Power battery safety technology is the key to the healthy development of the new energy automobile industry. Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other five departments issued the "Guiding Opinions on Further Strengthening the Construction of the Safety System of New Energy Vehicle Enterprises", emphasizing the importance of the safety construction of new energy vehicles and clearly pointing out that it is necessary to improve the safety protection capabilities of power batteries in various states.

In order to allow participants to personally contact the top technology in the power battery industry, Tesla, one of the organizers of this challenge, will provide 2170 batteries that are widely used in the industry as the design materials for this event, helping participants to feel the importance of power battery safety in practice.

In the practical application of power batteries, in order to ensure safety, multiple tests such as battery parameter quantification, charge and discharge tests, rain tests, bottom ball strike tests, and fall tests are essential, and this time will also be reflected in the event and become a difficult problem that needs to be overcome by the contestants. In addition, car companies and battery companies have also continuously improved battery safety through technological innovation. Taking Tesla as an example, as one of the organizers of this event, Tesla has set a model for participants to learn from practical actions.

The Tesla 4680 battery, which will soon be put into production at the Texas Gigafactory, has the advantages of modularity, high compatibility, and high vehicle integration, bringing longer mileage to the vehicle, and effectively improving safety and leading the technology trend. Tesla optimized the 4680 cell high nickel cathode and silicon carbon anode material, improving the energy density of the battery cell, effectively improving the mileage, and alleviating range anxiety. Compared with the 2170 battery cell, the energy of each 4680 cell will be increased by 5 times, and the battery life will be increased by 16%. Tesla 4680 battery also uses the full polar ear winding scheme for the first time, reducing the impedance and heat generation of the battery cell and prolonging the life of the battery cell. In addition, compared with 2170 cells, the 4680 battery cell has increased its volume by 5 times and the cost has been reduced by 14%.

Regarding the performance and safety of the battery, in addition to the cell level, what is more important is the entire battery system level. Tesla's battery management technology combines higher performance while ensuring safety. For example, the HVC (high voltage controller) of Tesla vehicles meets both safety requirements and high performance goals through the combination of HVP (high voltage processor) and BMS (battery management system). Among them, the high-voltage processor is equivalent to the "sense of touch" of the battery system, responsible for inducing current, switching high-voltage switches, etc., for example, once there is an abnormality, it can immediately trigger the intelligent fuse (Pyro Fuse), which controls the danger to a minimum; and the battery management system is equivalent to the "brain", which is responsible for receiving all kinds of battery data from the battery, processing this information like a brain and giving the best solution, so as to diagnose battery health and behavior failures, perform thermal management, predict available energy and balance the battery cell, etc. Provides optimal performance based on comprehensive management and cell safety.

From a hardware point of view, Tesla at the battery system level, to achieve functional partitioning and achieve physical redundancy, where functional partitioning makes the software design more flexible and reliable; and physical redundancy is to leave room for system upgrades, can support more complex algorithms, to give full play to battery performance and efficiency. In software, Tesla's battery management system uses high-precision algorithms that enable batteries to perform better at the same capacity and remain stable, thereby achieving longer battery life under the premise of ensuring safety.
