On April 16, Volvo's pure electric medium and large SUV - Volvo EX90 officially completed its debut in China, positioning the market as a flagship pure electric SUV, and based on the SPA2 platform, it will be produced in China in 2024 and then launched in the middle of the year. In addition, Volvo will also fully electrify in the future, and the EX90 Excellence will be used as a limited top-of-the-line version of the EX90, which will also be the first to be launched in the Chinese market.
The Volvo EX90 is Volvo's new all-electric flagship SUV, retaining the classic elements of Volvo, while adding innovative elements of the Concept Recharge concept car, and introducing the DUS driver perception system for the first time, as well as intelligent cockpit and the latest PilotAssist driver assistance functions.
The Volvo EX90 not only continues the latest family design, but also incorporates more innovative elements. Specifically, the shape of the vehicle is similar to the current XC90, and some of the design ideas of the Concept Recharge concept car are adopted in details.
The front face adopts a closed front grille exclusive to pure electric vehicles, and the headlight cluster is still a classic Quake shape, but the structure is more technologically beautiful, while the lower surround is also equipped with an active grille to help improve air resistance.
It is worth mentioning that there is also a lidar with a detection range of up to 250 meters directly above the front of the car. The side styling of the body is inspired by the yacht design, and the smooth integrated design makes the body look more atmospheric.
The body details also adopt hidden door handles, low wind resistance hubs and other designs, which also makes the wind resistance coefficient of the whole car 0.29Cd. The rear of the car is solid and layered, especially the vertical 6 LED light groups at both ends of the rear windshield greatly improve the recognition of the whole car.
Inside, the Volvo EX90 is also designed in an extremely clean style and is available in seven different colour and material combinations. Details include a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with touch-sensitive buttons, a full LCD instrument cluster floating above the air outlet, a through-type air conditioning outlet and a 14.5-inch vertical center control screen, and the interior also has rich interactive functions and supports OTA upgrades. In addition, the car is equipped with a special ultra-sensitive radar sensor, which can be used to monitor whether children or pets are left in the car.
In terms of seats, the cabin of the Volvo EX90 uses a sustainably supplied material made from recycled materials such as PET plastic bottles and pine resin, and a new material called "Nordico". Compared with the materials such as leather and wood used in traditional luxury cars, it is indeed environmentally friendly, emphasizing the concept of green environmental protection. In addition, the new car will be the first Volvo brand model to have headrest audio, which will remain Bowers & Wilkins.
In terms of intelligent driving, the Volvo EX90 is equipped with full-stack self-developed software + Luminar lidar + DUS driver perception system, which also includes sensor components including lidar, 8 cameras, 5 radars and 16 ultrasonic sensors, and comes standard with a newly developed driver understanding system. At the same time, it is also equipped with the DUS in-car dual-camera driver perception system, which consists of a capacitive steering wheel and two cameras, which can obtain driver status information and integrate with intelligent driving algorithms.
Among them, the DUS driver perception system captures the driver's status signal through two cameras and observes the driver's line of sight. Measuring the time the driver spends observing the road ahead, combined with environmental changes, can identify the driver's gaze off the road, and then determine whether the driver is distracted driving, thereby further improving the safety performance of the vehicle.
In terms of power, the Volvo EX90 is equipped with a drive motor with a maximum power of 370kW (503Ps) and a peak torque of 910Nm. It is also equipped with a 111kWh battery pack with a cruising range of 467 km and 600 km respectively. In addition, the Volvo EX90 will also feature a pocket block design for the first time.
In terms of charging, Volvo plans to initially provide a two-way charging function customer service package in specific markets and regions, which allows the Volvo EX90 to not only discharge power to electrical appliances, or share power with another Volvo electric vehicle; It also includes a wall-mounted charging case and home energy management system that connects electric vehicles, wall-mounted charging cases and home meters, as well as to the cloud and Volvo App.
Volvo World Tree Intelligent Safety System
At this conference, Volvo also released the World Tree intelligent safety system, which integrates the four safety spaces outside the car, inside the car, the body and the human. Volvo has accumulated nearly a hundred years of technology, formed a strong system, is the "root" of the world tree intelligent safety system, the original pure electric platform, centralized electronic and electrical architecture is the "branch" and "leaf" produced by Volvo, through the centralized electronic and electrical architecture, the use of advanced sensors and lidar, to achieve the coordination of in-car functions. The Volvo EX90 is the first model based on the Volvo World Tree Smart Safety System.
In terms of exterior safety, Volvo chose Luminar LiDAR, which has a detection range of 600 meters and provides early warning 7.5 seconds in advance. In terms of in-car safety, Volvo uses the DUS driver perception system and uses binocular cameras to achieve double safety, one in the center of the vehicle and one behind the steering wheel, which can monitor the driver's status more comprehensively and avoid driver fatigue. The vehicle uses a capacitive steering wheel, which can effectively monitor the safety status of driver assistance implementation.
In terms of body safety, Volvo's new generation cage body front adopts a lightweight aluminum alloy frame, which can achieve the effect of weight reduction and energy absorption, Volvo has created a hard boron steel battery, the structure increases strength, and ensures that the battery pack does not participate in energy absorption. At the same time, the battery control system BMS and smart fuse double fuse are used, and the smart fuse realizes 3 milliseconds of power down and isolates danger. In addition, in terms of people-oriented safety, Volvo's three plants will achieve 100% clean energy and become a global climate neutral benchmark enterprise by 2040.
