The flowers are purple or white; sepals up to 1.6 cm long, purple; broad inverted ovate petals, 1–1.5 cm long, basal claws up to 1.5 cm long; flowering period of 3 to 5 months. Zhuge cai is widely grown in Liaoning, Hebei, Shanxi and other places in the mainland, and its figure can be seen in plains, mountains and roadsides. (Cf. Flora of China)
