How do I introduce her?

An internationally authoritative historical linguist

A decipherer of the Celestial Book of the Western Regions

A disciple of Ji Xianlin who had the highest hopes

A beauty-loving lady who also wears a skirt in the winter

An old lady in Beijing who loves to soak in the gym

At the same time, he is also a patient

Professor Duan Qing is a Liberal Arts Chair Professor at Peking University, who has devoted her life to the teaching and research of medieval Iranian, Sanskrit, Pali, Gandhara and other related fields, and has made outstanding achievements in the fields of Indian studies, Buddhist teaching, Silk Road literature and Sanskrit Bayeux Sutra, and is well-known in the international academic community.

Many people are curious about how many languages Duan Qing knows. Her answer was: Don't ask me how many languages I know, ask me how many languages I know. Her student, Ye Shaoyong, an associate professor at Peking University's School of Foreign Chinese, counted for her: Indo-European, Sino-Tibetan, and Altaic... Let's put it this way, on the road from Europe to Asia, in addition to the particularly ones, there are several language departments she has dabbled in. ”

Studied under Mr. Ji Xianlin

Devote yourself to education

Originally from Shanxi, Professor Duan Qing studied Indian studies under Mr. Ji Xianlin and Mr. Jiang Zhongxin from 1978 to 1982 and obtained a master's degree. In 1978, Duan Qing was admitted to the graduate school of the German Department of Peking University, and Ji Xianlin was present during the interview. At that time, Ji Xianlin was looking for a student who studied German, so he picked her.

In 1980, after decades of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, Ji Xianlin returned to Germany for more than 30 years, bringing Duan Qing with him. He personally won her a scholarship and sent her to the University of Hamburg to study ancient Khotanese. Ji Xianlin was deliberately laid out, and successively sent several students abroad to receive "German-style" training.

In 1987, Professor Duan Qing returned to China after completing his studies and taught at Peking University, teaching Sanskrit, Pali, Gandharan, Middle Iranian and other languages and related literature courses, Duan Qing's teaching method is also German-style, she told the students: "All the way forward, don't look back, don't bother, you will understand it until you learn." The mystery of her language learning lies in this.

But Duan Qing is a little different from the German teacher, as long as the students behave well, she will praise in the most exaggerated language. In this way, she devoted herself to the cause of education with a sincere heart, a heart of dedication, and a heart of benevolence, and made important contributions to cultivating outstanding talents in the field of unpopular learning.

Fresh and welcoming

Academically, "expanding the territory"

"She is passionate and curious about all kinds of fields, and is a particularly vivid individual, jumping between different communities and constantly enriching herself." Speaking of Teacher Duan, everyone felt that it was difficult to summarize in one word, only "love" and "curiosity".

Love to dance, which is well known to colleagues and students around. At the opening scene of the student thesis, she wore a floral dress and a pearl necklace, and walked into the conference room in a circle. When she was young, she dreamed of becoming a dancer, but she still pays attention to dance dramas, and often forwards ballet performance news to students, like a child who shares her favorite sugar.

Deep condolences! She's gone......

During his inspection in Xinjiang, Duan Qing danced with his Uighur compatriots

It just so happens that what Duan Qing loves most is academics. She devotes herself to academic research with amazing vitality, learning languages, translating documents, interpreting classics, organizing research, and she is like a pioneering and fearless general, taking a step further in the lonely place, waving a hand, full of pride, and a person seems to be worthy of thousands of horses and thousands of troops. Difficult words and incomprehensible documents are reduced to vivid narratives in her pen, and Duan Qing strives to restore the splendid civilization scattered in the years.

Deep condolences! She's gone......

Embracing the fresh unknown, embracing the beautiful life, Duan Qing used the youth and enthusiasm that could not be extinguished by time to sow one spring after another everywhere he went.

Academic outbursts

Voice of Chinese scholars in the international arena

When Duan Qing first returned to China, there was no new material to study, and the discipline of history and language in the Western Regions was at a low ebb. In order to subsidize her family, she once accompanied a German travel agency, worked as a tour guide for German tourists, and opened her own company. This bitter time lasted for more than ten years.

It was not until after 2000 that the documents excavated from Xinjiang archaeology were successively put into research, and Duan Qing ushered in a period of academic explosion. "Like lava that has accumulated for many years, it erupts at once." Rong Xinjiang, professor of the Department of History at Peking University and president of the Turpan Society of Dunhuang, China, described it.

In December 2019, Duan Qing was preparing for a lecture

"If you want to give Teacher Duan an academic positioning, first of all, she learns India and Iran; secondly, what she does in both lines is the most core and the most difficult place, that is, interpretation." Rong Xinjiang, professor of the Department of History at Peking University and president of the Turpan Society in Dunhuang, China, told reporters, "This kind of learning has no utilitarian significance, but after the national strength is strong, all countries will raise such a person." Being able to read these shows that the people in this country are the smartest, and our country has raised a Duan Qing. After Duan Qing left, Rong Xinjiang sighed that the interpretation of the ancient language of the Silk Road, China is afraid that there will be no second person for many years.
