book, called many times, and only today did he contact me (after graduation, due to various reasons, the office telephone number was constantly changing, Mr. Zhang Yankui first called the Nanjing Ninghai Middle School Office, the phone was transferred to the Ninghai Branch School Office, and finally transferred to the current office, and then contacted the author (it can be seen that not only Teacher Zhang Shouchang is meticulous in learning for people, but also good family style is passed down, and Mr. Zhang Yankui, the son of Teacher Zhang).

In this way, after we talked for a long time, Mr. Zhang Yankuai and I added WeChat to each other, and I left Mr. Zhang Yankuai with a contact address, zip code and telephone number through WeChat, and he said that he would mail me a book soon. In this way, after the self-study exam proctoring on the morning of October 23, 2021, I got a book of "Zhang Shouchang" mailed by Mr. Zhang Yankui in the school concierge. After getting the beautifully printed book, I saw that the book was edited by the Gaotang County Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and published by Shandong Qilu Audio and Video Publishing Co., Ltd. last year, a thick book, a total of 380,000 words, more than 450 pages, and its content is divided into five parts, and the author's "It is not easy for you to fail the exam - Mourning Teacher Zhang Shouchang" Was compiled in the fourth part of the book, specifically pages 256 to 257 in the book.

Teacher Zhang Shouchang is a good teacher during the period when I was studying in the History Department of Beijing Normal University, after his death, as a student of Teacher Zhang, the commemorative article published on the "New Thinking Network" blog [blog named "History Teaching Exchange Network (Liu Xiangrong's blog)") sponsored by the Curriculum Center of the Ministry of Education of China is a follow-up at that time, and I do not want this small essay to be included in the book "Zhang Shouchang", not only that, Mr. Zhang Yankuai also went to great lengths to inquire about contacting the author, and sent the "Zhang Shouchang" album to the author. Here, I would like to sincerely and especially thank Mr. Zhang Yankuai and sincerely thank Mr. Zhang Yankuai for his gift of books!

On the evening of October 23, 2021, he was at his home in Nanjing

Appendix 1: Introduction to Baidu Character "Zhang Shouchang":

Mr. Zhang Shouchang entered Beijing in 1940 to study, and successively studied at Beijing Shandong Middle School and Peking University, and transferred from the English Department to the History Department in the second year of peking university. Mr. Zhang worked part-time as a teacher while studying and has been engaged in education since graduation. In 1953, he was transferred to the History Department of Beijing Normal University, and in 1957 he was mistakenly classified as a "rightist". In his teaching position at Beijing Normal University for more than 60 years, Mr. Zhang has successively engaged in the teaching and research of history teaching methods, modern Chinese history and modern Chinese historical materials, and has made important contributions to the construction and development of the disciplines of modern history and history teaching methods of Beijing Normal University. Mr. Zhang is loyal, rigorous in his studies, profound in his studies, tireless in teaching, outstanding in achievements, and is one of the famous experts in modern history in China. His major works include "History of the Northern Expedition of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom", "Chinese Peasants and modern Revolution", "Chinese Modern Rumors", "Dawn Collection" and so on.

He is the compiler of the "Reference Materials for the General History of China and the Modern Part" and the main author of the Zhonghua Bookstore edition of "Modern Chinese History". Especially in the case that the Beiyang Warlord, a series of modern Chinese historical materials, had not yet been published, with his rich grasp and profound understanding of China's modern historical materials, he alone undertook the writing of the beiyang warlords' ruling stage, forming important achievements in the study of the beiyang warlords' rule. After the publication of the textbook, it was widely praised by historians and reprinted many times.

Mr. Zhang Shouchang, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a life honorary member of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, a famous educator and historian in China, and a professor at Beijing Normal University, died in Beijing at the age of 91 on April 6, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. due to ineffective medical treatment.

Liu Xiangrong: It is not easy for you to fail the exam - mourn the memory of Teacher Zhang Shouchang

Author: Liu Xiangrong (Nanjing Ninghai Middle School) Source: History Teaching Exchange Network (Liu Xiangrong's blog)

Recently, I saw an obituary on the website of the School of History of Beijing Normal University, saying that Mr. Zhang Shouchang, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, a life honorary member of the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, a famous historian in China, and a professor at Beijing Normal University, died in Beijing at the age of 91 at 8 o'clock on April 6, 2012 due to ineffective medical treatment.

Seeing this obituary, my mind immediately returned to my college days. Teacher Zhang is another good teacher who died in college after the death of Teacher Liu Zongxu. I remember that at that time, Teacher Zhang had retired, was over seventy years old, dressed in a Zhongshan suit, had white hair in his back comb, walked slowly, but his body was still very tough, and he climbed to the third floor every time to give us lessons.

Re-employed by the department, Professor Zhang taught us a professional course of "Modern Chinese Historical Materials". Mr. Zhang is not only an expert in the field of middle school history pedagogy, but also a famous expert in modern history in contemporary China. During the one-semester lectures, Mr. Zhang gave me the impression of not only a knowledgeable teacher, but also a kind and wise elder.

Teacher Zhang's lectures, slightly with a Shandong accent, no lecture script, his lectures are full of laughter, talking, quoting from the side, quoting scriptures, telling the story, full of logic, the story is particularly strong, very attractive. When it comes to the key points, I often wonder what documents I read in the library, what the main contents of these documents talk about, and what relationship these contents have with the issues discussed, during which the context of historical facts is very clear, and the use of various historical materials in modern China is handy, which surprised me at that time, if it is compared to the "living dictionary" of modern Chinese historical materials, it is not exaggerated at all.

Teacher Zhang is also a kind and humorous elder. At the end of the university major elective, the department is required to pass the written test to score the results, remember that at the end of the study, Teacher Zhang said, listen carefully on the line, as for the exam, "you want to fail the exam is not easy." Everyone in the exam will be a little nervous, and Teacher Zhang's words "It is not easy for you to fail the exam" not only made us laugh at that time, but also made us feel the concern of a kind elderly person over seventy years old for the humor of the students.

It has been nearly fifteen years since I left Beijing Normal University, but whenever I think of the elective course "Modern Chinese Historical Materials", the profound knowledge and kind voice and smile of Teacher Zhang when he lectures appear in front of his eyes, and Teacher Zhang's words "It is not easy if you want to pass the exam" echo in your ears.

April 6, 2012 at 8 o'clock is the day of Teacher Zhang's death in Beijing, I would like to express the deep condolences of a student in this small article.

Teacher Zhang went all the way!

Teacher Zhang is ancient!
